because my 2 year old will never see this video. Melanie should not have been fired because it has nothing to do with her job now. Remember Steve Burns (Blue's Clues)played a killer several years ago on "Homicide: Life on the Street". We are not outraged when a performer plays a killer, but the minute it has anything to do with sex in this country, it is taboo.
PBS has gone off the deep end. My daughter cares about watching Melanie. She doesn't care about the executive's supposed "moral high ground". I wonder what THEY have done in THEIR past that should warrent THEM getting fired?!
I would like to invite all of the parents and children who miss Melanie to write to the advertisers on The Good Night Show and let THEM know that we and our children won't be watching from now on. The execs don't seem to care about us or our children, lets see if they care about losing money!
Bring Melanie back! And have the class to appologize with the same fervor with which they dismissed her!
My 3-yr-old daughter was saddend by the news of Ms. Martinez being dismissed. I question this in light of the use of George Carlin and Alec Baldwin as narrators of "Thomas The Train" I have also viewed episodes of Sesame Street in which other actors and musicians (such as Prince) were guests. This is just plain silliness. NO ONE in the Sprout audience will ever associate Melanie with what she has acted in during her distant past. They only will care that she is no longer part of our children's present!
When I heard this I was shocked. I think Melanie did a great job, my child loved her. This was a show that I could sit down and watch with my 3yr old and help with activities. I would much rather her watch The Good Night Show then Dora, dont get me wrong Dora is a great show, but Melanie did so much more, sign language , Spanish, emotions, and much more. We watched that show every night and every night before she went to be we would do the poem to Hush the fish both speaking and signing. I do not agree with PBS. My daughter won’t even watch The Good Night Show now that Melanie is gone.
Domenico, I am part of the Christian right and you don't know what you are talking about. I agree Ms. Martinez shouldn't be fired for a satire she did 7 years ago.
if an actor whose character once brutally murdered innocent civilians and was shown being straddled naked by Sharon Stone, could then become governor of California, then I don't see why Melanie, who did no more than show a sense of humor SEVEN YEARS AGO, can't continue to be the host of a The Good Night Show.
As the parent of a 2 1/2 year old if you had told me two weeks ago that I'd never have to hear Melanie Martinez utter the word "sproutlets" again, I'd have been beside myself with joy. While, frankly, I find Ms. Martinez's segments to be little more than saccharine filler, I quite simply cannot condone firing an actress for an off color video done seven years ago. PBS' mandate, and purported values are ones of inclusion and tolerance. I see little evidence of these here. PBS Kids' target audience are never going to see these clips, but they will certainly notice Melanie's abrupt absence. As a parent I find the notion of having to explain, in some way, that a beloved character has been sacrificed on an altar of fear and Puritanism to be both daunting and sad. The Elmo set need no lessons in hypocrisy and injustice. There is time enough for that later in life.
I support this petition because when my 3 year old boy asked me where Melanie was I had to respond saying her boss felt she was not a good enough role model for 3 year old boys. Rediculous! My son worshiped her.
how is this possible that something from so long ago constitutes this action. What could she possibly do or say to an audience of 3-5 year olds, based on this 7 year old experience. PBS....?
a joke is a joke; and probing the boundaries of humor (and satirizing abstinence-only movements) is as important as teaching kids right from left, up from down, top from bottom...
This is one of my 3 year old's favorite shows. What were you thinking! This is no big deal. He will never see this video and any thinking parent could not possible object. You let George "seven words you can never say on TV" Carlin narrate Thomas the Tank Engine (he does a great job by the way). How about a little consistency.

I have a two year old who watches Melanie religiously. I am absolutely outraged that she was fired! It is amazing that the kids in america can sit and watch South park and all of these other vulgar cartoons, but if some one does a somewhat tasteless infomercial...the are canned! We support melanie and want her back!
This is ridiculous! I thought we were living in the "Land of the Free?" I am sure there are more important things in the world to worry about, but this poor girl needed a job to make money. Shame on PBS.
The actor who played Steve on Blues Clues played a murderer on the drama Homocide. Actors play characters, some adult, some geared toward children's viewing. This woman did nothing wrong, just playing a role as an actor.
I support this petition as a grandparent who enjoys the show with my three year old granddaughter! It is wonderful programming and Melanie Martinez is wonderful. The past does not matter as long as it stays in the past and the young people never hear about it! Fire George Carlin and Baldwin! Get with the real world PBS!
She is an actress, how can they hold her accountable for something done 10 years prior. She did nothing wrong - what 5 year old do you know that's onna look her up on the internet? If this is the case, lets get rid of Thomas the Train until they fire George Carlin and Balwin...have a clue PBS
I am the mom of two small children (4 and 2), who watch PBS each morning as I get ready for work. Melanie Martinez is being fired for a video that she starred in 7 years, as a parent I have to question where the concern here is. The onus of keeping my child safe online is on me, not PBS or internet nannies.
Her firing is ridiculous and I think a lot less of PBS as a result. My kids love her and not only that - those shorts were funny! Please bring her back.
Thanks for upsetting my little girl's entire life. Who cares what happened 7 yrs. ago. It's not like she committed a terrible crime. My daughter would have never known about it. Bring her back!
Please bring Melanie back. She did a WONDEERFUL job on SPROUT, and was my son's favorite host!
I also cannot believe the hypocrosy of PBS...an actress from Seame Street appeared LAST YEAR, performing oral sex in one scen on the Sopranos, with PBS' BLESSINGS. (Published in the NY Times.) The Sopranos is a show that is widely watched and full of violence and much more suexually graphic materials. Nobody woudl've seen this video unless you folk did not fire her.
HEY- as parents we choose our kids television. SPROUT AND Melanie were big reasons why we glued to it every evening.
You are really over-reacting, and in doing so, you are dissappointing and upsetting young children, not to mention ruinng a young actress' lilvelihood for a choice she made 7 YEARS AGO.
I've seen the video and it's nothing to be outraged about. We've all done things in our past that we're not too proud of, this is really nothing, and the kids won't see her technical virgin video unless an adult finds it for them.
