I love the Character of Blacksburg now. Keep the big box stores out. I would like to see more small specialty stores so I don't have to go to Christiansburg for shopping.
pros : I won't need to drive 5 minutes to Christiansburg anymore, hurray... cons : more people, more traffic, less calm, death of small businesses etc...I just don't get it...
I used to live off of South Main street in Blacksburg. If this is true, it will kill traffic flow in that part of town. It is/was the last laid-back portion of Blacksburg. We could get to campus from our condo in 5 minutes or less anytime of year... even during student move-in and big football game days. I'm glad I moved :)
WalMart is not needed in Blacksburg! They have aldready accomplished what they set out to do: put all the small stores out of business! I hate WalMary and there trash!
Leave Blacksburg beautiful...a walmart is close enough to us! honestly, the walmart population is getting to be rediculous...and there are plenty of town stores that could use the business without a large corporation wiping everything out.
We already have Wal-mart conveniently close in Christiansburg. Also we already have plenty of grocery stores, a hardware store, clothes retailers, and an art supplies shop here in Blacksburg. For anything else, we only have to drive 5 minutes to Christiansburg.
We need a way for our elected representatiives to review and control undesirable development such as a big-box store in the middle of the south Blacksburg residentlal area. We need passage of Ordnance 1450.
Depending on citizens and Town Council to uphold the integrity of the community with planned development. This ordinance is where we draw the line. This one really counts.
Nothing like the threat of a Wal-Mart to get the blood flowing. But on a brighter note, what a great opportunity for a community to come together and continue to collectively shape their environment instead of passively watching big business shape it for them. This one is a no-brainer; awareness and action is the key to making this ordinance happen. Keep spreading the word!
Blacksburg is a beautiful place and a Walmart or a Home Depot will surely destroy the hometown atmosphere. Small business and local shops are what make Blacksburg stand out above the rest. It is a great place for entrepeneurs to start a craft, trade, or business and a giant like Wal-mart would lessen their chances of success. "Blacksburg - NOT open for BUSINESS."
They need community right now, not a Wal-mart.
Support local business, all this will cause is suffering upon individuals, and this is no neccessity to the mass. Use logic. there is no need to destroy something beautiful, large box stores spilling into town would eliminate the captivating atmosphere of blacksburg.... bad idea.
This will destroy the Blacksburg community we all love. There is no reason for a large box store here when there are plenty just 4 miles down the road. No No No!
The economic backlash of building a supercenter containing the collective diversity of nearly every shop in Blacksburg will be unprecedented in our little utopia. Can anyone with a basic understanding of our competitive economic system even consider approving this? Does our town council understand the repercussions? Capitalism is competition. Where is the competition inherent in the installation of such a dominating conglomerate? Blacksburg needs to nurture a healthy competitive environment for locally owned businesses or it will become another Christiansburg. Why not foster local growth in a centralized location? That way there would be an influx of the same customer base without leeching from our economy. This is ignorance.
College students already have a Wal-Mart in Christiansburg. Building one in Blacksburg is unnecessary and will only damage the town's reputation as having old-school charm. Besides, part of the appeal in having a Wal-Mart farther away is getting a group of friends together to go and have some fun for a few hours.
A super Wal-Mart is conveniently located in Christiansburg in an industrial shopping area.A large superstore is not in keeping with the character of Blacksburg's Main Street. Additionally, the people/motor traffic situation would be undesirable around the elementary school.
One might argue that Walmart will create more jobs for the locals and students in Blacksburg, but it will likely displace more jobs than it will create by forcing small mom
There is no way that a walmart can be good for Blacksburg. One of the greatest things about this town is that there are small locally owned businesses who actually care about the customers. A walmart would only soil the great town of Blacksburg and ruin the economy. Oh we already have a walmart near by in Christiansburg, and its still too close.
Blacksburg is a wonderful place and does not need a big ugly Wal-Mart. There is one eight miles down the road. Wal-mart is an awful company. Please keep it out of Blacksburg!
Another Walmart is neither necessary, nor appropriate for our town. It's policies are immoral and many of the products it offers were produced under deplorable conditions. The Walmart in Christiansburg is more than capable of providing any needed products not available through local businesses and it is very accessible to the Blacksburg community. Please support our local commerce. Please, let us keep our dignity and keep Walmart out of Blacksburg.
No need to put a Walmart in town. There are plenty of other options for shopping springing up in town that aren't eye sores. Help out the local shop owners that we've tried so hard to attract.
why would we, blacksburg, want or even need a walmart when we can get to one in christiansburg moments away? WHEN WILL WE HAVE PROPER ZONING LAWS? after this town turns in to an ugly, commercialized piece of sh*t??PLEASE, NO WALMART IN BLACKSBURG...not NOW not EVER!!why would you put one right behind an elementary school?what is WRONG with america???????
There was a shooting at a nearby Wal-Mart in February, 2006. Imagine the same event 200 yards from an Elementary School. The site and the town are wrong for big box.
we dibt need ANOTHER walmart we allreaddy have one in 20 min any direction you go and we really dont need one on top of a elementary school. we dont need the trafic right on top of kids ages 3-12
No big boxes. Also let's limit all access to Main St., and keep it off Country Club so it won't bring unnecessary traffic to the doorstep of the elementary school
A big box store on Country club drive would make the traffic on that relatively small street street very bad. It's the street that many kids take to go to M. Beeks Elementary and I think that it would be dangerous for the kids. If really there should be a store why not building it on S Main where the ugly pond is ?
The Wal-Mart in C-burg is not too far away for Blacksburg locals, and I don't want the landscape of the beautiful college town ruined by a massive parking lot and more traffic.
