The monopolisation of entertainment is a result of hyper-regulation from the top down; suiting those parties that have a vested interest in the restriction of its distribution and following centrification into large clubs and bars
a vibrant live music culture is the soul of our community. Music is a universal language and fosters tolerance and understanding between peoples. when will our governments recognise the importance of this and support their artists and musicians?
Performance opportunities are of exceptional importance in promoting cultural diversity and awareness in one of the most culturally diverse cities on earth.
why can pokies and large tv screens blaring video clips or football operate without restriction, yet live music is so regulated it is impossible to get a venue to play in, or to go and see a band?
Many people move in to inner city areas, expecting a quiet environment. If you buy/rent a house in a near bars and live music venues, you cannot force those existing establishments to change for you. Investigate the demographic and lifestyle of the area you choose to live in!
Make more oppurtunities for established and new musicians to perform and get known! Poker machines that have already overtaken many previous band rooms/venues do not promote a healthy cultural environment!!
because I believe that the LIVE music scene has never really recovered from the days when sythesisers, karaokes and backing tracks were invented. Venues thought they would save (make) money by cutting out musicians and perhaps they did so! But at the expense of their reputation for great LIVE music & entertainment. The mad part is, there is stil the audience for it but venues need to be able to sustain the time it will take to get the audiences back on the seats.
I support this petition because live music is important culturally and socially, as well as providing a wealth of employment opportunities for musicians, and also because good live music shared with others is good for the soul. The government definitely needs to make it cheaper and easier for venues to put on live music - unfortunately a tv screen or background music is significantly cheaper than the cost of Live Music licenses as well as the cost of running a PA & putting on live shows. Even in places which do provide live music, in the present "venue for hire" climate musicians are bearing all costs if they choose to put on a show, and are making very little money - much less than they stood to make 10 or 20 years ago in the same venues. Something needs to be done, for the publicans, for the musicians, and for the community.
