Gaje Jeffrey Florence, 6, was killed while playing in his own driveway after a women backed into our drive and ran over him. The women was charged with Negligent Homicide. In the state of Oklahoma, negligent homicide only carries out a one year maximum sentence. Negligent homicide is described as an act of one person not be concerned at results in a death. For example: If this women would have been paying attention then Gaje Florence would still be alive.

This women had previous charges of driving under suspension as she had been that day of the incident. She had also had a previous charge for a hit and run and filling out a faulse police report. This women falls under the category of being negligent while driving under numerous occasions. There is no need to be negligent while driving.

If this women would have taken the time to look behind her vehicle before pulling into someone else's driveway, then this incident would have never occured. This is also an example of being negligent.

We the undersigned ask that you sign this petition asking for your help to give a more harsh punishment to those who fall under this category and are charged with negligent homicide. There should be a harsher punishment for negligent homicide and not just a one year sentence term.

Obviously, none of the lawmakers who approved the punishment ever had a family member killed by

Each case should be determined on its merits; this woman, a repeat offender, certainly deserves more than one year.

There is no reason for the loss of another human life to warrant such a light sentence as punishment. When a child is taken from us due to another's lack of social responsibility, it is vital for our national and state laws to have punishment reflect the severity of the crime.

These parents will never experience what could've been the life of their child. One year for taking another person's life is an insult, to say the least. This woman should lose her license permanently and it should have taken place after the second offense. If this were your child, what do you think would be a fair punishment?

I was struck by a motorist on my motorcycle in March 2007 -- and it was no fault of my own. I was critically injured and still cannot walk after five months. Two of my friends were struck and killed by the same motorist. The Mayes County DA only charged the man with two counts of negligent homicide and nothing was charged on my account. Why does the state of Oklahoma allow such a minor charge for something so violent and irreversible? Other states require a 7-year prison minimum and consider this charge to be a felony. Why do we let people get away with murder?

It should me much harsher especially since he was in his own driveway and not out playing in the street. And due to her previous charges of neglect . They should have looked at the entire situation , its one thing to have an accident it's another to just have stupidity and carelessness.

There are people who do a lot less and get more time. How can a life be worth only one year tops!?!?!

My nephew should have never had his life taken like this. This women had no right to do it and I agree that there should be a harsher punishment for people who are charged with negligent homicide.

This is an absolute abomination that anyone can get off with such a horribly light sentence. She should be forced to get mental help , have her license permanently suspended and locked up for at the very least 10 years and should have to speak to groups about the damage she did and driving so wrecklessly and carelessly. !Shana Dines
