North Carolina Infertility Insurance Mandate

Created by Cynthia Repanshek on 27 May 2006 @ 12:24:52 AM

We, the undersigned, are requesting the State of North Carolina to enact an infertility insurance mandate. Currently, 15 states in the U.S. are required to offer or treat infertility. These mandates were designed to make conception more affordable (and less emotionally draining) to the 1 of 6 couples that struggle with the disorder. Studies in mandated states have shown that infertility mandates do not greatly increase premiums. In some respects, the mandate helps to save health care dollars. In non-mandated states, since women and men cannot afford more than one cycle, they may dangerously request to transfer more embryos than may be safe. As a result, they may become pregnant with multiples, increasing the cost of prenatal care, delivery, and neonatal intensive care. With multiples, women are usually required to be on bed rest, causing insurance companies and employers large losses. Furthermore, in mandated states, infertility treatments are more successful and less risky for the mother and child. Without the assistance of insurance to pay for treatments ranging from medications to IVF, many people will never experience the joy of pregnancy, childbirth, or watching their child grow. Current legislation deems pregnancy and childbirth as "unnecessary" and "optional". Without children, there is no future and by denying infertility treatment, you are robbing millions of people from a future full of laughter, happiness, and potential.

46Beth RiveraI am a teacher, and also an infertility patient. Every day I work with children--yet my insurance will not pay for me to have my own children. There\'s no excuse for it!
45April McTaggartMy husband and I cannot afford to have our own child unless insurance companies are required to cover IVF.

40Autumn WatsonI am 23 years old and my husband and I have been trying to conceive for over a year. We have lost one baby to a first trimester loss and all of our testing that we could afford out of pocket has come back normal. There are better tests and tests for why we lost our baby but we cannot afford them. These tests could help us to prevent from losing another one but our insurance company doesn't cover anything fertility or infertility related. Please help us.

30autumn watsonmy husband and I desperately want to have a child and have had a miscarriage since we started trying over a year ago. We need genetic testing to determine that cause of the miscarriage and are undergoing some fertility meds now. The doctors have said that I could have repeat miscarriages costing my insurance and employer thousands of dollars in hospital bills and time from work unless we can find and prevent the cause... which can only be done by testing that we cannot afford because the insurance we already pay and arm and a leg for will not cover testing because it's considered fertility treatment.
29Alyssa AndersonAs a woman who can become pregnant, but faces repeat miscarriages I am imposing a greater health risk on my policy without the use of ART or IVF because of the chances of harm to myself or giving birth to a child with severe medical issues.

27IvonneWe are already dealing with infertility stress. The insurance that we are paying for won't even help us. I don't understand, insurance companies will pay for numerous cosmetic surgeries but we have a health condition that we did not cause and it won't even give us a chance. I have spent numerous thousands of dollars for treatment s and my insurance won't even pay for my condition. I am paying for someone else's problems. We should not even have to be begging for help. We pay insurance and it should be 100%covered too. I think we are being discriminated against and I won't stop until we get treated fairly.
26Ann GrantWe pay for insurance, our insurance should provide coverage for us! thank you!
25Brandy SigmanI suffer from infertility and can't afford invitro. Maybe something like this could make it possible for me and many others.
24Leigh BlackstockSupported.
23Laurie A. PittmanI suffer with infertility issues and I cannot affort IVF treatments. Insurance coverage would help tremendously.
22Latifa DerasmoI am affected by infertility and wish my insurance coverd some treatment
