My family misses seeing Melanie on the Goodnight Show. To be honest, we don't even watch SPROUT after 6pm anymore because she's not on there and she was one of the main reasons we enjoyed watching the station every night.
Why you show Thomas the Tank Engine narrated by both Alec Baldwin and George Carlin to air but fire a girl for a stupid 30 second internet film that doesn't even contain profanity or nudity is ridiculous.
PBS needs to grow up. If you take of Melanie for that....What about George Carlin on Thomas the train. Have you heard his stand up routine. It's a whole lot worse than anything Melanie could ever do. And by the way both people are Hillarious, Get a life PBS and a new sponser, You're not gonna get our money anymore.
If kids who watch Sprout are viewing the clips for which she was fired, perhaps the finger should be pointed at the people who let them watch it, and not an actress who was playing a role.
Melanie was wonderful and I am shocked at the hypocrisy of her firing. Look at the 'character' of some of the guests on Sesame Street! My daughter cried and cried when I told he that Melanie wouldn't be back on the show. Thanks PBS.
I totall support this petition and Melanie's Shame on U sprout for thinking it was your job to tell me how to raise my kid. Stick to childrens programing and leave the sensoring to the parents. God Bless u Melanie!!!!
Shame on you. From a viewer's perspective, it appears that you are "picking" on Melanie Martinez-and for what?....for acting in some harmless unknown film or two?....as if that's the worst you're supporting....thereARE worse people to take a stand against....Melanie is more PBS-kids Sprouts than Carlin...you should be ashamed of yourselves!!!
I support this petition. We miss Melanie...we used to stretch and sing with her... now Sprout is just like all the other run-on cartoon channels...Melanie gave the channel personality and personalization. I hope you'll bring her back or you may lose your dedicated viewers.
What toddler is going to 1) be on the internet looking at a clip like that or 2) understand what it's talking about.
If they can, there's a problem with the parents - Melanie has nothing to do with it.
I do understand how the content of the videos could offend some parents, however they are not substantially different then something one might view on Saturday Night Live. I have a three year old, and while I won't let him watch SNL I would have no problems with him watching Melanie in the context of PBS Sprout.
It was 7 years ago. No one has a perfect past. My 2 year old learned a lot of new words and songs watching Melanie. She won't even watch the good night show anymore.
my daughter loves her. i loved to watch my little girls eyes light up when she would see melanie on the screen. when i told her that melanie would not be coming back she cried. SHAME ON YOU PBS KIDS SPROUT!!!!!!
Melanie has been unfairly
penalized for exercising her
right to seek employment - and this happened long before her PBS job. PBS has exercised poor judgement in this case
In a world filled with indiscretion and deceit no one should be punished for being honest. Sometimes the choices we make are not the for the best in the long run. But freedom of choice is a cornerstone of our society. The videos are parody. Let have a sense of humor folks. They are not intended for children. If PBS is concerned about kids from her audience finding these clips than there are much bigger problems at hand, like allowing your children to surf the web unsupervised without and parental control settings. Anyway bring back Melanie she did nothing wrong!!!
This is CRAZY. What she did was a comedy sketch, years ago. As a sketch comedy host and supporter of public television, you have GRAVELY dissapointed me with this action. This girl has done nothing wrong. Reinstate her immediately, or I will no longer in good conscience be able to support PBS.
As a mother of three children, I can understand the desire of PBS to protect the audience it means to entertain. However, your audience would not be watching Ms. Martinez do anything other than be on the Good Night Show -- these videos she did several years before she was on your program (and, might I add, do not show nudity) and no child who fits the demographic for the Good Night Show would go looking for dirty pictures of their favorite host. Your knee-jerk reaction was misinformed and definitely bad judgment. I strongly recommend you reconsider your position.
I believe she is a great host for the show. The children watching this show obviously have not seen the vidio's and that is who we aretrying to protect. No one is perfect and should be given the chance to better themselves. The people who play Seseme Street characters are no saints and they are still on PBS.
I can't believe she was fired when she told PBS about the video in advance. The best thing about the Good Night Show was Melanie. Let's be realistic;how many children who are of age to watch and enjoy the Good Night Show, will be searching the internet for the kind of videos that Melanie was previously featured in? I would say not any!!! So when would a child ever make the association or know what Melanie was doing before the Good night Show? My kid loves watching her on the Good Night Show, and frankly, we don't care to watch it now that Melanie is gone. I pay an additional $4.95 a month to Direct TV for additional channels including PBS Sprout, but without Melanie on the Good Night Show, I don't think that it's worth the extra $ a month. Maybe I should just cancel the PBS Sprout channel all together, and maybe I will encourage other parents to do the same. Bring Melanie back or PBS will continue to lose support and funding!!!
because I agree with all the points made by Johnnie Durham and Todd Lockhart. I think a poll of the public's opinion by PBS would have been more appropriate before acting. They need to remember who pays their bills (since they disrupt programming with the drive annually, you would think they would give the public more regard!)
It was a joke-- jesus, get over this. If you got rid of everyone in the show business that ever participated in any questionable actions, be it blow, keggers, BDSM or sex with underage hookers, you'd be left with Rush Limbaugh....
oh. wait....
My niece and nephew love Melanie and firing her only serves to deprive young children of a television personality they have come to love and trust. Listen to the parents of your audience and bring Melanie back!
Wow she did the right thing by notifying PBS of the OLD video and PBS does the wrong thing. Great message to our kids. I guess she would have been better off not telling the truth. Sounds like you fired a good role model to me. Hire her back and publicly appologize to all of us parents for giving our children the wrong message.
Melanie Martinez is the perfect person for the Good Night Show and our kids loved her. She has a genuine enthusiasm and energy to which children respond in kind. To fire her for having a sense of humor is ridiculous. The material that got her fired was neither graphic nor profane, and was certainly not accessible to PBS Sprout's primary viewing audience. A disservice has been done not just to Ms. Martinez, but to the entire viewing audience of the Good Night Show. I boycotted NBC for years for past transgressions, I can certainly boycott PBS Sprout since the primary viewing time in out house is during the Good Night Show - and, without Melanie, what's the point. Fix this injustice, apologize and bring Melanie back.
