OpenGL is the standard. DirectX sux, Microsoft too ... I'm a software developer and it would be really outstanding if you keep supporting professional software for high end systems with non-windows machines. Linux and UNIX are the future. Microsoft is dead
If this stays, and if it succeeds in killing OpenGL for Windows, it will only mean less companies that produce 3D software will support Mac and Linux. As an OpenGL programmer myself, I would like to be able to support Windows with the programs that I write. If this happens, it looks like any programs I write will be Mac and Linux only. Not to mention the fact that as an open standard, OpenGL has more room to grow and is more possible to support on future platforms.
Treating a well known, established, modern, versatile and cross-platform API like OpenGL this way is a shame! This "approach" of Microsoft is just one more example of their attempts in trying to over-rule open standards for nothing more but political reasons, which lack any technical backing.
I'm a free software enthousiast who will keep propriatary softwares out of his hard drives. Even if I can't use 3D anymore, although I won't let it go away that easy.
I stoped buying hardware that is compatible a long time ago !
I never bought a single software (only when I couldn't avoid it along with hardware).
I just use, test, repport bugs and install free software on demand.
Free your computers!
Im an OpenGL developer and I just love it. Having one company, any, controlling the only standard to render with hardware acceleration is definetly bad for everyone. We cant let OpenGL die, like many other projects that have "interfeared" with the evil empire
I don't quite understand what they think theiy're doing. We develop quad-buffer stereo software, and here DirectX simply is not an option. Do they want to put us out of business? Looks like it's high time to intensify work on the Linux port...
I want GL support to be excellent. GL will work fine on Vista, but I hear that the desktop compositing effect will be turned off. MS should cooperate to get this resolved before Vista is released.
