WTF would be a better name than "Wii." And, did some crackpot come up with this? My God, Revolution sounded cool as hell, AND symbolized what you were after. Nintendo's marketing guys have done the company a great disservce.
Not only do I support this petition, but I think that once you pick a name for a product that has such a profound impact on the target market and that symbolizes everything about your product, you don't get to change it again. This generation of consoles seems to have had the longest developement time ever, and most certainly, the public has been aware and knowledgeable about the upcoming systems longer this time than in cycles past. Why, then, has Nintendo decided that the code-name has to be just that? We, as consumers, have become comfortable with the name "revolution" and that's exactly what they system has been pegged as: a revolution. It's the expected revolution that I had hoped to buy the system. The name "wii" certainly signifies the inclusion of all people, gamers and non-gamers alike. The name "Wii" however still invokes a singularly childish image. It's been Nintendo's bane and it's what they've been trying to shy away from with titles like Resident Evil 4. If you want a system that's not just for kids, you can't just market it to kids and a name like "Wii" isn't something I want to stand up and shout from the rooftops. The "Revolution" holds symbolic power. It's just as inclusive: we all want to be part of the revolution, the wave of what's to come and the solution to our gaming woes. "Revolition" is an event and something we can rally around. It's strong, forceful, and exactly what Nintendo needs. Abandon Wii if only for the sake of your consumers. There is nothing to say that you cannot admit you made a mistake. What works for the Japanese market does not necessarially work everywhere and I should hope, by this point, nintendo would have realized that. Show them up with your games, your brilliant controller, and your market in
I have been looking forward to this console for over a year now, and I think I just vomited a little bit in my mouth. Just terrible; why didn't anyone in marketing have the guts to say "This is terrible"?
The name is quite unsettling. It may be Nintendo's aim to be disruptive, but if this is the best that comes from a year's worth of pondering...I whole-heartedly support this petition.
I understand what nintendo is going for, but this is a name that works only in theory.
It's like first showing the GC off as purple. Nintendo execs, don't make your job harder. Tell Japan you're going with something else.
Please change this terrible name. Revolution was great. I'd like you to go back to that, but even if you don't, PLEASE CHANGE WII. It is obscure, weak and will give Nintendo-hatere endless opportunity for crude jokes. Revolution forever!
I support this petition. This new name is a neat idea and all, but down the line it's just bad. And it's too late to change the name anyway.
I support this petition.
I don't feel strong hatred for the name 'Wii,' but I think it would be better for all concerned if the name remained 'Revolution.' If you don't change it back, your PR will take a major hit.
i think nintendo doesn't want to be in the market any more, they are not interested, that's why they don't care what name the new console will have. Nice move NINTENDO!!!
You did it well.
Wii 'll see you in hell.
A name that sounds like the cry of a toddler on a swing AND a term for human waste?
No thanks.
Also, for a system that's supposed to be easy for anyone to understand, the name certainly isn't.
W(E) want the Revolution back.
You people are so immature.
Wii has a clever background.
Everyone thought the same thing about the controller, and now it's loved.
just let it grow on you.
tal ves yo no sepa ablar en ingles pero alguien que lo lea lo podra traducir.pero nintendo piensa realmente quieres llamar la atemcion a los fans de nintendo con ese nombre, piensalo.
What? Wii? What are you guys thinking?
I love all of the ideas behind the Revolution, and want to buy one, but... honestly. Honestly.
I still can't believe this. What's going on with your marketing team, Nintendo?
Seriously, they might as well just pack up their things and sell the buildings. 'Wii'? That's a terrible name, possibly one of the worst I've ever heard. Do they not understand what they've just done for the systems future?
Nintendo has stated that the name was chosen both to represent the system's focus and uniqueness as well as to serve as a universal icon for the system. Neither will work.
First, unless it's spoken, people will probably read it as "why". And once they know how it's supposed to be said, they'll find it hard to incorporate into conversation. Can you see yourself going up to someone and saying "Did you see Wii?" or "What were you doing last night, playing Wii?". It's just not something that can gel with the common public. What parent is going to go up and ask for a "Wii"?
The focus of the system can clearly be seen to be community type experiences, and so online play and multiplayer will naturally be a part of it. Nintendo also, most likely, will unveil something to further establish that goal at E3. However, at the moment, seeing as I don't know what that revelation is, I'll have to say that this idea is just silly, not clever or catchy. Maybe the GameInfarcer parody of the future Nintendo controller with nothing but a "Do" button was on to something.
And then they go on to explain that the two 'i's represent either the controllers for the sytem or people playing together, and I think that's just stretching it way too far. Yes, I've seen the trailer where they unveil the name, and the 'i's playing around were fairly interesting, but I don't see that type of marketting going on for too long.
As for the uniqueness of the name, nintendo expressed its hope that it would become something of a lecxicon
why are you so angry?
Imagine the grate games comming with "wii"
Mario wii
Mario Kart Wii
Zelda Wii
Metroid Wii
Smash bros Wii-Ners
Wii pee!!!!!!
Wii Wii
Don't you like it?? hahaha IT's SUCKS nintendo, wii SUCKS, leave it like that and you will bee doomed.
Nintendo, please don't do this. I can't bear to hear the new Revolution name spoken or to see it in print. It makes me confused and sad. I support this petition.
I support this petition. Seriously, did you guys at Nintendo do ANY North American focus groups on this? You're in for nothing but urine and penis jokes with this...
COME ONNNNNNN
nintendo
LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS AT LEAST ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!
wii???????
are you kidding me?
You say that wii is right because every market can pronounce it right??? ARE YOU STUPID? WII "as in we" dont get pronounced like this in almost whole europe and south america... They would pronounce it like "VEE" with a V!
sheesh!
Ridiculous
Yeah, the name will bring people together.. the whole family can sit around and make fun of the name together. "Hey, want to play with my Wii?" Horrible.
