I recently moved to Melbourne where the live music scene is more vibrant due to appropriate licensing which supports the local music culture. This legislation offers a viable and demonstrated alternative which will encourage communities and cultures.
Even the most mercenary of governments should realise that talent is an asset - both financial and social. It is wise to invest in our live music talent.
Live music, especially that of an acoustic or intimate nature is becoming an endangered species and needs to have current limitations removed. I would certainly much prefer listening to live music than the offensive sound of pokies, and television. Besides live musicians need to earn a living!
It is hard enough to put together & keep together a live act. It is a healthy cultural expression & can provide a career under favourable conditions that makes life worthwhile for those little suited to other work. Talent needs to be encouraged & supported. I should know as a failed musician who couldn't, wasn't good enough make enough money! Perhaps with more experience & support someone in my situation might do better!
A labour government has a social obligation to support live music in all its forms as essential to culture as air and water. Any action otherwise is social vanadalism and damaging to civil society. Vote music!
a culture that has fun that is of no harm to others is a culture that will attract visitors and therefore money. come on sydney!(and therefore australia!)
The reason Sydney´s musial/cultural scene is so stunted...despite the best efforts of musicians and promoters. Please help Sydney become a truly international city, not just a venue for sporting events.
i support this petition because without fair access to venues live music remains an endangered art form. The current regulations are clearly stifling the music industry and need to be reformed. A vibrant live music scene creates enormous cultural and economic value wherever it occurs, whether in a small town or a global city like Sydney. At present it is difficult to explain to visitors why there is almost no live music in Sydney after midnight on any given night. This outrageous scenario has in a great part come about due to draconian Licencing Regulations which need to be fundamentally redrafted as soon as possible.
Any act that enables more live entertainment in Sydney should definitely be allowed. There is a whole world of great live entertainment in Sydney but for years it has been marginalised to a few specific venues who hold true to thier love of live music. I support this petition and hope that it's success will make all venues more interested in recieving live music .
The laws in NSW regarding this issue are a JOKE, the sydney live music scene is taking a bashing from the Liquor and pokies industries, for what ???
I DEMAND WE CHANGE THIS NOW, IT IS JUST NOT RIGHT

live music at the pub/club level gives creative people the opportunity to develop and refine their art form. This not only encourages and generates a local, cultural identity but can and has ultimately lead to the export of some of the world’s biggest musical acts. So in purely financial terms, the NSW government would be foolish to ignore the issues raised here.
An even better reason to support live music reforms is to simply enrich our lives with higher artistic achievements for society to enjoy. On that score, perhaps this State Labor Government could look to the legacy of the Whitlam Federal Government for inspiration:
“Of all the objectives of my Government, none had a higher priority than the encouragement of the Arts, the preservation and enrichment of our cultural and intellectual heritage..... Our other objectives are all means to an end; the enjoyment of the arts is an end in itself.” E. G. Whitlam.
Please support live music.
Sincerely, Gordon Rytmeister.
It's absurd to penalise live music which provides so much richness when pokies and loud broadcasts are exempt. There is so little live music in Sydney these days, this is another nail in the coffin!
..because nurturing our music industry at a roots level is the only way our country will have a truly strong presence on an international level; ....simple economic sence! And like a good bass player, it may only be noticed when it's gone. Please support our industry; an integral part of this country and it's peoples future, before it's too late.
Imagine where todays music would be without the many influences from our musicians of the 1960's 70's and 80's.There was a vibrant live music scene in Sydney. Artists honed their craft and the audiences witnessed their musical evolution in venues all over Sydney. Many acts went on to major success overseas because they had this background.I support any initiative to help restore Sydney to its former music glory.
Imagine Ireland with a law like this...no live music without a permit...that'd be enough to cause a riot. It totally defeats the traditional purpose and place of music in our society. This law makes no sense.
because I am a musician and event organiser who has witnessed the benefits to the community of creating a richer local music scene and have felt the pain of myself and many others after having this severely disrupted by council regulations.
because the more live music we have the happier our communities will be. No-one wants to see musicans out of work and music lovers missing out through over regulation of venues.
When recorded amplified music is so much louder and more disiruptive to residents it seems ridiculous to jeopardise the ongoing livlihoods of talented local musicians with punitive licencing laws and also to diminish the pleassure of so many live music fans.
because being an up and coming Jazz music phenomenon, I need more places to play and be known and to weed out those talentless beginners who flood out the venues with their free cheapo gigs.
