The Pitbull ban will not solve the problem, other breeds of dogs have also attacked people - it is the owners responsibility to look after their pets and have them properly trained.
Killing off the pitbull terriers is wrong on a fundamental human level. We should exercise responsibility for pets and not simply take the easy way out by getting rid of them. Please help to save the dogs!
"What is man without the beast? If all the beasts were gone, men would die from great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected."
- Chief Seattle (Duwarmish Tribe)
I have owned several large breed dogs over the years, rotts, dobermans and husky crosses, and as of recently can add bull terrier to that list. My daughter Erin was searching for the perfect companion for her beloved rott puppy and found Patch, a boxer-bull terrier cross, at a local humane society. We can only say that we wish we had gotten a bully sooner. He is loving and loyal, highly intelligent and one of the most eager to please fellows I have ever encountered. He loves cats and other dogs. He will be the last we can choose to own because of the ban. While working as a vet's assistant for several years I was never once bitten by a rott or husky or shepherd. Most of the bites I rec'd were cocker spaniels and poodles. I was also bitten by a golden retriever, one of the most trusted animals in the dog kingdom. I understand they were under stress and never once held it against them. I think we need to look at the responsible breeding of dogs, proper training facilities and just punishment for the owners of dogs that are not following the guidelines. I don't believe a ban on a breed will solve the dog bite problem. People who use dogs for protection will find another breed. How many breeds will have to be banned before those in government realize the dogs are not entirely the problem. Please reconsider the ban on pit bulls and ban irresponsible owners and breeders.
Ban the Deed, not the Breed! All dogs are a product of their environment. Dog owners - like parents are 100% responsible for the actions of our pets and children. We are in control. If we are not, obedience training goes a long way in solving any past issues with a 'rescue'. Patch and I thank you for your time!
All dogs deserve the rights of all animals and all people. Canada, and most certainly Ontario, is supposed to be a bi-racial place for everyone and everything to get together with no judgement made upon them. It is horrible to know that any Ontario person would agree with this ban. That 'any' Canadian would feel it right to do something of this nature. I am becoming ashamed to live here, and know that people beleive in such a torrible idea/ban. This ban will cause nothin but more problems and possible cause a rasist like belief among people causing , again, nothin but people on people hate offences. People open you're eye, research, think about what's being done here. Talk to people BEFORE brain washing them, and let people talk! Just b/c one person has a bias opinon towards a subject and high a level of power that gives them the right to effect everyone? Does this mean if someone of power is bias towards anything all they have to do is tel the gov.'t like they would there parent and get there own way? Mr. Brant makes me think of nothin more then a spoiled child crying to Mommy or Daddy knowing that if they cry enough their parents will just "fix" it to shut the child up easily. Fitting to the subject, hurtful Dogs(any "type" of dog) are normally from a house with nothing but spoiled, mis-treating children! Of any age a person who doesn't know how to care and properly train an animal is nothing but a child whos has in spoiled there whole life and never able to properly care responiablity for anything.
Our family adopted a wonderful pit bull in December and she has turned out to be obedient and gentle. NO THANKS for all the negative spin doctoring about the pit bull. CONVICTED PEDOPHILES GET MORE CONSIDERATION than a dog that hasn't done any harm to anyone.
you might as well ban poodles and cocker spaniels as well then, they statistically bite more people, but i guess they just dont make a good enough story do they?
When are people going to realize that it is not the animals fault? Do you Ban your teenager because they start lashing out and hurting others? Any animal can be turned mean its simply a matter of how they are raised and treated. Ultimatly its not the dogs they need to focus on, it is the owners who abuse and mistreat there dogs they need to focus on. They are the ones whos should be banned from owing any animal. It blows my mind how people can be so ignorant to this fact and how they can stereotype an animal. I own a terrific dog who is crossed with pitbull and rottie, what do ya say to that Mr. Brant? I am not going to muzzel him when I walk him I am responsible enough to know and read my dogs body language and as a responsible owner will not let an unfortunat situation come up. And one more thing if my dog were to bite someone it would not be his fault, it would be mine or the person who provoked him! Animals do such things out of fear or as a means of protection to themselves. Do you really think they sit there and think hmmm maby I will go and bite the neighbours kid or their cat? Grow up all of you who are so ignorant and stereotypical. You need to open your eyes and see that the real problem is in the owners.
