As the owner of two pits I see this as a horrible solution to stop the creation of pit fighting dogs and prevent this loving breed from becoming animal and human agressive. We should not be punishing this wonderful breed, but should be punishing more harshly the so called owners of the breed that turn such a loving devoted breed into the monsters that the media loves to portray them as.

We own two pit bulls, and love them both very much! My two pound Yorkie is meaner than my Pits! Pitbulls are not dangerous animals. ANY Domesticated animal is not dangerous. ANY domesticated any is just like any weapon, its only dangerous in the wrong hands or when not taken care of properly. I have a very wonderfull and loving 1 year old female pitbull. We have raised her to be caring and loving and friendly. She is just so sweet. If she is guilty of anything she is guilty of trying to wipe the smile off your face with her tongue. She will literally try to hold my girlfriend down and LICK her face off. She is especially fond of our kids. And protective of them as well. Me and the kids love to pick fight, but at times she thinks that I am hurting them and starts to bark AT ME! I dont punish her for trying to protect them, but I dont encourage it. We just stop and I tell her its ok and I tell her to calm down. Pitbulls were bred to be friendly to people. Back in the dog fight days if any pitbull bit a human it was put down imediately to not allow it to breed that into the dogs. Any dog is capable of causing trouble. The only reason pitbulls are targeted is because the ones that do cause trouble are dogs that came from a bad family that raised it WRONG. A family that probably wanted a pitbull for dog fighting. Or the family before theirs raised dog fighting dogs and allowed it to attack people and bred it. At either rate an irresponsible person got ahold of it. What should happen is the owners should be held responsible for their pets. There are allready laws governing this. A ban on pitbulls is not neccessary. I will be honest. I recently turned in a stray pit puppy and found out that they were going to kill him instead of finding him a home. I should have kept him but I already have two loveable Rottweillers. I had the pup for half a day before I turned him in thinking he would be taken care of. I called the next day to see what was going to happen to him and I was informed that they would kill him if the owner didn't come forward. If the owner had come forward, they would make them go through courts and red tape to get the dog back. Their prime intention was to kill-first and foremost. ARE WE NAZIS!!!!. Pitbulls are one of the best breeds out there, and should not be punished because people can not take care of them correctly! I know poodles that are more vicious than pit bulls. You cannot destroy an animal for its breed. We humans are responsible for how a dog is treated. I support this petition. I have a pit bull mix that I adopted from my local pound. He grew up with my cousins, through the ear and tail pulling and those babies love him so much. The are now 4 and 5 and cry whenever I take him home. He loves those kids too, always licking them and letting them take naps on his stomach. I believe that as long as you surround any person or animal they will return that love and that goes especially for our beloved pets that their only mission in life is to please us. I have a pitbull/sharpei mix. I got him at the amimal shelter 3 years ago. He had been badly abused with cigar burns all over his body. He was 24 hours away from being euthanized. This dog is the best dog I have ever owned. Because of him I have taken in 2 other Pits in similar situations. These dogs are amazing. With proper socialization and training, these dogs make wonderful pets. Pits are NOT a "fend-for-themsel ves" breed...if put in that situation...ANY DOG, will become mean. The problem is owners who are not willing to take care of their dogs and teach them right from wrong. Dogs are like children...if not taken care of...they will grow up to seriously hurt someone. I recently moved to a new town where I met a friend who has 2 pitbulls and a chow/pit mix. I will admit upon hearing this, I was slightly hesitant to meet these dogs (purely based on the reputation of pitbulls). However, these are some of the sweetest dogs I have met. I have a year old pitbull, Cocoa. At first when my boyfriend wanted to get a pitbull, I was uneasy about it, I had heard some stories. Come to find out, she is the best dog ever. I have an 8 month old baby and she loves her to death. She will jump in bed with her, cuddle up and go to sleep with her. She is the most loving, loyal dog ever. I would never own another breed besides a pitbull. Its the owners not the breed that make some aggressive. Cocoa is the most people and dog friendly dog I have ever owned. My neighbor has a miniture pintcher and one day it got into my backyard. He came over and asked me to get his dog for him and when I looked in the back yard Cocoa was laying on her back with the miniture pincher on top of her playing. Cocoa would never hurt anyone or anything. I have never met an aggressive pitbull. Pitbulls shouldn't be banned. They all get along great.

The Un-Warranted Negative Stigma
Unfortunately in today's society many people are ignorant about the American Pit Bull Terrier ( APBT ). Because of this ignorance, proliferation by the media of false data, and the false reports of individuals, this dog has went from a highly respected and desired pet to one that is unfairly judged, and in many cases around the country and even the world, are seized due to prohibition of ownership laws known as Breed Specific Legislation ( BSL ).
Additionally laws have been developed and rules established by "so called" humane organizations which seek to practice euthanasia on these animals without even the opportunity of adoption or being sent to rescue associations.
This stigma has hurt the Pit Bull dog more than any other breed of dog and caused unrealistic fear within much of the general community.
It is of the utmost importance for us as lovers of these beautiful and majestic animals to not promote this unfair negative stigma and counteract such negativisms with truth both by example and word.
To help promote the truth it is important for us to recognize the studies that have taken place which prove the true nature of the Pit Bull.
Farmers Branch, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, has kept accurate records since 1980. During a 7 year period from 1980 through 1987, this is what was recorded. Total bites: 1,593. Pit bulls, 30 bites, or 1.89% of the total. Other studies tend to show the same results and because of so many mongrels that have similar features and the unfair lumping in with the American Pit Bull Terrier ( APBT ), it seems reasonable to assume that the figures are actually much lower.
The American Temperament Test Society continually ranks Pits better in temperamnet than many other breeds such as the Airedale Terrier, Basenji, Beagle, Bichon Frise, Border Collie, Chihuahua, Collie, Dachshun

I have 2 pitbulls that are part of our family. They are always in our house or our yard. Even our elderly neighbors are glad we have them, they feel protected by them also. I can't say that about all the little chi-hua-hua dogs running all over our street, barking and bitng at child,adult and dog that walks outside.

These dogs are only as mean as their owner makes them. Any dog can be a biter. They don't bite for no reason, theres a reason why they bite. My son and his wife recently bought an APBT. It is the best dog I have ever seen. I have a german shepard mix that i rescued from a shelter in ky. She was very badly abused and left in the woods with her 8 pups to die. She is 6 year old i"ve had her for three and she had never barked or played or done any dog stuff until this littlt puppy taught her how to be a dog again.
