Goal Progress:
Did you know that other than sleeping, children spend more time watching television than any other activity? (www.parentstv.org) Did you know that 61% of television programs contain violence? (www.safeyouth.org) Did you know that between 1937 and 1999 100% of all animated films produced in the United States involved a form of violence? (www.aap.org) Did you know that only 16% of television programs feature the true consequences for violence? (www.safeyouth.org) Did you know that approximately 70% of television programs contain sexual content? (www.safeyouth.org) Did you know that 89% of video games contain violence? (www.safeyouth.org) Did you know that 66% of children admit to noticing the influence violent media has on their peers? (www.parentstv.org) Did you know that by the time a child reaches the age of eighteen he or she will have already seen 40, 000 murders and 200, 000 acts of violence? (www.mediawise.org) Did you know that violence is the leading cause of death among young adults, adolescents, and children, either in the form of suicide, homicide, or trauma? (ww.mediawise.org) Did you know that these numbers are going to continue to increase if you don’t put a stop to it? The only solution is media education. Bans in the media are impossible to create because everybody has the right to freedom of speech. Therefore, my proposition is this: That a law be passed making it obligatory that a media education course be taught in schools starting from as young as kindergarten. The children of tomorrow are in great danger if they continue to live the way they do today and they don't even know it, but we do, and that is why we need to take action and pass this law. If we can't control how much violence children are exposed to we can atleast control how they perceive it. The goal of media education is to change children’s attitudes about violence, and attempt to make them less aggressive. Media education can help children to understand violence and lead them to a healthy development. Attitudes about violence can be changed over time, just like how attitudes about smoking have changed over time. The main purposes behind media education are to teach children:
-the differences between fantasy and reality
-the motives behind violence in the media
-not to imitate violence in the media
-to understand the true consequences for violence
-that positive motives do not justify violent acts
-to have their own opinions, not to follow what the media says
-to learn that violence is not the answer, and to influence children to go out and experience life rather than watch television, play video games, go on the computer, etc.
Learning about patterns in the media will help children to understand that it is all fiction, and it will then diminish the influence the media has on them. It will also help children to create a brighter perspective on life, and really enjoy being a kid. By giving children the power of being media literate we are giving them the chance to diffuse the supremacy the media holds on the world today. By teaching children about the media at a young age we can help destroy the effects it could have on them in their later years. 65% of the general public says that many of the television shows today, such as The Simpsons, teaches children it's "cool" to disrespect parents. 62% of teenagers today say that sex in the media influences them to have sex when they are too young. (www.parentstv.org) Studies have also shown that sexual content in the media, and even music with promiscuous lyrics can make teens become more sexually active. By starting to educate children about the effects of media at a young age we can even begin to prevent some of the issues involving adolescents as well. With media education in schools there will be less children creating the vision that the world is a scarey place. There will be less children thinking that the world is out to get them. There will be less children being desensitive to human suffering. There will be less children trying to defend themselves by using violent behaviour. There will be less children imitating the violent acts they see on screen. There will be more reasonable and intelligent individuals. There will be more happy children then there are scared children. Media will play a smaller role in the lives of children. Media will stop having an impact on children's lives. Although it is possible that other factors can contribute to violent behaviour in children, there are still programs in schools to help children deal with this. There are programs to deal with violence for everything but the media, so this is what this course is for.
