I saw the video in question, and I wonder...how sexist can a station be? George Carlin is known for his adult humor, why hasn't he been fired from Thomas the Tank Engine? Melanie was certainly very young when she made the video--it's a joke, adult humor! I was going to enroll my grandchild in the PBS Kid's Club as a new member, however this unfair position and action against Melanie has made me re-think my financial support of your station.

I think that this is OUTRAGEOUS... WHo cares what she did 7 YEARS ago!!What about Carlin and even Ringo Star? They are people who have been on PBS. My son will never see those videos.. and if he did.. SO WHAT?? I would explain them to him.. that is my job as a parent.. NOT PBS.. Melanie is a wonderful role modle, and my son will miss seeing her everyday! She has help to teach him colors, shapes, exercise... Iain is only 2 1/2 and already knows his alphabet and numbers partly due to Melanie.. WE will no longer watch PBS.. My son will have to watch another station.. Perhaps Noggin... Which is a shame since his favorite show aside from "Goodnight" is "Thomas the tank Engine" SHAME ON YOU PBS!!! SHAME!! BRING MELANIE BACK!!!
#375

Because PBS is being HIGHLY hypocritical! Read up the other entries... you have your "Sesame Street Vet" on the Sopranos nude and that's ok but Melanie makes a spoof and you are rushing off to please the lunatic far-Right fraction of the country. We'll be watching Noggin!

Getting cut loose from Sprout was the best thing that could have happened to Mel's career. She was way to talented for that chopped up, automated looking lousy network . . . BUT . . . we miss her! Guess we'll see her on nogin or a real network soon. I miss the Yoga but that stupid pillow thing can stay gone.

My grandchildren 4 and 2 would look forward to their winding down enchantment with The Night Show and it's effervescent host Melanie. Melanie distinctive sheparding of her program responsibility will be impossible to replicate--The lessons about being charitable and forgiveness Melanie was conveying as no one else can or could should find a reciprocal with the management of PBS/Sprout or else they are not standing as tall as my own grandchildren who connected with Melanie. We are not alone in our support of Melanie, a person of substance Sprout should immediatly re hire.
#367

Brian Kirtland said 07/26/06, 8:00 pm (verified)

This is ridiculous, the material could be shown as is on Saturday Night Live without any editing and nobody would say a thing. This country has gotten so uptight about morals but only as long as the morals in question don't require real thought. PBS just didn't want to hear from all those right wing fanatics that think the rest of the country shares their narrow minded views.

because Melanie does a great job and shouldn't be fired for a spoof she did before she got the job. The spoof was ADULT HUMOR not intended for children. She is a paid actress, and that's what she was doing, ACTING! Let's do the right thing here and bring her back, not ruin her career for something she did before she got the PBS gig, which she is great at!

PBS has gone insane. I don't have to appreciate Mel's Technicalvirgin videos to appreciate that PBS seemingly had no problem with George Carlin (of Thomas the Tank Engine) and Whoopie Goldberg (guest on Sesame Street), and that my daughter loves Melanie.
#352

Stephanie McCarthy said 07/26/06, 7:12 pm (verified)
I support this petition because Melanie was a wonderful host and her past is her past. And honestly, it's not like she was starring in porn or involved in drug deals or terrorist groups. If it weren't for your over-the-top reaction to minor incidents NO ONE would ever have even know about them! Now, Alec Baldwin, who narrates Thomas and Friends, is a major public figure and is constantly in the news for behavior such as anger management problems, sexual harrassment, a nasty divorce and substance abuse - things 100 times worse than what Melanie did. If anyone should be fired from a children's show! Bottom line, you're acting like the religous right and have probably brought more scrutiny and criticism on yourselves with the way you handled than if you had left it alone. You people are ridiculous.

#346

Cheryl Flaim said 07/26/06, 6:56 pm (verified)
Shame on you, PBS Sprout. I suggest you investigate every actor on all of your shows. If you're going to fire one for a moment in her past, you'd better be getting rid of George Carlin on Thomas the Train and anyone else who has ever used "inappropriate language."
#345

Karen Downing said 07/26/06, 6:52 pm (verified)
Because what Melanie did in her past is exactly that, in the past. Those videos have no bearing on what she's doing now. PBS hired Melanie as an ACTRESS. I mean, did they think they were actually hiring an innocent virgin who likes to skip around and sing songs and talks to goldfish and star puppets in her everyday life? It's a "character" people, get a grip! And call me crazy, but when was the last time your pre-schooler said "Hmmm, think I'll Google Melanie and see what comes up". They're little kids, they would never have found the videos! I'm sorry if this comment is a little angry, but frankly, my brain is just about fried from hearing my 2yr old daughter say "Wanna watch Melanie" every night. BRING HER BACK!!

She shouldn't have been fired. You have actors Alec Baldwin who has played numerous violent roles in the movies and raunchy comedian George Carlin doing the narration for Thomas the tank engine. Mel should be re-instated NOW!!!
#312

Brenda Brown said 07/26/06, 5:44 pm (verified)
Is PBS suggesting that we do not know how to differentiate between what is acceptable and what isn't acceptable for our kids? That just because someone ACTED in something else that could be considered objectionable, it removes them from all other possible jobs geared towards children? I am the parent, not PBS. If my kids are watching kids programs and I am doing my job, they will not be watching anything geared towards teens and above. That PBS feels it needs to censor even the image of a person that acted in a 'indie film' years ago from my children is an insult to me. When and where would my children see this, I ask you? I've always been proud of PBS and their willingness to embrace non-conservative topics. So many of their shows have ope ned my eyes to topics I might not have considered oterwise. But if PBS is going to start being narrowminded about such issues as this, I suppose I will have to reconsider the support I give to them.

Did anyone stop to think about how this would impact the children that watch her? How is the world would an audience of 2 to 5 year olds ever even know about these videos? This is ridiculous and I would like to know if all of the executives, and the people judging her have a "crystal clean" past? I seriously doubt it! She is an actress and that is what she was doing in the video....acting fully clothed and being funny! This is the silliest decision I have ever seen and one that I don't think was thought through all the way. Get over it and bring her back!
