On June 12, 2009, all remaining television stations across the nation will turn off their annalog* signals, and continue broadcasting in digital only. This means changes for over-the-air TV viewers, who will gain access to more channels and clearer signals, but many of whom will also need new equipment to continue watching free TV.

Currently, New Mexico is the least prepared state for the digital transition. Also, as one of the poorest states in the country it is imperative that New Mexico residents are able to access a converter at no cost.

New Mexico Media Literacy Project, SouthWest Organizing Project, Community Cable Access Channel 27 along with other local community leaders, are concerned that low-income families, immigrants, elders, communities of color, and people with disabilities in our community will be the hardest hit by the DTV transition. Many will be unable to afford converter boxes costing even ten or twenty dollars over the $40 coupon provided by the US government.

As members of the national Media Action Grassroots Network (MAG-Net), a strategic alliance of regional grassroots media and cultural organizing groups, we are working with local retailers across the country to ensure a socially responsible transition, in which retailers provide their customers with a no-cost conversion option. As part of this effort, we would like Wal-Mart and other retailers to commit to offering at least one digital converter box, equipped with closed captioning and annalog* pass-through capabilities, for $40—the cost of the government coupon.

If you shop at Wal-Mart or other retailers and you care about a Socially Responsible Transition, let your local retailer know you want a No-Cost Box for the digital television transition.

This is very important. In MN, getting a No Cost Box has made a huge difference. EVERY state should have this option!