Michael Bryant should find a new Salem for his witch hunt and leave our much loved pets alone. Bryant was interviewed by City TV and couldn't even GUESS the pitbull in a lineup of pictures of dogs, he was confronted with his incorrect answer which in turn he accused the reporter that he was tricked. Michael Bryant is being totally one sided and not listening to the professionals of the dog world. This province is becoming a very scary place to live when the leaders of our province will be responsible for the mass murder and torture of our pets. The government should be charged with cruelty to amimals.
Congratulations Michael Bryant you are an evil man and by the way I have a hole in my leg from a poodle I am sure there is ALSO a small percentage of people bitten by this breed, should we ban Poodles too?
It is totally not fair to ban pitbulls. The digs are perfectly fine it is the owners that are the bad news. I personallythink it is an outrage to ban the breed because some owners are not cut out for the job of owning a dog that is that strong and hyper. Decrimination in dogs is what we have been fighting in our rspecies, so what makes it okay for descrimination in other species.
I own a bullmastiff, and I have had people come up to me and tell me that I have to muzzle my dog. I think it is very insulting to have to do that to an animal, no matter what breed they are! It's the owners of the vicious dogs that should be banned from owning an animal!
Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. -Quote by Albert Swheitzer
I am against this ban, Pitbull have suffered a lifetime of pain for they're owners...unconditional love is all they are guilty for. Pitbulls are not born aggressive, people teach them to be aggressive.
I just adopted a 1 year old Sheppard/pittbul. He is the sweetest dog in the world. My kids love it. Even may wife, usually affraid of dogs likes him.
The last 4 days, while walking my "bad" dog, i had two woderfull little "safe" dogs running and barking at us. My "dangerous" dog just stayed still. And the only command that he knows, until now, its sit.
this ban is only showing the ignorance and patheticness that todays government is running ramped with. the only thing wrong with pit bulls is they will do anything to please there master. yes that even means attack humans and other animals. for what most people do not know is that these dogs who do attack have been tortured for their whole live yet are still willing to do what there owners want them to do. it's a sick thing when humans use ignorance and media to kill off something theat will dedicate it's life to it's master
the ban regarding pitbulls is unfair and inhuman. we are dicriminating against a specific animal for what reason? because we have hd visious encounters with some? wat would happen if we did this to everyone/thing races and religions would be banned for terrisom attacks or whatever else...i is just planly injust.
I own a very affectionate pitbull...he is the biggest baby and he is part of our family. I am 200% against the ban of pitbulls. Obviously people who agree with ban have never had one.

For a World that teaches the World to be hate and judgment free- the Ontario Guverment is sure being discriminating! I was raised my entire life to believe that not one race is trouble, people cause trouble. Now to have our own goverment pass a bill of HATE! I feel ashamed to live here. Now you are going to kill off those poor dogs in shelters, many of which have done nothing wrong! I thank god for Karma- the Karma that will come back on those that wrong an innocent creature of this world! I am not a religious person, but I prey everyday for those helpless dogs who willl be killed at the hands of Evil!
Michale Bryant is nothig but an dumb politican who knows nothing about dogs, he's a animal hater, go get a real job. Normal people would get advise from veternarians, or owners, not politicans, everyone knows thier scum
This is just ridiculous. It is a proven fact that pit's are great family pets and out of over 100 dogs tested for tendency to bit the pit scored 4th from the bottom. If you are going to ban pit's than you need to ban all the other dogs than are more likely to bite. My pit is wonderful with my two kids, I trust her 100% with my baby and my preschooler who is rough with her. I think you need to start punishing the people who are mistreating these extremely loyal and affectionate dogs.
