Vote NO to S. 1139. PAWS will not improve the welfare of dogs, cats and other pet animals. Congressmen who believe that their state has serious pet welfare problems should work with their state lawmakers to toughen state laws and to improve enforcement of existing laws to deal with those welfare problems.

#4298

Manuel Galvan said 10/22/05, 11:26 pm (verified)
Vote NO to S. 1139. S. 1139 is unnecessary and is nothing more than additional federal intervention. The current Animal Welfare Act should be enforced as written. The USDA’s responsibilities should not be expanded to an area already well covered by state laws and local ordinances. Hobby breeders should not be regulated by the USDA, nor should the USDA be responsible for interpreting the vague language of PAWS.

Vote NO to PAWS. This bill is the first step to doing away with the right of good responsible breeders being able to continue to breed their quality animals for both pets and show.

This bill violates our civil rights--another example of the federal govt's desire to control our every move. I object strongly to this bill, which is just the butting into our business by the government which is beyond intolerable. I'd be for a bill, though, to stop the killing of white boxer babies who are wonderful pets deaf or not. I do agree that they perhaps should not be bred, and should be neutered -- but there is no reason to kill them. I think the AKC should recognize their beauty and their value--they are a gift to the world.

Ending animal abuse is not the intent of this bill. It's bad legislation. If you really want to stop animal abuse, fund APHIS vets so they can attend the 600 gaited shows and stop soring once and for all. You have had over 30 years to stop it and haven't done it yet. Test for deadening agents on the forelegs and ban the use of those agents.

Don't give the USDA another rule. They can't or won't enforce the rules that they are already suppose to. They make rules and laws to their own liking. Look what they have done to the cattlemen in this country with the BSE situation. Vote NO. This law is not a good law. The USDA is not working for or protecting the USA. It has it's own adgenda, and that is not good for this country as a whole.

USDA should not be allowed to regulate what hobby breeders do. The laws are ther and responsible breeders through education to the public makes puppy mills stop. Buying from pet stores continues to prepetrate the continuation of puppy mills. How about harder laws for these people. Those of us the tsest and produce quality pets, show or breeding animals should be allowed to continue to do so, with out the governement taking more of our civil rights from us. NO NO NO to PAWS

I vote NO. This country is trying to control every function of our lives. There are so many dedicated folks who strive to do an excellent job of breeding animals to improve the breeds and to do away with health problems. Cost wise it is not even feasible to even be involved in breeding good quality animals except that they love what they are doing. I believe that the future of our pets and other animals are in good hands and the federal government needs to take care of the USA in feeding the hungry, helping the farmers, bring jobs back to this country and to stablize our future in the USA and only in the USA we are becoming a weak nation that is too involved in things like this that does not stop the bad folks that have puppy mill that supply pet stores across the country.

My husband and myself have been Farmers and Breeders of Cattle, Hogs, Sheep, Horses and Dogs for MANY,MANY years (40 +) for NO OTHER REASON than to continue the BEST of the bloodlines in EACH Species. In our untireing endeavor we were confronted with all of the U.S.D.A. GOVT. REQUIREMENTS we could indure while complying with ALL of them to be ALLOWED to farm our OWN LAND the way the USDA GOVT. ALLOWED us to. Since retireing from farming, and USDA GOVT. INTERVENTION we STILL, continue to STRIVE for raising and keeping the BEST Bloodlines possible for the continuance and IMPROVEMENT of the Breeds we have as PETS. I would rather MY TAX DOLLARS be used to further enhance and INSPECT,,, IMPORTED Meat and Agriculture Products from Foreign Countries to the same criteria, that WE have to in America in order to sell to OURSELVES. It is UN-ACCEPTABLE, out TRADE RELATIONS with other Countries. Why can other Countries use DDT and the like,,,, to produce agriculture products to ship to us IT'S ABSOLUTELY POISON!!! but we don't have the USDA agent numbers to inspect IMPORTS adaquately. MAYBE,just MAYBE 2 cans of IMPORTED meat in this country out of 100 are inspected intering this country. Think the USDA needs more inspectors??? You bet. Look it up. I think MY TAX DOLLARS would be better spent with the USDA GOVT. taking care of what it was meant to do when it was formed,, taking care of AMERICANS... The only way the American Public has to deal with the USDA Governments issues concerning the public is to ask that they either vote for or against a bill. We can STILL vote for or against that person can't we?

This will only hurt hobby breeders, 4h and ffa kids, and is horribly misguided in it's reasoning, it takes a very small amount of quality animals sold to hit the 500.00 threshhold, and my family will no longer be able to participate in an educational and enjoyable hobby that promotes a lot of positive experiences for children and adults alike.

This bill will hurt programs like 4-H and FFA. The kids in these programs learn responsibility with taking care of their animals. Showmanship by showing their animals in shows and gaining knowledge of being responsible with their money as they sell what they raise. If you pass this bill you will be taking away what these programs stand for. I was in 4-H and I can not believe this bill is even being considered. Vote No!! This bill would do away with one of the most wholesome and rewarding activities that our youth, and people of all ages can benefit from. The relationship people have with their pets is so valuable. I can speak personally to say that raising and caring for animals can be more theraputic than visits to a professional in times of life crisis. Hobby breeders such as myself (as I raise show rabbits) don't expect to make a lot of money raising and selling exotics. They raise them because they love the animals. They love the relationships that they develope with other breeders and exibitors. There are lifelong freindships that evolve. There are multiple generations of family members who can share this hobby. The youth learn from the older people. The older people learn from the youth. This may be an activity that some children can participate in who might not be able to do other things. Youth who might not be able to play football, or musical instruments may be able to raise and care for, and even "show" small animals. The youth can learn responsiblity, economics, sportmanship, and ethics. There are youth breeders who sell their animals to sponsor their club activities. There are club raffles held to sponsor youth and community activities. There are scholorships given to promising youth breeders. For all the benifit that the people receive, the animals' health and wellbeing is of the upmost importance. For people like me, who enjoy raising show animals, it is essential that the animals be healthy and well cared for. What about programs like 4-H? This is a very old program that has benefited youth for years. As responsible breeders, there are people with vast knowledge who are always more than willing to, not only provide an animal for sale to a young person as a project, but also to offer knowledge on care for that animal. This is knowledge that can't just be read about in a book. Even if hobby breeders s
