I have been flooded out three times in the last 18months. This house has been in my family for 80 years, and we only had two other floods in all that time we need effective river mgmt. Thank You Thomas Kern
There has been talk of a bus trip to DEP headquarters in NYC for a peaceful demonstration. Perhaps another to Albany. If anyone wants to organize this I would like to help.
Our business has been destroyed 3 times since Sept. 2004. Our home has been destroyed twice in the last 14 months. We will have to close the business and sell the property- if we can. The Reservoirs have only dipped below 40% one time in the last 50 years. Why can't they be kept at 85% instead of 100+%? NYC can have its water and we can keep our homes and businesses. I have never seen anything like this. In 1996 we had four feet of snow melt with 3 inches of rain and the river never crested into the 100 year floodplain. Reservoirs don't cause flooding, we know that, but they certainly can help keep a flood from becoming devastating to the river towns.
September 2004 reservoir flood cause the river to enter my house and rise to 51" on the second floor... I live just four miles above Stockton NJ. Then on 30 March 2005 we had a natural flood and had 33 inches in the lower level... it went down about 6-7 feet... then the unnatural flood where it came back up from those damn guys at the gate switch of three reservoirs dumping water into the Delaware when they don't have a clue how to conduct the flow of their jobs. I hope they got rid of those fools. Anyway the river came up 18.5 feet and went onto my roof of my two story home. I am going to be trying to recover for years from their mistakes. Wake the hell up up there and do a job you should be doing. If you don't know what to do... hire a ten year old who could do a better job... at least a ten year old knows what happens in the Spring.
BASIC PHYSICS:water added to water results in more water not less:therefore attenuation is an excuse not an answer. For an answer see above BASIC PHYSICS.
It seems to me that in addition to provding NYC with drinking water, the NY DEP can mandate that the reservoirs be also used for floood mitigation purposes. The two objectives are not mutually exclusive.
All of the reservoirs were created by using land that previously absorbed heavy rainfall. When they are full, they absorb no rainfall and sent it all downriver.
Attention Delaware River Residents, Businesses, Municipalities and Property Owners
Enough is enough! Even though we are directly affected by the actions, or inaction, of the organizations or political bodies governing the operation of the Delaware River, none of them directly represent those of us that live and work along the river. Therefore, we have formed Delaware Riverside Conservancy, Inc. to protect our property and our rights. This Corporation was organized, and will be operated, exclusively for the following purposes: the protection, conservation, proper management and oversight of the Delaware River, including but not limited to environmental, health, safety, flood, flow, preservation, recreational and policy issues affecting the Delaware River. We are a non-profit organization for charitable, literary, scientific and educational purposes only. Our primary mission is to protect the Delaware River and the property in the immediate vicinity of the river from damage due to manmade flooding and pollution. We intend to accomplish our goals through public relations and, if necessary, litigation. As you may have heard, we were the core group that was instrumental in filing the Torts Claim Notice(s) against the City of New York for negligent operation of their reservoirs preceding and during the April flood. We are also investigating the reservoir operations at Rio, Prompton and Wallenpaupack. In addition, we are looking into filing motions concerning the recent release of fly ash into the river by PPLˇ¦s Martins Creek plant so that we can be sure that the river and our property are fully restored. Our voices will be heard.
If the April flooding of the Delaware River or the pollution caused by fly ash has in any way adversely affected you or your organization and you would like to become a member of the DRC, or if you just want further information, please fill out the form below and return it to:
