We, the undersigned, are requesting the State of Minnesota to enact an infertility insurance mandate. Currently, 15 states in the U.S. are required to offer or treat infertility. These mandates were designed to make conception more affordable (and less emotionally draining) to the 1 of 6 couples that struggle with the disorder. Studies in mandated states have shown that infertility mandates do not greatly increase premiums. In some respects, the mandate helps to save health care dollars. In non-mandated states, since women and men cannot afford more than one cycle, they may dangerously request to transfer more embryos than may be safe. As a result, they may become pregnant with multiples, increasing the cost of prenatal care, delivery, and neonatal intensive care. With multiples, women are usually required to be on bed rest, causing insurance companies and employers large losses. Furthermore, in mandated states, infertility treatments are more successful and less risky for the mother and child. Without the assistance of insurance to pay for treatments ranging from medications to IVF, many people will never experience the joy of pregnancy, childbirth, or watching their child grow. Current legislation deems pregnancy and childbirth as "unnecessary" and "optional". Without children, there is no future and by denying infertility treatment, you are robbing millions of people from a future full of laughter, happiness, and potential.

Dealing with Infertility can be one of the most devastating things a couple will ever experience. Infertility is a medical problem that requires treatment, and many couples cannot afford to pay for it.

It is insane that drugs like birth control and viagra and prenatal care would be covered but not ART, including IVF. Children are the future of not only our nation, but our world. Denying coverage for people struggling with the heartbreak of infertility is essentially relegating them to the status of second class citizen. We too deserve to know the joys of parenthood and family.
