No Africentric School At Oakwood C.I.
Published March 27, 2011
*** An Afrocentric school is a school black-focused school. It still means anyone can attend. It is optional. ***
As you may have read or heard, The TDSB wants Oakwood Collegiate open this fall as an Africentric high school. As students we have a say of what's going on at our school. We never get asked about OUR opinion of what happens in our community. This is our time to speak up for what we believe is right.
Oakwood has been a successful MULTICULTURAL school for 100 years, so why change it now? This is a public school and anyone of any race is allowed to attend without any "special treatment". What the TDSB is suggesting is absolutely outrageous. What they're suggesting will only segregate OUR COMMUNITY. We are DIVERSE. We live in Toronto for a reason.
The TDSB is forgetting about the social aspect of school. Students are not only hear to learn but to interact with each other. It's not all about academic intelligence, we are also learning social skills. What is the TDSB trying to teach us by separating the student body? To segregate our community based on our ethnicity? Why are they focusing so hard on "africentric" schools? What is the message they are trying to send? What about other ethnic groups? Should they also suggest an All-Asian school? All-hispanic school? All-caucasian school? They're called PUBLIC SCHOOLS for a reason. We treat EVERY student of any ethnicity; any race; any gender; any religions; any beliefs the SAME way.
Just think about it. Are they saying that we need a special school for certain types of people to succeed? What is the purpose of this school? The TDSB sugar coats everything and makes everything sound like its no big deal. The TDSB sketchy and shady, there was absolutely NO student, parent or teacher consultation on this issue.
What positives are coming from this situation? How does this help our community? How does it make you feel when they don't think our students can pass on their own?
We are in a multi-cultural society. WE WANT EQUALITY. Every is to be treated in the same fashion. We want our school to be focused on every single ethnicity, we want it to be focused on US.
I thought we were trying to make a STEP FORWARD in society. How does this help? They are discriminating. This is social engineering. The TDSB can't manipulate us. We aren't lab rats. They can't just try a new thing and see if it backfires, which it clearly will. It will only further segregate our community and our society.
We need to realize what the real problem is. The TDSB needs to stop trying to change our community make-up.
Martin Luther King taught us to BREAK DOWN BARRIERS. Not put barriers up. The TDSB is putting a barrier in our school.
WE NEED TO ALL SPEAK UP ON THIS INEQUALITY AND SEGREGATION.
WE LOVE OAKWOOD. WE DON'T WANT CHANGE. DON'T FIX WHAT ISN'T BROKEN.