Mr. Brant you and I both know that it's not the dogs fault but the owners. I know 3 pitbulls and they are lovely dogs. You know that it's just not that type of breed.
In our local news paper there was an artical about this girl that was attacked by a dalmation. Can you guess how many times she was attacked by that thing before it was uthinized????? She was attacked 3 or 4 times over the years and finally they did something about it. Facts state that pitbulls aren't the number one biter. Can you guess what is?? It's the cockerspanial. We knew a lady who owned one and she said while in the show ring with the dog it turned on her. It started baring it's teeth and growling. Aparently the dogs attitude changed imedialty. The lady said it was like night and day. One minute the dog was there and the next it was gone. So don't go laying the blame on the pitbull. It's the owners who should be held responsible not the dog. I think what you should start doing is make people get permits if they want to buy a dog over 90 lbs. and they have to take that dog to puppy school and learn how to handle it.
You people are making a big deal out of the pitbulls when really you should make a big deal over the type of owners these dogs are sold to.
Dear Mr. Byant
I am against the pitbull ban 100% I think that it's discrimination against the breed!Instead of baning the dog why don't make people who want to own dogs over 90 lbs. maek them get permits to own the bigger dogs, and make they go to puppy school. Start opening your eyes and looking towards the owners not the poor dogs. They are just pupets on someone's string.
Mr Bryant, I can see you have no love for animals but you are a government official you represent us. This problem is bigger than pitbulls and you know it. You are starting a very dangerous president here, and it has been done before and it doesn't work. When the pits are gone it will be back to torturing sheppards or dobermans. You have to focus on the bad dog owners open your eyes. Y
you know something if u have any breed of dog it has the potential to be a killer or it has the potential to be be a loving family member any one tries to take my son from me can try it over my cold dead body u ppl need to shake your head punish the irresponsibleowners not the dogs themselves you make me sick
Mr. Bryant, we cannot solve this problem until we start punishing irresponsible owners! These animals are beaten, starved, over-bred, chained, and fought and all they want is to be loved. Don't act like we are prosecuting offenders like we should! Court Case pit bulls sit in cages for years only to have their owners get a slap on the wrist and a small fine. Not only have I worked with hundreds of pit bulls but I own four and never once have I had any problem! This is because I am a responsible owner. It is really sad that humans bred this dog to have certain traits and now, wouldn't you know, we are trying to wipe them out because of these traits. Please don't make this mistake. Please look into prosecuting irresponsible owners and people involved in vicious dog fighting rings instead. Also Mr. Bryant I would suggest that you raise a pit bull before making any biased opinions about the breed.
We adopted a pitbull terrier in December from the SPCA, he is the most loving dog you would ever want. We would be lost without him now. We were introduced to the breed a couple of years ago when my brother brought one home from Vancouver. We were worried about him bringing this dog home because we were like a lot of other people who know nothing about the breed. But once we saw him, we fell in love with him immediately, so when we went looking for a dog it was easy to decide what kind to get. This ban on the pit bull is crazy, the ban should be on irresponsible dog owners.
False sense of security...that's what it's about. Making those who are afraid think something is actually being done by persecuting those without a 'voice' when in fact the real problem still remains, the bad dog owners.
As the owner of an APBT the ban will make my families life more difficult. Our 9 year old dog is nothing short of exceptional with our toddlers. She is gentle and very carefull around young children. With any dog or animal in general, "commonsense" must be used along with proper training and supervision. Banning the animal is not the answer. Please people address the real problem. This nothing short of genicide and dictatorship. The real threat is the level of ignorance displayed by Mr. Bryant. I wonder how much more important and relevant issues are dealt with?
I know a staffy bull terrier and he is the nicest animal ever. Its not the dogs fault its the stupid irresponsible owner who can't spend the time to train their dog. Any dog can be vicious if not trained, you just can't kill off agressive behaviour!
