Recently a woman picking up an ambien prescription from Walgreens Pharmacy was severly ridiculed and mistreated with labels such as "crazy" and "psycho."

Too often, the mistreatment of the mentally ill takes place within our socities, and more often than not, goes unpunished. Yet, there is such a variety of mental illnesses, a large amount of symptoms, of treatments, and of medications. People suffering from mental illness range from mild to severe and with proper treatment can, and do, lead productive and exemplary lives, contribute postively to our global community, add beauty to the world, and are justifiably labelled as "normal" as those who do not suffer from mental illness.

The stigma of mental illness is long outdated and any form of discrimination and mistreatment is simply criminal. Statistics show that a large segment of the population have mental health problems. Even worse, existing goverment aid for the mentally ill is poor, with many people being unable to receive the help they need.

The remediation of this problem is long overdue. All organizations that support human and civil rights and the mentally ill communities across the world, along with government bodies, the media, and other institutions and individuals of power, must correct the state of affairs for people who suffer from depression, chemical imbalances, neuroses, psychoses, post-traumatic stress disorder, self-injury, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other illnesses. This issue needs to be taken to the mainstream and understanding and awareness needs to reach the general population. Do what you can to make this happen.

I support this petition. Mental illness has been the replacement for leprosy for too long. We might not lock the mentally ill up physically, but society locks them down socially.
