The idea that we need a Wal-Mart in Blacksburg is ridiculous. There is a Wal-Mart less than 10 minutes away. Why put in another? Do we really need to cut a couple minutes off our shopping trip at the expense of the trees, the wildlife, and the Rugby field? Yes, some of us still use that field!
This is preposterous, to build such an ugly store in Blacksburg. We already have some ugly strip mall-esque areas on South Main and on University City Blvd., and they are already dreary and depressing to see. We have one Wal-Mart in the general vicinity, and that is all we shall ever need. Blacksburg is known for its pleasant woodlands and beautiful college campus, and needs no more than that. We can already drive out to get what we need at that large retail store, and we don't need anything more in this area.
Bring Wal-Mart to town only if you wish to see Main Street shrivel up and die! That, or be nothing but bars and pubs - the only thing Wal-Mart can't seem to provide... yet anyways. Let's be sensible, Blacksburg. NO WAL-MART!
uh...is this just a precautionary thing or something? or are they really gonna build one? well in any case, there is kinda already one in christiansburg. it's really not necessary for a wal mart to be in blacksburg then, and besides, i am pretty sure it wouldn't be a smart move economically for wal mart. but then again, i dont really know what im talking about....
There is no reason to place a Wal*Mart in Blacksburg, because there is one in Christiansburg, which is not far away at all. The area should be used to promote business and Blacksburg's economy by building stores that will be useful to all ages, including the huge amount of Virginia Tech students.
Absolutely not. Blacksburg thrives on small businesses. Wal-Mart would be able to undercut those businessmen’s’ prices and eventually run the small businesses into the ground. This past year there has a movement to encourage growth in Blacksburg. I feel allowing Wal-Mart to take root in Blacksburg would endanger any progress that has already been made or would be made.
I don't even live here anymore and I still hate the idea of the behemoth Walmart eating Blacksburg's beautiful trees and mountains. Please, think of the trees, and all the hippies that live in them.
We don't want a stupid Wallyworld in Blacksburg. It's a college town with it's own personality. Walmart would ruin it and make us just like every other small town in America Walmart has moved into and ruined!!!
Samuel Greene said all that needed to be said "I have traveled all over the United States andmany other places in the world. What disheartensme the most is every town in this country I see isthe same, with slightly different juxtapositions. My heart feels good when I return to MY HOME HEREand it is NOT LIKE EVERYWHERE ELSE. I supportproposal 1450 and strongly feel the public needsand deserves the right to review and comment onlarge scale developments that would drasticallyalter the quality of life for the residents here.I believe this towns charisma is why most of uslive here to begin with. I would guess this alsoholds true for the members of the planningcommission?? Why not make intelligent, not rushed, decisions about development. With careful planningwe can make Blacksburg the MODEL which othercommunities look up to, SETTING the standards andnot succumbing to the mundane, common, and massedproduced. Together we can make Blacksburg theleader in community feel unlike the rest of ourdisjointed society. Please consider this."

We have a Walmart in Christiansburg. Yes, a Walmart would bring more jobs...but they would destroy many full-time jobs in the process. Blacksburg's downtown would become a strip of "for lease" signs even more than it is now.
Walmart would rely on part time jobbers- mostly college students, it would run out the small businesses that make Blacksburg what it is. Once those small businesses are gone the economy in town would be only Walmart- so then what would happen when summer starts? How would Blacksburg economy be and would tax breaks be given to Walmart? If so eventually tax breaks will have to be given to small businesses to help them along so what is the point?
From my understanding there is an interactive entertainment center being built on that land, not a Walmart. I do not support a Walmart, we have one 5 miles away.
It seems that the town had designs to promote small business within the downtown area, hence Kent Square. There is only ~50% occupancy now, a big box store will drive that rate towards 0%
There's no point in installing a Wal Mart in our town while there is one a very short distance away in Christiansburg. These big box stores won't allow our dowtown to keep thriving.
Why put up a WalMart in Blacksburg when there is one ten minutes away. Blacksburg is designed with a small town feel in mind. The big businesses will ruin local shops and destroy the feel of our great town.
