I only live in Blacksburg part of the year to go to college, but I love it here! It's quiet, beautiful, and so unlike my hometown or any other town for that matter! We don't need a Wal-Mart! People can drive ten minutes down main street, into Christiansburg and be at Wal-Mart, we don't need another one!
We have a Wal-Mart ten minutes away, tops. Why do we need one in Blacksburg? Are we -trying- to put our local shops and other stores (like Kroger) out of business?
Don't support this nonsense.
The rest of that retail development in the pictures above actually looks pretty nice, like what they did with Pullman Square in Huntington WV, or a miniature version of Easton Mall in Columbus OH. That stretch of Blacksburg along South Main is severely blighted and needs to be improved.
So I don't understand why they think dropping a Wal-Mart behind that would improve things. Wal-Mart would do nothing but white-trash up what could be a really classy shopping area.
If we -have- to have a big box store, could we at least get a Best Buy or Circuit City? It's no fun driving to Roanoke just for that, and college kids with disposal income for gadgets would be a gold mine.
Every time I talk to someone who has just visited Blacksburg for the first time always says how different it is than what they thought. Its a small town, but is a great place for college kids and local residents to live. Blacksburg is an amazing and unique town that needs to maintain its character without Wal-Mart. Don't be lazy, make the 8 minute drive to Christiansburg.
There is no valid reason that Blacksburg would need a Walmart with Christiansburg having one less than 10 miles away. Please don't mar the beauty of this town by allowing this monstrosity to be built in our neighborhood.
Blacksburg is a small town and it should continue to be, christiansburg is a few miles away, We do not need to cut down more trees and create more trouble for other stores present in Blacksburg.
Big box stores of any kind threaten the character of Blacksburg. A big box store at the proposed location would cause far too much traffic for that location.
Blacksburg needs more locally owned businesses...and a big-box retailer is totally unnecessary, seeing as how there are plenty right next door in C'burg.
proper wildlife compensation/mitigation will probably not take place resulting in a large loss of habitat. All for a store that is unneeded. There are already two kroger's and two food lion's in town we don't need a walmart.
The last thing Blacksburg needs is a monstrous Wal-Mart destroying the small town environment that makes the town what it is. Residents don't want it; so, they won't shop there. The revitalization of South Main has such potential. Why kill it by allowing Wal-Mart to move in?
I strongly support Ordinance 1450. I care a great deal about keeping our small-town flavor, and feel this proposal is very inappropriate on numerous fronts.
I'm proud to be a blacksburg townie and we don't need a wal-mart. VT provides bookstores that take care of basic student needs not met by a CVS or a kroger. A wal-mart in blacksburg would mess up christiansburg's economey...they ca n't survive without our buissness as well.
WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER WALMART!!! Who cares if one is a couple miles away, and there is a bus route to boot--that's close enough. All Walmarts end up doing is hurting all of the other local businesses. Things aren't broke, don't try to fix it.
This Walmart wouldn't be any more convenient than the one in Christiansburg. It would take just as long to get to a Wal-Mart on the already congested Main St.
Christiansburg allows such stores and has reliable public transit between such stores and the Blacksburg area. There is absolutely no need to infringe on our town's current way of life by building repeat stores overtop of local businesses. This is happened before; watch southpark :D
I'm in third grade and I can see this is a really bad idea. Don't build it. If you build it, it will be disgrace to our town. -- Henry
dont build a walmart because it is bad for the environment and will hurt the squirellees.(I like squirellees and cheese)
Blacksburg does not need a walmart when we have one 10 minutes away in Christiansburg. Blacksburg is a town, a small town, and it deserves to remain that way. Just because there is a college here does not mean that Blacksburg needs to be industrialized. Please do not build a walmart in Blacksburg.
Any big box store coming to Blacksburg would have a large negative impact on this town. Furthermore, the retail chains most associated with big boxes are notorious for unfair trade and labor practices, bad customer service, and bullying communities to get their way. We should not stand for that.
Blacksburg is a special place precisely because it does not have big box retail but an actual community of residents, students, and (mainly) local business. The slow occupancy rate of the Kent Square development clearly demonstrates that Blacksburg does not need further retail capacity.
