Parolable Life Sentences are being treated unfairly by the Department of Correction and the Parole Board. Parolable Life Sentence means you are serving a Second Degree Life Sentence, which is Parolable! The Michigan Department of Correction is treating Second Degree Life the same way they treat First Degree Life.
First Degree Life means you are serving a mandatory Life without the possibility of Parole. As you can see there is a difference between Second Degree Life with parole, and First Degree Life without parole. The Michigan Department of Correction and the Parole Board is saying that, "Life Means Life" and they don’t care whether you are serving Second Degree Life or First Degree Life sentence. They are completely ignoring the law; because Second Degree Life and First Degree Life were never meant to be the same. If it were meant to be the same they would only have one Life Sentence. It was meant to be different because one is more severe than the other. Since the Michigan Department of Correction and the Parole Board is saying, "Life Means Life" they have automatically raised Second Degree Life which is Parolable to First Degree Life which is mandatory Life without the possibility of Parole.
Nothing could be more unjust then what the Michigan Department of Correction and the Parole Board is doing. Please see the link below for statistics which shows that Second Degree Lifers were only serving between 10-15 yrs before being paroled. Now, I have 30 years in on a Second Degree Life Sentence, and I have never even been considered seriously for a Parole. Please see the link below for statistics where First Degree Lifers were getting commutations once they had served 22 ½ years. I have almost 10 more years in then they did. Please also see article from Chairman of the Michigan Parole Board from the past (also found on link below), in which he states that Lifer’s are a safe risk, not only in Michigan but nationwide! The Michigan Department of Correction, and the Parole Board know this to be True. However, they continue to hold prisoners up from Parole, costing the Michigan Tax Payer Millions of dollars per year ($30,000 a yr per inmate). This money could be used for Health Care and Education. We are asking you to support and sign this petition to pass the House Bills put in by Representative Bill McConico (5654, 5655, and 5656). Representative Bill McConico’s bills would move Michigan toward a more Fair and Cost-Effective justice system.
Finally, the question is why were they letting Lifer’s go? In the past, Parolable Lifers were getting out in 10-15 years and First Degree Lifers were getting out after 22 ½ years. Now it seems no one can get out.

Money talks and you know what walks. The state is making too much money so that\'s why so many inmates are not being released when their time is up! I support this 100%

As a Social Worker I see many bad things and people. Overall the sentences for many in general appear to be unfair. Life in prison should be reserved for the most repulsive crimes. Murder can not always be considered the most repulsive. The loved ones of victims often act on emotion. I believe prisons and parole boards consider economic factors. These factors do not justify life sentences. Keeping people in jail till death is cruel an unjust
