Jetix UK have been recently showing episodes of the hugely successful Naruto anime series. At first, an anime fan would think that this is great news. However, Jetix have taken it upon themselves to make very poor quality edits to an already censored version of the show.




Main edits consist of:

-Zooms into the screen, which makes the picture low quality. Makes it hard for viewers to understand what is happening.

-Freeze Frames, which happen allot when a character is speaking, the speech and sound effects can still be heard but a still image is displayed on the screen. This makes the show look incredibly cheap. Makes it hard for viewers to understand what is happening.

-Thick black lines/blocks over the screen. Used to censor ninja weapons such as Kunai and Needles. Once again makes the show look low budget and cheap. Also makes it hard for viewers to understand what is happening.

-Screen skips. Jetix will skip straight to the next part of the scene. However, background music plays most of the time so the music will skip and this once again makes it obvious and makes the show look cheap. An example would be when two characters are charging at each other, ready to clash, but Jetix skipped to the scene where both characters were blown back from the clash, without the clash actually being shown. Can be difficult for viewers to understand what is happening. Makes the show look rushed and cheap.

-Scene cuts. Total scene is cut out. This could leave major plot holes or make the viewer feel uncontent with the show. Could make the show look cheap. An example of this is in episode one where the Hokage tells the ninjas that were looking for Naruto that it was fine and they could stop because there was nothing to fear for anymore. This whole scene was skipped.




One of the main elements of Naruto, and the genre that Naruto fits under, is conflict. In this case, violence and fighting. Editing this out defeats the purpose of the show and changes the experience of the story, not to mention the story itself.

The next thing I will touch upon is the timeslot - 8PM. There is no need for the show to be edited so much at this time. There are much more violent shows than Naruto on UK television at this time.

Many people have emailed Jetix with their concerns but Jetix replied with a fairly dismissive mass email which advises us that we should buy the DVDs.
This is not about us wanting to see the show. This is about us wanting the show to become successful in Britain.

Proof of its success lies in America and Japan. Naruto is most popular in Japan, where zero edits were made for the television broadcast. Second most popular would be America, where a fair amount of edits were made, Naruto is one of the most popular animated shows in America now.
This brings us to the solution that:
Cuts = loss in popularity
Now think about how popular Naruto will be in the UK when every kick and punch is edited out. It's not hard to work out that Naruto will fail in this country if Jetix continues this with butchered version. Keep in mind that the version Jetix are editing is an already edited version of the original (the version that was edited for the American broadcast). And it's not just the amount of edits Jetix makes; it's the quality of the edits that annoys most fans. It makes the show look cheap and low budget.
