Dealing with Infertility can be one of the most devastating things a couple will ever experience. Infertility is a medical problem that requires treatment, and many couples cannot afford to pay for it.
It is insane that drugs like birth control and viagra and prenatal care would be covered but not ART, including IVF. Children are the future of not only our nation, but our world. Denying coverage for people struggling with the heartbreak of infertility is essentially relegating them to the status of second class citizen. We too deserve to know the joys of parenthood and family.
My first child, conceived through IVF was fully covered by insurance, within 3 months of her birth, IVF coverage was dropped. Two years later our family was covered under a different policy and I was able to pursue IVF again. Three years after my first child, I conceived again, twins. Within three months of their birth coverage for infertility dropped to a maximum cap of $5,000. It is almost impossible to comprehend that these kids of mine would not be here if not for good insurance. The treatment of infertility should NOT be considered an elective procedure. The choice to have children is hardly elective when it infertility is a real medical condition and we are acculturated with the construct of family as foundation from our earliest years.
Infertility is a painful experience. Having kids in this country is categorized in this country as similar as having cosmetic surgery: iot is considered an elective procedure.
We need insurance coverage for this reason alone even though it has been documented that insurance cost WILL NOT go up if coverage for ivf/infertility is provided
I"ts important that couples that wnat children have the same Ins support that we that can have children are entitled to. Welfare supports the many poor little children that are born into families that have and not want them!!!
Insurance providers and company benefit depts should do their research. Infertility/IVF coverage would NOT raise insurance costs. It may very well lower costs, as the prevalence of multiples needing intensive care would likely decrease.
I agree, children are not a convenience. Many people dream of having children and experiencing pregnancy but the cost of infertility prevents them the opportunity. Adoption is not an option for everyone.
Having children is not a convenience, it is something everyone should have the option to try. Adoption is not the only option and isn't as easy as everything thinks!
