My son who is 16 mo would stop in his tracks to run to the living room EVERY TIME he would hear Melanie's voice. Without the action of firing her, I would have never known anything about her "resume" nor would my child. He enjoys the human interaction segments much more than any puppets (i.e. firefly). If gays and lesbians can make guest appearances on Sesame Street, why can't Melanie be allowed to move forward in her career with the Good Night Show? Of course, after being stabbed in the back, she probably won't want her job back & that's just a great great shame!!
I find it absolutely horrific that PBS of all things would make a huge deal out of something that was clearly intended as comedy. Whats next pull Sesame Street because of homoerotic overtones?
Now I know why my 15month old son is entranced with Melanie. It MUST have been all that sex appeal shining through her babysitter character. 80% of my friends who have children all say their kids were mesmerized with Melanie, the formula was working. PLEASE BRING HER BACK!
I support the petition - Hey PBS, worry about real problems. Lik why don't you buy a second set of clothes, my kids are wondering if there is something wrong with her because she is always wearing the same clothes?
PBS has always been more than a Television Station; It's a public service, and as such should stand for civil rights. The fact that association to a purely subjective "past crime" can effect employment by PBS is insulting to both citizens of the country and to the workers of the film industry who stand before a camera.
Shame on PBS.
My son loves Melanie. If Mr. Noodle can continue "talking" to Elmo, then certainly Melanie can survive a little Saturday Night Live-type humor? Bring her back!
firing her only teaches the children that it's OK to punish someone for haveing a different opinion from the people in power, which is the opposite of what this country is about.
My children enjoyed watching Melanie; I thought she had a nice presence; and the hypocrisy is overwhelming. If I'm able to seperate George Carlin the comedian from George Carlin the Thomas narrator, than I am certainly able to seperate Sprout's "Melanie" from the young actress that made a spoof seven years ago. Give me a break. Sprout exec's should be ashamed of their actions.
I support this petition and think Melanie should be rehired. She did a wonderful job, my kids ( ages 2 and 3.5) enjoyed her and I am refusing to allow them to watch Sprout until she returns.
My little girl loved Melanie. She would always stop what she was doing and run to the TV whenever Melanie came on.
I think the 7 year old videos are a total non-issue.
PBS execs should be ashamed of themselves.
My 9 month old son loves Melanie along with my 2 year old nephew, 2 year old niece. She was great and kept my son entertained. My son doesn't sleep anymore that Melanie is not sending him off to bed at night.
My two kids loved Melanie as Host of PBS' Goodnite Show....They are only 3 and 20mos. but even they notice her glaring absence. They don't know nor do they care about a spoof she did 7 years ago, and I'm guessing when they are old enough to understand, they will think it was funny....just like I did.
Please bring Melanie back it was something she did seven years ago, get over it. The kids love her and the parents love her. Without Melanie The goodnight show just isn't worth watching anymore.
We taped one episode of the goodnight show with Melanie right before she was terminated...and when we decide to watch "The Goodnight Show", we put in our tape. Whatever is happening on that show right now we don't care for.
The network needs to look at what a great job that Melanie has done on the Goodnight Show and what she has been teaching preschoolers everyday, not what she did when she was just starting out. Look at all the other actors who have done worse and have not been punished for what they did. Melanie Martinez is a great educator and we need her back for our children!
My child just loved Melanie, we all have a past, she was honest with you. What 2 year old or 7 year would every find that information? I can't even find it.
My daughters loved Melanie and would stop whatever they were doing to watch her as opposed to the actual shows. We don't watch the Goodnight Show much now that she's gone.
Who is PBS protecting? My 2 year old, whom loves Melanie and her "Good Night Show", has never seen her spoof PSAs and I doubt she will in the near future. If any parent is upset by her appearence in these video then they just need to insure their kids don't see them. It's pretty simple. An adult can seperate Melanie Martinez from the characters she portrays and kids need never know the diference.
The only reason we keep directv is PBSkidssprout. If you are firing this young lady for something done 7 years ago we'll do without PBS kids sprout. My son adores her show and doesn't know anything of these videos from the past. I've seen the videos and find them funny. How can PBS advocate freedom of speech yet respond in this way? Ironic, everyone assumes PBS is all about freedom and FOXnews is one-sided. I can't say I'm surprised to see that neither is true.
my daughter is still asking me where Melanie went..how would a 2 year old now anything about the "technical virgin" video if PBS hadn't called attention to it..grow up
My son loved Melanie and cried when he realized she wouldn't be on the Goodnight Show any longer. We will no longer watch the show until she is reinstated!
i am very angry withpbs.. my son loves melanie,he has a pic of her on his wall, an dhes only 2...pbs really screwed up ,big time...what she did back then sholdnt reflect on her now.....its not like shes doing that stuff on the show....
Tonight I tried to explain to my 2 year old daughter why "her Melanie" isn't on the Good Night Show any more....and I couldn't come up with one good reason! This is just nonsense! Melanie, we love you and miss you!
My four year old has been asking for Melanie for three weeks. I told her that maybe she was on vacation. SHAME on PBS for their inane logic to pull a most beloved character out from under all the preschoolers in the USA who unwound with Melanie.
Please bring back Melanie!!! My 16 month old has learned so much from her little segments and she and I really miss her!!! We're little sprouts now but just watch us grow... up up up up up we go!!!
I can't believe that PBS would fire an actress over something she did BEFORE she worked for them. - I'm a liberal, and I thought of PBS as a "Liberal" network who was against censoring people.
Guess I was wrong..
