Please bring Melanie back to the good night show. she's the only reason why my cousins watch the show. they love to see what melanie is gonna make next, the stories she tells and her pet fish hush. Melanie is the reason why I switched from direct tv to comcast. please bring melanie back, my cousins are asking where she is. the video wasn';t even as bad as you say. most of the kids i know who watch that parents are 16- 18 years with toddlers. I belive the message is ok i mean it would cut down on all the underage pregnaucies in the world. lastly please bring melanie back, please.
I don't understand how you people could blow some HARMLESS HUMOR way out of porportion. Thomas the Tank Engine is hosted by George Carlin sometimes and we all know what he's famous for.
I watch the Good Night Show almost every night with my two small children. They love the show and I don't care what Melanie did in the past -- she's doing a great job now and shouldn't be fired for something in the past!
Personally I have watched this with my son and wife for the past year. I have not seen one scrap that validates the dismissal of Melanie. I understand that if she was sending the messaged advocating sexual activities to children that that would dismiss her, however I saw nothing but her educating children and making them happy. unfortunately due to this issue, reguardless of whether melanie is signed on again I will not allow my family to watch this show. My approval of PBS has progressively weakened over time with the introduction of shows that teach bad etiquette then teaching children who in an english speaking country don't have a firm enough grasp on the english language and teaching them spanish is appalling. I do not see it helping my soon to be 3 year old son who has a hard enough time learning to speak english slip in with spanish every now and then. I do not speak spanish, and my son will not be given the option to learn it untill he has a good enough grasp on english first.
I can promise now that I will never tune into sprout or PBS again.
What I find super ironic is all the episodes of Thomas PBS still airs with the George Carlin narration. Melanie’s videos are pretty tame compared to George’s routine. Or even Alec Baldwin (another Thomas narrator). His Schweaty Balls routine from Saturday Night Live a few years ago was just as racy as the videos in question. What about Greg Proops, voice of Bob the Builder - another comedian who has walked on the wild side and has a dirty past. All this seems a tad hypocritical on the part of PBS methinks.
Its ironic because many years ago, a PBS employee did some adult entertainment on a weekly network television show while he was appearing on Seasame Street, and there wasn’t a huff about it.
That employee’s name? Jim Henson.
Henson appeared on the very first season of Saturday Night Live in some really surreal adult sketches called “Land of Gorch”.
Yet, he was never fired from PBS.
Strange double standard here.
Melanie has done a wonderful job as host of the Good Night Show. My daughter loves watching her and has responded very well when Melanie is on. Firing her for doing those videos was a mistake. After all, Mr. Rogers had tattoos on his arms after being in the service. Why do you think he wore the long sweaters? There is always room for forgivness. The kids don't care that she did what she did. Plus, she's an ACTRESS. It was work doing those videos. Let it go, PBS. Do you want everyone to think it stands for Painfully Blatant Stupidity? Bring her back...
PBS has other stars that have played questionable roles. John Ritter for example was in "Threes Company" - a 70s show that was full of sexual suggestions. The show also hit upon being GAY. Give the kids a break and bring back Melanie. What 2-5 year would even understand what role she played in 7 years go. Would a 5 year even care. PBS don't be hypocritical and quit judging actors for their roles they played. They are actors.
I have two children ages 3 & 7, they love melanie, I am haveing a hard time explaining the stupid actions of the tv network over some dumb video they will never know about....
There is a case of a teacher in my area that made a Pornographic tape 10 years ago and the school at which she taught fired her now aint that stupid? I mean if they were still doing it, it'd be one thing, but it is long in their past. I bet your corporate execs have done some stupid things in their past.
This was a bad move by PBS. Alec Baldwin and George Carlin have both been in the news within the last 7 years for doing quite more than a spoof on PSAs. It's not as if we're having to watch a clean movie with a reformed porn star. Bring her back.
But George Carlin can narrate the Thomas the Tank Engine stories? Isn't that a double standard? I don't see you pulling (nor do I want you to by the way)Thomas episodes. Lighten up!
she should not be fired for a joke that was not even publicly shown to everyone. and thats the whole thing about this mess, it was a joke that was not supposed to be taken seriously.
Melanie is a gem! I enjoy her presence on the good night show just as much of my toddler. In fact, the segments with Melanie are the ONLY children's television programming that I actually sit down and enjoy watching myself. The controversial videos are obscure, pointless, and not an issue. If PBS wants to parade Melanie's innocent past to feign their prudish air (Check out how many other guests on PBS programs have had much more offensive affiliations than Melanie), then I want nothing to do with PBS.
