How can ANY developer get away with proposals such as this? If the original premise on which ANY decision has been put forth has changed such as this, then the process should begin all over again and all parties should be extremely suspicious of the intentions of that developer. Too many times have we accepted one idea, only to end up with a completely different animal when it is all done. Why do we not review, strictly, the progress and end result on all projects to see that the intended project is what is eventually presented to the public as it is advetised at the many and tedious meetings that neighbors spent valuable time attending to protect the desires of the community? I stongly oppose any retailer that has demonstrated in meny past projects to develop a 'throw away' attitude towards the community and that has been allowed to destroy any property let alone to overwhelm the economy of that area. Much like being in business, having only one large client opens you up to the possibility that the one client leaves and you are 'out of business'. Balance in everything is of utmost importance.
For real guys....What makes blacksburg is having the cow fields that come halfway into town....playing highschool sports with cowfields right next to us....walmart does not belong here.
Building a wallmart will add congestion to our roads that right now we only have to deal with on game day and the local business support our town just fine.
What in the world are these people thinking?? It takes 10 minutes to drive to Christiansburg. THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANOTHER WAL-MART, especially in the already filled to the brim town of Blacksburg.
This is ridiculous, there is no need for a Wal-Mart in Blacksburg, keep your dirty, polluting sprawl out of our town, VT wont stand for you to ruin Blacksburg
the City of Blacksburg and Virginia Tech have a chance here to show that we can make this work without the big box retailers. Let's show them what the alternative is like, keep walmart out! Keep sprawl out! This business model is only a temporary relief and will not grow our economy sustainably.
Wal-Mart is ruining small town America. Although they are beginning to take small steps towards being a more 'green' enterprise, they are far behind where they should stand. This ordinance gives the town and more importantly the residents the ability to use smart-growth techniques and control the future landscape and character of such a unique special place as Blacksburg. Find a way to get to the Wal-Mart in Christiansburg because there is no need for one in Blacksburg.
Are people really so lazy that they cannot drive the ten minutes to Christiansburg to interact with their impersonal super retail monster? WE DO NOT NEED OR WANT ANOTHER WAL-MART! Let's keep Blacksburg's small businesses healthy and thriving. Not only do they add to Blacksburg's great atmosphere, but they also offer a greater variety of goods than Wal-Mart could ever provide.
Wal-mart would not be an addition to Blacksburg, but a detraction! Please consider how they built the first store in Christiansburg, then left it vacant to build another, bigger store across the street. The shopping center where the first store was has struggled and been an eyesore ever since. I don't believe them to be a responsible part of a community.
I absolutely love Blacksburg because it is original and unique . We have access to all we need within our town limits already and if we ever find ourselves looking for a big "box-store" we have one in Christiansburg 10 minutes away.... what is the need for another are we that lazy???? Use the land for something useful, another park, or recreation area. Please.
Part of the reason I love Blacksburg is because the old town feel and small shops. The Christiansburg Walmart is close enough, especially since the BT goes straight there. There is absolutely no need, or desire, for a Walmart within Blacksburg.
The character of Blacksburg would be diminished significantly by following the nation wide trend of large scale chain construction. Part of the reason that I have enjoyed my experience in Blacksburg is because it has a small town feel. I don't want future generations of students to miss out.
There is a giant Wal-mart 5 minutes down the road. Part of what attracts people to VT is the small town feel of Blacksburg. Over the past four years thatI have been here, that small town feel has seen a great decline. Let's not demolish that by adding unneeded Walmarts! C-burg isn't that far away!
Given how close and accessible the other walmart is to people in Blacksburg, I can not see how the majority of us can agree to having another one here, with all the negatives that it brings.
I suggest that the names of local officials who are making this decision be made public.
It would be a negative impact on the character of Blacksburg. Blacksburg over the last 10 years has become an eclectic town with some wonderful shops. Wal-Mart is notorious for putting these locations out of business in other towns. There is no just reason for Wal-Mart to come to Blacksburg since there is a store less than 5 miles away from the proposed site. Also has anyone thought of what is going to happen to the Kroger located next to the proposed site?
I grew up in those woods, and judging by size limitations, I really dont think that its safe to have a parking lot right next to a play ground. Also, it will wipe out all small business in the area, our daily bread, kroger, everything in gables, gone. (including my job) please stop this box and save small business
I grew up in this community and left for school. When I came back I did not recognize the area, the individuals were rude and the local businesses were gone. This was all due to "Big Business" Let's perserve what is left of our rural community.
One thing I love about Blacksburg is that its not crazy-developed like Northern Virginia where I came from. This move to build a Wal-Mart here is a despicable, dastardly, and greedy attempt to ruin this small town's individuality.
It is an absolute waste to build another WalMart when not one, but two are so close. Blacksburg has a great community and the small town charm, don't ruin it with walmart!
