We the undersigned believe that the Seattle Post-Intelligencer globe, which sits atop the PI headquarters at 101 Eliot Ave W, Seattle, WA 98119, represents an important and priceless artifact of Seattle and its people. We respectfully request that the globe remain intact and on display here in the City of Seattle.

Should the PI close its doors and cease publishing a newspaper in any form, we respectfully request The Hearst Corporation donate the globe to a nonprofit here in Seattle capable of providing adequate care of the globe to ensure its long-term existence.

The 30-foot steel globe was manufactured by Pacific Car and Foundry and Electrical Products Consolidated and placed atop the old PI location at Sixth Avenue and Wall Street in 1948. The globe moved to its current location in 1986.

Local artist Clair Colquitt built the base for the globe when it moved and the globes power outages over the years are a symbol of the difficult times Seattle citizens have faced.

In closing, the globe has become a familiar and vital part of Seattle life. Its absence would do harm to the psyche of the city and would be a loss to future generations of Seattlites who may not learn about the PI's contributions spanning 146 years.

The Associated Press reports that Seattle Post-Intelligencer managing editor David McCumber has said the globe will stay put at its current location for at least a couple more years until the PI's lease expires. The PI plans to run its web-only version from the site.

I support this petition. The P-I Globe is every bit as important as the Pike Place Market clock!

Like the Space Needle, we have a city treasure that is still part of Seattle's history. Let's keep it here!
