I am a Lutheran pastor and the father of two preschoolers. I don't condone Melanie's indiscretion of 7 years ago, but here firing is all out of proportion, and only draws attention to the controversy. She's wonderful with the kids. Bring her back.
She shouldn't be fired for something she did several years ago that's not even that bad. Besides, it's not like she tried to show it off or did anything inappropriate while she was working for PBS, so they had no good reason to do what they did.
I don't have any kids, but if I did I would think that Sprout's programming is appropriate for their age level. You are strongly overestimating PBS relevance in TV programming by firing such a beloved figure.
because the only inappropriate behavior in this entire incident falls on the side of the PBS executives. What negative effect can harmless parodies above the level of comprehension of the desired demographic have? Along that line of logic, one might as well prohibit children from enjoying the Shrek franchise due to Eddie Murphy's profanity-laced stand-up material and his other mainstream movies.
TV networks should not be punishing their employees for creative endeavours, especially those created long before they worked in television. I expect better of PBS especially.
My daughter loves Melanie, as do my wife and I. We want her back! Those "inappropriate" videos are not even that bad, they're just silly. Please bring back Melanie.
If I understand correctly, Ms. Martinez was fired for some parody videos she performed in 7 years ago, which were of an adult nature. I expect better of PBS, as her current content is in no way connected with her previous actions. If one is offended by the parody videos, then one should not watch them and parents should monitor their children's viewing habitats. I find it interesting that Fox news will retain someone who arguably sexually harrasses co-workers and PBS fires a children's program entertainer for past humor intended for adults. A truly sad commentary on the state of Public Broadcasting.
I think it is wrong for PBS to fire Melanie. What she did in the video was funny and I feel that she should not be fired over it. My grandson watches Sprout and he misses her.
Have the decisionmakers ever watched George Carlin in concert? How Melanie can be let go for an individual commercial 7 years ago and Thomas stays is beyond comprehension.
I am appalled by PBS action. Melanie herself disclosed the skit, which was 7 years ago, way before she was affiliated with Sprout. We are not supporting PBS this year, this disgusts me. This is sexist - George Carlin narrates Thomas, for gosh' sake
You need to give her back her job, and really wake up to the realities of making a name for yourself in media. Her former shows don't hurt her prospects for kid shows one bit, and if you don't believe me, prepare for one hell of a lawsuit.
She did nothing wrong. As usual the owners of the program are not listening to the public and ran to judgement before asking the people who generate their income.
If you're going to continue to waste my tax dollars, at least waste them on a witty and entertaining lady.
Misplaced autocratic delusions of morality have no place in a publically funded venue.
She appeared in a SPOOF. Get a clue that Melanie Martinez poses no threat to your station or your programming. I am a mother of 4 and a grandmother of 3. I have some idea of what is innaproiate for children. Or is your real concern some lawsuit or boycott from some idiot fringe organization??
My children of age 4 and 6 love to watch The Good Night Show because Melanie is in it. This is the best kids show ever because of Melanie. She is very sweet and makes our children laugh and smile. Melanie has created a bond with her little viewers as well as with the parents, and no one will be a able to replace that. I don't think that PBS realizes the magnitude of their mistake. Kids LOVE MELANIE, don't take her away from them.
Please don't take her away from the kids. What she did was years ago -- ancient history to be precise. It's over, and she has moved on. I think it's pathetic for her to be fired because of something that happened years ago, not to mention were less than a minute long.
because that it is stupid you would fire someone for being an adult,it was funny nothing serious.i have seen way worse things.especially since she did it like 3 years ago, common you dumb F**KS,its not like the kids are ever goin to see or understand the video
until their at least 13.
I support Ms. Martinez. If PBS support performers that have a large history of no good- then PBS has lied to all of us if this actress is fired! Shame on you! So, I guess she has to be a million dollar product to support. Imagine if your viewers suppported you on only what they believed in. I thought people supported PBS-because it was PBS. A service I thought could not be found anywhere else-however-you have proven to be like all the other stations. Greedy-self-centered-and two-faced!
My 4 year old cries every day because she misses Melanie and wants her to come back. No Preschooler is ever going to know about the other videos. They just love Melanie
This seems like McCarthyesque blacklisting simply because someone disagrees with abstinence policies that public health research shows are ineffective. Bring her back!
This is ridiculous. They have guest spots by comics who've said far worse, but they fire a beloved character because of a spoof done years ago. Ridiculous!
