To all who believe that Nielsen Media Research's method of obtaining TV viewership ratings/numbers is no longer (and possibly never was) accurate:

Cancellation of recent great shows (like Wonderfalls) have been based upon what I believe are false, poorly estimated numbers. And it is time for the networks to develop (on their own or working with their fellow networks) a new system for gathering more accurate numbers of the number of people who are actually watching their shows.

I cannot fathom that all of America is still enamored by this reality TV tripe. Sure, shows like the Apprentice stand out, but overall it's a quick solution get-the-numbers-for-the-dough game, without keeping a true loyal viewership. And the networks will actually LOSE money in the long-run, because where are the reapeat/sydication possibilites for results-based shows like American Idol, Average Joe? But they obviously don't see that now, and networks like FOX think one-shots like 'Swan' and 'Eden' are the answer to all their problems, while dumping shows that have potential life-spans of 5+ years.

With the way the Internet is ingrained into our society now, and the technological advances in the telephone (land-lines and cellular), there's no reason why there can't be a more accurate system.

The Neilson ratings are unfixably broken. It\'s time the networks moved to a new model for determining viewer interest.

When ECW was put on the SCI-FI channel TRUE sci-fi fans protested and by the message boards it clear that the ratings dont show a true viewing of the show.

Neilsen only further serves to pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Nielsens skew what people are actually watching. It is an archaic system. Use something higher-tech to actually track what people are interested in watching and spend the time so that your ad dollars are actually useful. Plus, then you won't cancel good shows for more reality trashavision...

This is exactly what I have been telling people. Plus beyond that, there is no way that major networks can get the same ratings as ten, twenty years ago as there are thousands of cable and satallite channels that steal viewers. Wonderfalls is a show that was never given a chance because of this highly inaccurate ratings system.

I completely agree with this. I do not think the Nielson's are an accurate system at all. Mostly, I think they try to measure audiences in the 18-49 age group. That excludes anyone who is below or above that standard which probably comprises a huge chunk of the viewing audience. It would also help if networks put more time and enery into producing well-written television series instead of stupid reality programs like, "Outback Jack."

It's all a matter of opinin... but if out of 200 people you take the 50 that hate something and determine the life of a show based on that it doesn't make sense. Epecially if the remaining 150 love the show. Nielsen: it's a waste of your time and $ because it's NOT ACURATE and it's pissing people off!

I agree. A new system ought to be created. I miss my Wonderfalls.

Amazing shows like Arrested Development are getting rubbed out by all these crap reality shows. Its really not a fair way to represent America's viewing habits .
