There's a reason why the majority of gaming blogs and news sites are reporting this name in a negative light; there is a reason why the majority of gamers that have heard of this new name have responded negatively.
Personally, I strongly dislike the name because it handicaps the desirability of owning the console to more casual players.

Dear Nintendo,
I have been a fan of your company’s products for many years now. In fact to my knowledge the NES controller with the first game controller I ever touched. I have been hooked on Nintendo games ever since. I am a fan plane and simple. As fan I do have concerns about Nintendo’s branding in the public eye. Sadly I have to write to object to the official name of Nintendo revolution… “Wii”…. What? “Wii”… its not a word that excites me in the least…
Press and fans alike are up in arms about this name, “Wii”. Its premise may be a good idea but it just sounds so, so wrong. For one the letter “W” right now is not a positive in the US right now. It’s too overly associated with America’s least popular President ever! Sounds French too… I’m not joking… some people are turned off by the association with the French! (as sad as that maybe.) I’ve seen it happen! The only place the name might help with is France. As it sound like the French word for “yes”. More importantly for the English speaking consumers, like my self, it sounds like wee which is a slang term for urine. Just too many negative associations…
Why not bring back the NES name? The copy right is still there for Nintendo to use! It’s familiar among the general public and brings back nothing but good memories for those who played it the original! Just think about it! Maybe NES is not an option because it’s been used before. Well this is the fifth Nintendo home console so maybe “V-NES” would work. “V” for five or “V” for victory, come on it’s a great name! Its clean simple, nowhere near as aggressive as “revolution” and it is very familiar to consumers! Regardless I will buy the system… I am convinced the traditional controllers will feel archaic in comparison to the remote. It’s a bold and new idea that looks really different and people do not react well if they feel it might just be a silly pun of a system and controller.

Revolution was a pretty good name, but "Wii" is the crapiest name possible. I will never buy something that sounds so gay as "Wii". Nintendo won't stand a chance if they keep this stupid name.

I've been playing Nintendo games since the NES. I play more Nintendo games than any other platform. I HATE this name. Revolution was, in my mind, perfectly appropriate to what the system offered and also (to me) one of the best console names ever. This name is ASKING to be made fun of by everyone, and is very hard to make any practical use of. Madden Revolution, will now be Madden Wii, etc. It just does'nt work any way you try to rationalise it! I can tell you this, "We", as in people, was NOT the first thing that came to my mind, and I'm posative I'm not alone. I WANT REVOLUTION BACK. Or I'm not buying! Call Nintendo, complain, this is absolutely HORRIBLE! And I though XBOX and PSP sounded dumb!