This ban is absolutely insane. Banning this breed will do nothing to ensure public safety as it is the owners who are mostly to blame for the dogs behaviour. As well, any dog can be trained to be vicious, from the largest to the smallest. The most vicious dog I know is a jack russell terrier who bites strangers AND the people he knows.
pitbulls are very loving, loyal dogs.yes, they are protective of their owners, but they are only mean if they are mistreated.i've had all types of dogs in my life, this one is the best!
If we neuter every pitbull remaining in hopes to kill off ther breed, should we not neuter every person who has commited a crime, in hopes of discontinueing that gene. The pitbull ban is inhumane and greedy upon our part as a species. Just like people, a dogs temperment will depend on how it is raised, not its breed.
It is how the dog is raised that determines it's temperement, not the breed. Besides, anyone that knows anything about Pit Bulls knows SOME of them are naturally DOG AGGRESIVE they are NOT aggresive towards people unless mistreated!!
I believe that all dogs should be muzzled while out in public. This would help and prevent people from dog bites,..and attacks. Excluding or singling out a certain breed is not going to stop these things from happening considering there are various types of violent dogs out there. German Shepards.Rott whilers etc...People also forget that dogs are not born visious, but there owners always have some part and influence on how a dog is brought up. Blame the owners for their dogs behaviour not the species of dog. It's all the owners fault.
Mr. Bryant is completely uneducated on the matter and it makes me sick to my stomach to think of the fear that he is instilling in people. If Ontario goes ahead with the ban it will result in a higher crime rate and even more illegal activity around these precious animals. The only people this ban is hurting are the responsible dog owners that truly care for these animals. Do you think the people that abuse these dogs and fight them are going to be affected by this? The answer is no. I strongly urge Mr. Bryant to take a look at Canadas dog bite statistics. The dogs that society has labelled as "friendly" are much higher on the list than pitbulls. There is a polmeranian that constantly tries to attack my pitbull when he walks by. My dog just hangs his head in shame because all he wants is a friend, and you want to ban my dog? These people need to get their act together and their facts straight. Punish the people that cause these types of incidents to happen. Not the dog. What is going on in Ontario is disgusting and it is genocide. Would you destroy a race of humans because a few people murdered? I dont think so.
It's this kind of crap that makes me ashamed to be an Ontarian. Mr. Bryant, it makes me sick to think that someone with your logic and obvious lack of compassion is running our province...........What a joke!!!
I dont look at my dog as " a pitbull" I look at her as our family pet named Angel who just happens to be a pitbull. If it's in this bread of dogs nature to attack and be vicious because of their history of being a fighting bread of dog, then while we are getting rid of the breed of dog with ancestors known for being dangerous. Why don't we get a list of every inmate in every prison who is serving a capital crime, put all of their blood line family members in the same prison before they hurt someone, because obviously our government is educated enough to know it's all in the blood line. Well Mr.Bryant, can we start with your complete family tree?????
Dear Mr Bryant - I find it hard to believe that with poverty, air pollution, health care, affordable housing and host of other issues that are pertinent to the health and well being of Ontario citizens, that you would chose media hype as your government's political mainstay. Shame on you. And shame on you for not acknowledging the undoubtalbe expertise of the Ontario Veterinarian Association, or the Canadian Kennel Club or the SPCA - all qualified individuals to report on what constitues a dangerous dog, unlike yourself. If I didn't love dogs so much, Mr Bryant, I would say that you are a dangerous dog. Unfortunately, you remain a greater menace to dogs than they to you.
Why ban the dog, its so the owners fault in the attacks. If the dogs were trained and watched properly the attacks wouldn't happen. Instead of banning them why not set up a licenced coarse to own them like with guns if the dogs are so dangerous. I think this is out of whack I own 3 pitty's and I just cant picture them harming anything.
It's too late now but you should target either ALL dogs or just the owners. Dogs are like guns. if you don't take care of them, you will have accidents.
the owners of these dogs should be punished, not the poor dogs themselves.i used to have a rottweiller and it was more vicious than my staffordshire bull terrier. i knew the owner of the mother and he treated the rotti very badly and that is where my rotti got her aggression from.
