The charm of Blacksburg will be lost in big business...if people need goods of that sort, they can travel right down the road to Christiansburg. Please don't ruin this town with a Wal-mart, Target, or store of such sort!!!
There is a Walmart within 15 minutes of anyone that lives in Blacksburg. Building one here would spell doom for all local stores, putting both locals and students out of jobs. There's no reason to build one in such a little town
One of the main things I like about Blacksburg is that it's not like Christiansburg. Let's keep our town the way it is. If we need big box stores, they're not far down the road.
When I visit areas with stores and restaurants that can be in "Any Mall, USA" (high end/upscale or not), I'm thankful for B'burg and can't wait to return home.
Low prices come at a high cost. An honest labor, an act of creation is more valuable than the hum of florescent safety and availability. Lets take a chance.
I strongly support the proposed ordiance 1450. Big box stores will hurt local businesses, significantly increase traffic congestion, and harm long-term development by making Blacksburg just another generic town to buy generic stuff. Hold on to Blacksburg's unique quality of life.
Box store(s) would detract from the charm, tranquility and character of Blacksburg. There are plenty of them 5 min away. It's an exceptionally bad idea.
The proposal to bring in a big-box store will disenfranchise many members of the Blacksburg community by blocking footways, cycleways and bus access for those who cannot or wish not to drive.
With real estate values already so high in Blacksburg, taking up so much space with a supercenter would only hurt the financial stability and buying power of the current residents and current students.
Blacksburg already has a Wal-Mart 10 minutes away in Christiansburg. A Wal-Mart in Blacksburg is completely unnecessary and would increase traffic and other undesireable developments.
Blacksburg does not need a Wal-Mart, or any other big-box store. The increase in traffic and decrease in other lifestyle factors are serious considerations that cannot be overlooked. Blacksburg is a wonderful and special place because of what it "is" as well as what it "is not." Blacksburg should learn from its neighbor and not start down the path of becoming "Christiansburg II."
Walmart is notorious for destroying small businesses and communities. Please do not allow this to happen in Blacksburg, when there are so many major large retailers in Christiansburg.
If you want to go to Wal-Mart-go to Christiansburg--5 MINUTES AWAY!!!!The traffic in Blacksburg is already out of control-with a Wal-mart things can only go downhill
quaint & unique are the defining characteristics of our town.
there is an opportunity for the town to establish two unique "town hubs": the college theme hub on n.main with sandwhich shops/bars & collegiate wares; the town theme hub on s.main with upscale restaurants/boutiques & a centralized pedestrian mall.
as for the updated plan along country club dr: let's also not put the "backsides" of these bldgs facing the road through a thin veil of trees. it is, after all, a main cooridore for both residential and athletic traffic--is that what we want to show our residents & visitors ?
