She's an actress. The video she was in was an acting spot and a joke. My three year old doesn't care about that video and won't ever see it but she did like Melanie. She made the video before she had this job..its not like it was a drunk driving conviction or drug overdose (which people seem to readily forgive in elected politicians)...give me a break.
Seriously, what a crock. The network can't come to terms with the fact that people are multi-dimensional. The network can't expect anyone to be a cardboard cutout of its expectations. My advice to the network: Get over it.
Bring back Melanie. My little girl loves her!
Who cares about ``Technical Virgins,'' which Melanie made 7 years ago. Isn't George ``7 Dirty Words'' Carlin on ``Thomas the Train'?
This is why she was fired? My kids loved watching Melanie. I can not believe how anal people are, especially when it comes to something made seven years ago, and it's not even dirty in any way. My kids have seen worse on an episode of Arthur which was aired on your channel. You know which one i am talking about, the one that talked about profanity. All you heard though the whole show were bleeps. Now thanks to that, my kids come up to me and say Hey daddy, BLEEP!! And where i ask them where they learned that, they say DW said it on t.v.
PBS, give it up already. BRING MELANIE BACK!!!
We want Melanie back! This wasn't a porn video, it was comedy. If they get rid of Melanie the Dr. Ruth shouldn't have a PBS show and George Carlin should not be on Thomas the Train!!!!
Double Standards.
The removal of Melanie was not only far too abrupt but done for reasons that in my opinion defy common sense. This disruption sent parents scrambling to find preschool friendly answers and brings unnecessary attention to an innocuous video clip that most would have otherwise been unaware of. I feel it is fairly safe to assume that the target audience of the Good Night Show is not searching the internet for this type of release. In addition, to state that it undermined the wholesome image of the network is ludicrous. Personalities such as Madonna and Brittney Spears are producing content for children; I hardly think that Melanie is in any way a threat. We would like to see her reinstated as host
this is ridiculous and very Brave New World-ish. She is being punished for an act in the past, and has not done anything deemed "inappropriate" since. In agreeance with #976, what else can she, you, or myself not do in the future because of something in the past? If this sets the standard, we are all in trouble.
I support this petition because she brings joy to my 5 year old daughter. Her voice is beautiful and she has such a serene way of communicating with children. Please bring her back!
If someone doesn't stand up to the PTC bullying of the FCC then PBS will go away, and we'll only have pablum to watch on all Network TV. I thought PBS was about diverse opinions and choice. What's next, POV?
Ridiculous! The reason you fired her should be the same reason to keep her in your employ. To reach teens is not an easy task (remember when you were one?). Isn't humor a better vehicle to reach that age group than some boring adult preaching "JUST SAY NO"? I have seen both spots and think they were done with good taste.
Melanie is awesome... It is a HUGE and RIDICULOUS judge of character to terminate her because of something she did SEVEN years ago!!! Obviously she is wonderful or PBS wouldnt have hired her in the first place. Give us all abreak and BRING HER BACK!
My son loves Melanie. He wants to see her again. It is nuts to hold someone accountable for a JOKE they made seven years ago. Using that standard, is ANYONE qualified for ANY job, ever?
As a mother of a 2-year old, I find the actions PBS unjust to Melanie. Just because of Melanie's job choices in the past, I would not stop watching the Good night show with Melanie's as the host. I would like to see Melanie back.
This firing is ridiculous. The only plausible reason for it is to appease uptight, right-wing people--people who want to destroy public television, anyway.
As the individual is an "actress" by profession, there may be roles that are different from later roles. If she is a competant actress, then the roles she has performed in the past should not be used as a discrimination point for her current roles.
I am a father of an 8 month old child, and I believe that this termindation is unjust and Melanie's past work or projects has no bearing on her current job and she should be re-instated.
I think PBS used poor judgement in making this decision.I have seen Dr. Ruth on PBS shows and I am sure almost everyone knows what her specialty is. I have also seen comedians on Seseme Street like Robin Williams who do stand up shows with sexually explicit material and explicit language. And what about the rumors that "Mr. Rogers" was a sniper for a special military unit in the Vietnam War and had killed numerous Vietnamese soldiers. All of these people share somthing in common with Melanie Martinez, they have a unique way of connecting with children through television. My 2 year old daughter watchted "The Good Night Show" every night and would sing and dance along with Melanie. I consider that a gift. The last thing Im worried about is my child clicking on a link that contains the technicalvirgin videos. I have a feeling Melanie's career is far from over and PBS has just suffered a considerabl loss.
little kids ages 2-5(her viewing audience)should not be seeing her technical virgins video for the next 10 or so years so whats the problem??? MY KID WATCHES IT AND SO DO I!!!!!!!!!!
I think PBS has made a terrible mistake. If she was doing her job well, it doesn't matter about two videos she did on the internet years ago. What kid or parent would have ever made the connection if PBS hadn't done it for them? That's ridiculous. It's not like she's Paul Reubens, doing these things during her children's show...
PBS: Stop the hypocrisy. Ms. Martinez is an actress whose work has had a positive effect on children nationwide. Stop the knee-jerk reactions and just let her do what she was doing.
EVERYONE makes mistakes. EVERYONE deserves to make an honest living. It seems a reconciliation initiated by PBS with Melanie Martinez is a move in the right direction for all parties. Thank you.
