A Walmart should not be built in Blacksburg because it would negatively affect local businesses and create less jobs with lower pay. Has anyone compared hourly wages and benefit packages of local grocery stores to those of Walmart? It is unbelievable how badly they treat their employees and surrounding communities. This should motivate all of us to boycott Walmart for LIFE!!!
I have a son who is just beginning his schooling career at Beeks. The entire development proposal is an affront to the integrity of the neighborhood and was overwhelmingly unwanted in the first place by residents in the area. The latest "big box" potential simply further alienates the neighboring residents even more, and aggravates a sore situation even more.
Walmart would provide a disincentive for use of the downtown area. This would increase local reliance on cars, at the expense of local housing, biking, and mass transit.
AS AN ARCHITECT, I FIND THE OLD BAIT AND SWITCH A FAIRLY COMMON TACTIC IN PRESENTING DEVELPOMENT PROPOSALS. I DO NOT SUPPORT THE PROPOSED PLAN-KEEP ON TOP OF THIS. A NEW WAL-MART PROPOSAL WAS JUST RECENTLY DENIED IN OGDEN, NC(WILMINGTON AREA). PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IS ESSENTIAL AND IT CAN WORK.
Blacksburg does not need a Wal-Mart. The last thing we need is that enormous corporation coming in to our town and sending all of the locally owned and operated businesses out. It's just like everyone else has said: if people want to shop at Wal-Mart, there is one in Christiansburg, and one in Radford as well. "53% of the U.S. population live within 5 miles of a Wal-Mart. 90% live within 15 miles of one, 97% live within 25 miles of a Wal-Mart." (Charles Fishman, 'The Wal-Mart Effect,' p.213) Please keep Blacksburg free of this overbearing monstrosity. Contact me for more information: kwilmsm@vt.edu
There is no need to have another Walmart when there's one in Christiansburg. We have enough resources to feed, clothe, provide services, etc. for everyone in the area with just the one Walmart in Christiansburg. Having a Walmart in Blacksburg will be ruining the small town nostalgia of Blacksburg.
I'm opposed to Walmarts opening anywhere that there is opposition to them. The harm they cause to the environment and to local businesses is not worth the low prices they bring. The part-time employment the offer is not a solution to any community's needs. And the harm they cause to business that manage to survive their spread is the final nail in the coffin. No way Walmart should be in Blacksburg.
Placing a Wal-mart or other large retail building in Blacksburg is superfluous and unnecessary when there is another one 10 minutes away. In addition, large businesses hurt fragile retail districts like Blacksburg and could damage the town's economy.
Blacksburg is too small of a town to support the several tractor-trailers that would be adding to the congestion of the area. In addition, these trucks would substantially increase the amount of exhaust emissions of Blacksburg, making it a much unhealthier place to live.
I don't see why we need to have another Walmart!!! There's already one in Christiansburg. Are people so lazy that they can't drive to C-burg? Why do people want to make B-burg a city? We are ruining our wonderful Blacksburg people! When is enough enough?
Bringing "Big box stores" to this area will significantly hurt the small town quality of Blacksburg, consequently eliminating a quality which attracts many residents, student or not.
blacksburg def does not need a walmart! walmarts are big, and crazy, and there's one ten minutes away, what's the need for two?
fight the right.
people before profit.
Beyond the obvious effects on the local economy, pushing such a nuance on the town of Blacksburg would be detrimental to the culture of the area. Is convenience worth the sacrifice we would be making to ourselves and the small town college atmosphere that very few schools retain?
Christainsburg is not that far, I will drive 10minutes.Blacksburg does not need more growing other than the New Football Stadium. Lets look at what we really need, not what we want.
Please listen the petitioning voices of those who live or grew up in Blacksburg. Walmart would take away from the charm of this town that makes it unique from the surrounding cities.
Blacksburg has no need for a Wal-mart especially with Christiansburg so close. It would also greatly harm the local businesses that help make blacksburg what it is.
Christiansburg is plenty close enough. We even have the Huckleberry Trail that goes basically straight to it from Blacksburg. Local businesses get enough competition from Chburg.
There's a Walmart in Christiansburg already. If there was a Walmart here, I wouldn't go to it. Sams Club, a Walmart subsidiary, also shouldn't be allowed to build in Blacksburg.
With a Walmart already located in Chistiansburg it is obvious there is no need for one in Blacksburg, and the only purpopse of a new Walmart would be to drive small business out.
