I support this petition. There are too many Walmarts in such a small area already. The Christiansburg shopping area can support all the Blacksburg shoppers. Blacksburg is beautiful, we don't want big box stores to come any closer!

There is no need to place a Walmart in Blacksburg. It is only less than 15 miles away for the town and it is definitely better that way. We already have so much traffic during football and basketball seasons, and this would even more sprawl and hurt many small business that make Blacksburg a special place.

Wal-Mart is not necessary in a town such as Blacksburg. We are self-sufficient, with local businesses covering most of the needs of the residents. Just about everything else can be found in Christiansburg.

We do NOT need a Walmart with one so close by. Blacksburg cannot handle that amount of traffic nor eyesore it would cause.

If we calculated the distance between Christiansburg and Blacksburg, does it really deem necessary to build another Walmart? Laziness is an unfortunate characteristic that has become more and more prevalent in our society. Implementing a Walmart less than 20 miles from another (located in Christiansburg) is simply unnecessary and better supports this laziness. Convenience is no longer just a passing opportunity, it has become a staple of lifestyle. But does that extra mile really mean that it is any less convenient???? No thanks, I'll drive the extra mile.

While the proposed site in Blacksburg definitely begs for gentrification, this is not the way to do it. The reason why downtown is so special is because it is pedestrian-based. Some aspects of their plan do seem beneficial (ice cream shop, movie theater), but the existence of a wal-mart or any other big box retailer demands the use of cars as it draws in people from far away.... Think of downtown Blacksburg; does your vision include obscenely large parking lots?

This is a slipery slope to making Blacksburg into everywhere USA. Keep it quaint and with the diversity of locally owned businesses. Banish bundlers of Ann Taylor, Gold's Gym, etc. and big boxes to C'burg Junction.

I don't want any large box store so close to a school! Blacksburg is a small town that enjoys small stores and a sense of community. We don't need a Wal-Mart and we don't need a new Movie Theater! We already have those within 10 minutes! This is not NOVA :) We live here precisely for that reason :)
#2645

Jeff Roberson said 05/25/07, 8:09 am (verified)
Why would Blacksburg ever need a wal-mart. I am all for smaller stores and restaurants here. There is a Wal-mart just a few miles away. Are we Really that lazy?

Patrick Withem said 05/24/07, 8:37 pm (verified)
I think it is a good idea to have a check on large retail stores that could potentially damage local businesses / economy.

Jeff McGuire said 05/24/07, 7:53 pm (verified)
This would not only cripple small businesses, but also take away from blacksburg's small hometown feel. Also, all the shopping you need is less than 10 min away in christiansburg

It is entirely reasonable for the town to review such high-impact shopping developments as the ordinance concerns. Respectable developers should not be afraid of the kind of review the ordinance calls for.

Large box stores, Wal-Mart, already exists only about 5 miles from this site. This is a terrible location for a Wal-Mart for many other reasons. I'm not against development but please bring in something beneficial not another Wal-Mart!