I have three Pitbulls and have done dog shelter work and Pitbull rescue for years. I think it is unfair to outlaw any specific breed of dogs. After workin with all sorts of breeds...it is not the breed, it is THE OWNER!! Breed bans are not the answer.
I personally do not own a pitbull but i do intend on getting one before the ban is in full effect, i have a few friends that own pitbull x dogs and they are nothing but friendly. I think this is BS, owners just need to smarten up.
My dog Sage is loved by all our friends even ones that are scared of dogs, because they know if you love them and give them a chance they can be a great companion.
I own a black lab/ pitbull cross and she is the best dog ive ever owned, and a HUGE suck!!! from day one i trained her to be a suck she is my "baby Girl" and she is around infants and toddlers and is fine.
I own a German Sheppard/Pitbull mix and he is the most amazing dog I ever owned. I take him to a leashless park every weekend and everyone loves him. anyhow, I don't beleive that this is the logical way to go. I too strongly believe that the public is undeducated when it comes to dogs. They don't attack for no reason. It's obviously because of they way they were raised. I think it should be the owners responsibility. I was attacked by a german sheppard when I was younger, I didn't make a big deal to have them banned. Just to end this, It was proven by an american study for dog behaviour that Pitbulls have a higher anger tollerance than Golden retreivers. It was proven that Golden retreivers SNAP quicker than pitbulls.
I find it pathetic and appalling that our government has decided to be breed specific in a ban. How about making the OWNER accountable! What a concept don't you think!! Have the people making and demanding this ban ever owned a dog?? Apparently not! If so, then this ban would never happen they would see the irresponsibility of it and what it stands for. What about public voice, we obviously do not count! I own a mixed Pit/Lab/Whippet an incredible animal with kids & other animals & she would protect me if needed (a great comfort),it saddens me to know that if a "pit" were to have pups within 90 days after the ban takes effect then they would be killed if a home outside the province couldn't be found. Who is going to pay for the spaying/neutering for this ban? This is definately not the solution it is creating a new bigger problem. If one wants a vicious dog they will create one in another breed. This ban has got to stopped somehow. I cannot express just how furious this makes me. By the way, my daughter was bitten in the face (at the eyes) by our gentle "basset hound" who became vicious, how 'bout that!!!
banning pitbulls will not solve the problem it will just create underground breading, a pitbull ban is discrimination. i think ontario has bigger issue the governments should be focusing on so stop wasting tax payers money and focus on real issues. you give murders a second chance at life yet u want to destroy animals that have never harmed anyone its descrimination simple as that.its amazing that you guys can run a province no wonder ontario has so much debt
I adopted a pitbull X 4 years ago from the . I chose her not because of her breed but because she is a quiet, lovable and well trained pet and friend. People need to be responsible pet owners, regardless of breed
I had the pleasure of dog sitting Boutros, a 1 year old Pitbull who brought joy to my life...albeit only for a week...he wsa awesome, I have since fallen in love with the breed and WILL get onebefore the ban is implemented.
This bill will do nothing! The problem is not the breed, it's the owners and it's about time they take responsablty for there own actions. Why not ban the number one biter The Golden Retreiver? People need to be accountable for what they raise and breed. It is not the breed but the individual dog and how the owner raises it. Not everyone should own a pitbull but resposible owners should not be punished. These dogs can be and are just like over grown babies.
Guilty until proven innocent?!?!
This is a law that will do more harm than good. It will take a few serious bites by other breeds for the public to understand that this bill has done nothing.
I visited Niagra Falls a few years ago, and greatly enjoyed my trip. I WON'T be returning if a ban is in place, because I would not be able to bring my best doggie friend.
www.loveabull.org
my name is tabby I am ten and I would like to know why you want to take mt best friend away from my? I would not take one of your kids from you. My dog has never hurt anyone and this ban is very unfair! You make me very sad! One day I will be grown Up and I will have your job. Maybe I can ban people like you!
