What kind of values does it teach our children when someone like Melanie gets fired for being open and honest about something from her past? Seven freaking years ago! BRING HER BACK!
Its bullshit. Next all adult s will be fired for not being virgins or havig a drink (when children are not present). an adults' adult life has nothing to do with kids and the kids wont know or care or be tuned into any of it .BRING HER BACK
You can't fire someone based on something they fif years ago, something that is in the past. If it has no real impact here, why even get into it? This is the one of the stupidest things yet, and I demand that you give Melanie back her job. "Technical Virgin" is her past. Remember that. You can't change the past, or hide it away. it comes out eventualy.
I was so surprised not to see Malenie and her newest side kick Star.WE miss her! I watch the Good Night program nightly with my four year old granddaughter.I think Melenie is a wonderful host! I especially love the way she ends the program... "with dreams to dreams". As always, there is never room for forgiveness in this type of situations, because people in authority place themselves in the status of "GOD",never showing understanding of mercy! What a shame! We do not live in a perfect world so why expect people to be perfect! I bet the individual making the decision to fired Melanie has done worst! Let sees your past for that matter if all of us were to have our past deplayed I'm sure someting could be found to place us in a bad light! Please bring Melanie back. The little sprouts watching her would forgive why can't you.
I suppose PBS feels that merely employing someone with differing values implies acceptance of said values? Or are we considering the possibility that Ms. Martinez is brainwashing children? Re-hire Melanie Martinez.
Robin Williams did the voice for Genie on Aladdin...and he has played in a lot of inappropriate movies for the 3 year old viewing audience. You are threatened because she is speaking the truth. Those Teen Abstinence programs target young girls who are supposed to protect themselves while the boys are not made to be responsible. As a woman who has been through all that, it's time to really say it: a kid is a sexual being and both the BOY and the GIRL are responsible for their hormonal responses. As their parents we are responsible for giving them information and support during their sexual maturation.
Melanie was the best thing on TV for ages 1-4. How tragic that PBS management are so clueless when you consider the excellent record and programming the network has.
I had no idea that PBS was a conservative watchdog. Maybe PBS is losing credibility with a different audience segment by making this sort of judgemental decision.
Oh, please! Let's all grow up a little! I let my 3 year old watch PBS, and my husband and I watched the 30 second "PSA". We laughed our heads off! I like Melanie more now!!
My son loves her, and now he refuses to even watch the Good Night Show. Way to go, PBS! Didn't you hear that nobody is perfect? It's not like her Virgin video is airing on your channel.
As a public health professional I support the Technical Virgin expressing the absurdity of abstinence only programs.
As a mother of a 2 year old I support Melanie and thank her teaching my daughter many things. No one can replace her.
My daughter LOVES Melanie. As a parent I am very upset that she has been taken away from my little girl. I have no problem with her activities seven years ago. Should we all be holier-than-thou?
To all of the Melanie Martinez fans out there, former host of “The Good Night Show” this is for you.
PBS Kids Sprout President Sandy Wax the person who axed Melanie is the former SoapNet senior vice president of programming planning, scheduling and acquisitions. The official response given by Mrs. Wax for Melanie’s termination from PBS Kids Sprout was “PBS Kids Sprout has determined that the dialogue in this video is inappropriate for her role as a preschool program host and may undermine her character’s credibility with our audience.”
Please give me a break…not even a whole break, just part of one. I have a 2 ½ yr. old and I don’t see her being able to log onto the internet and get any distorted views of things for at least 8 years. What a crap reason for firing someone. Remember, these video’s which are very funny by the way, were 7 yrs. ago. She loved Melanie, as I’m sure the millions of viewers, both young and old did as well. We still sing the “Good Night” song she ended the program with.
So, it’s okay for the President of PBS Kids Sprout to have been involved with Soapnet that airs situation shows with sex scenes, spousal abuse, lying, cheating, stealing, etc…to the umpteenth degree??? There are zero repercussions for her past, right? As Mel Brooks once said “It’s good to be the King.”
If this doesn’t fall under the pot calling the kettle black, I don’t know what does. Feel free to flood the PBS mailbox w/letters as well as phone calls and emails.

My 3 yr old loves Melanie and misses her dearly. PBS kids is no longer viewed in our household except for a few minutes each night to see when Melanie will return.
for reasons similar to others who have signed. I am a long time fan of (much mentioned here) George Carlin and was tickled to find out that he narrates many of the Thomas episodes. Do I have a problem with it? NO.
Did Melanie do some things in her past that she regrets? Yes.
Has anybody else over at PBS? Most of you (at PBS) will only know the real answers for sure.
Just because Melanie's "real answer" was broadcast on the Internet, is that reason enough to make her walk the plank? Those at PBS who know their own "real answers" should know the answer.
as other parents have pointed out, Melanie's firing is the height of hypocrisy. Her 30-second spots were nowhere near the level of profanity that I have heard from George Carlin, and were also nowhere near as offensive as Alec Baldwin's many appearances on Saturday Night Live (Canteen Boy, anyone??) My son loves Melanie and her show has always put a big smile on his face, and I especially appreciated her ability to soothe kids when he was sick and her sho perked him up.
Wake up, PBS. My son enjoys your programming, but I cannot support any enterprise that sends him the message that it is OK to hold men and women to different ethical and moral standards.
One more thing: that little star is just irritating, and it serves no purpose at all. Bring Melanie back!
It is unfortunate that PBS has caved into fear of bad publicity. For an organization that touts itself as being open minded and considering unpopular points of view, it seems hypocritical for this organization to fire an employee for speaking her mind (albeit by spoofing a public service message, in this case). Nevertheless, who cares that these videos are on the Internet. I don't expect my 2 year old to find them, and parents of older kids should be supervising their children any way. While I personally think Melanie is annoying, my son likes watching her on Sprout. If PBS has any remaining moral conviction or ties to its roots, it should defend Melanie.
What a person did before being employed by you has nothing to do with the way they do thier job for you. If you dig into the past of all your employees, you would have to fire all of them.
