Why is everyone so fast to punish a dog? Because of their original history? Breeders and other people have come along way from where the APBT first started from! 99% of all pit owners don't use/abuse their dogs the way they were bred, in fact most have bred those qualities out of their dogs, even in the history the dogs were still devoted loving members of the family. I have 5 kids and my wife runs a daycare, I have yet seen any of my dogs bite one of my children or daycare kid/parent. If you are going to ban any dog start banning the Lads and Spaniels they have a greater percentage rate of biting before any pitbull. I have owned Chows and have my first APBT, most people don't even know my Pit is one until I tell them... So go figure! If I thought Pits were such a bad aggressive dog I wouldn't have bought one for the family specially with having kids. BUt it's the total oppisite, my dogs are great with my kids, I never worry about them with my pit or chow... I think you so called learders of our country need to maybe do your research and pull your heads out of that dark hole thier in... WE ALWAYS FEAR WHAT WE DON'T KNOW... SO TRY TO KNOW AND LEARN... I thought we lived in a free country? isn't that why ever other counties people come here? to better their life for them and their families? Hmm maybe it's time that the leards take a look at the CONSTITUTION

I've had 2 pitbulls in my life. At one point before I became owners of Pits, I was believing the hype like everyone due to the Media's input on these dogs. when I got my first pit, I could not believe how gentle these dogs where, very loyal and pleasant to have around. My grandson was just 3 days old coming home from the hospital and my daughter put my grandon on the floor in carriage set so that my dog can be familiar with the new member of the family, all he did was snif my grandson and circle the carriage and sat down next to him. that really impressed me, because it seemed like he was protecting him and he has been protective of him ever since. My grandson play with him, tugs on his ears, sit on his back, pull on his tail. You can not do this with any other dogs like Akitas, cokerspaniel, rotties or dobbies. these dogs are very loyal and love kids and attention. Rethink your decision.
Pit bulls are wonderful, kind and gentle; some of their owners are not and this gives them a bad rap. There are vicious Jack Russel Terriers too, but no one tries to ban them as a whole!

Instead of banning a wonderful breed that you know nothing about, why don't the governing bodies start running a background check on people to prevent the bad deeds of owners. Anyone with a felony or some type of drug conviction may be banned from owning a pit bull. I guess if we start banning pit bulls, cocker spaniels, dachsunds, and other toy type dogs should be banned aswell. They will bite 100 times before a pit bull will bite someone once. These dogs arent born bad. ITs the people that make them bad. I have had American Pit Bull Terriers around my kids since they ere babies and i wouldnt trust anyother dog....not even my mothers collies. Please rethink your decision. In Arizona I watch a TV special about Pit Bulls and the director of The Arizona Humane Sociaty mentioned that the only dog bite or attacks the news will report on is Pitt Bulls. She also mentioned they have more bites by other breeds and also stated the Pit Bull ISNT TO BLAME BUT THE MEDIA!! The pitbull is now a animal that is looked down ONCE IT WAS AMEICAS DOG. Stood for pride and strenghth. Think!!!Why this breed and not the dobie or rottie, bulldog and so on.Because when you mention the Pittbull people will list good or bad. Is it popularity you seek?

pits & 3 kids. My kids are under the age of 10 and I have never had any problems with my kid hurting my dogs.

Mrs.Beffort i believe you should rethink your proposed breed specific ban and delegate more effort into a bill that would place the owners of these certain breeds under stringent guidelines in order to own them. Not all dogs are created the same and should be put in the same category, I belive more stringent ownership laws will weed out the responsible from the irresponsible. From a Loving APBT Owner.

Honestly, I too was one of those who believed all the hype about this breed. Then my wife (who grew up around APBTs) convinced me to get one. And I am so glad that I did. I will never own another breed of dog.They are the most loyal and loving dogs. The people who want them banned are the ones who know absolutely nothing about them and have probably never come into contact with one.To not have met a well trained, loving APBT is a shame!
punish the dogs owners for anything that occurs, such as dog attacks stereo type it ohh it had to be a pit. open your eyes and look at the statistics of dog attacks and bites. so ban your labs and cocker spaniels they rate in the top 5 on bites. do your research before you make these decisons all your gonna do is make the demand higher by banning it. ste higher standards for breeders and owners of all DOGS!

BSL is not the answer, it has not solved problems only made more. The breed is not the problem irresponsible dog ownership is and that is something that you have in any breed. Let the punishment fit the crime, the crime that is committed by irresponsible dog owners, not the dogs.

Punish irrisponisble owners not the dogs that are currantly being owned by them. Take a true look at the places that BSL has been placed. most of them havent cut down on bites in some places bites have actually gone up because most bite are your "family" breeds. Labs, retrivers, Collies are bit biters. As are the small breeds if you want to ban a vicious breed try chiwawa they bite more people than and pitbull. and there is less of them.
all parties involved need to educate themselves. speak to reputable breeders and you will see. pit bulls are the most loyal loving breed and should not be punished for doing what they were taught to do. punish the bad owners not the good dogs.
I've owned a pitbull for over 10-yrs. I also have had a small child living with me. The only time he has been bitten was from the neighbors golden retriever. Should we ban them? Sounds a bit ridiculous.

I really can't say I recall a pit bull who has committed either of the afor mentioned crimes.Even though some minors have. We haven't outlawed having children who also only know what their taught.Maybe this is this person s ajenda to remove all living things that do not fallow their code of conduct.

It's not the breed that is the problem, it is the way the owners raise and care for the dog. Any dog wcan have a bad temperment, but if you take the time to train it correctly the probability it will hurt someone are slim to none. This is just another face of our Government being Facist and taking away our rights.
I haveowned many different breeds{ shelties, dobies, basenjis, pitbulls, greyhound.
Some of these were adopted as adults and others I raised from puupies
there are no "bad breeds". A dog's manners and attitude is a reflection of time spent in training and social/psychological nurture by the owner
I currently have 7 pitbulls and a Beauceron. To have the government make me destroy my dogs when they and I have done no wrong is communistic, Set up laws that pose real punishment for the demented individuals who instill blind rage into any dog through abuse, inbreeding, training for human agressiveness without true knowledge such as a profesional trains personal protection dogs. Double the punishment when a dog that has been documented for threatening behavior finds it's way to freedom and terrerizes/ mauls/ kills people or pets. Even if pitbulls were by nature -m viciuos- there are thousands of them in residential homes that are responsibly contained and trained. Otherwise there would be thousands of mauled/ killed people and pets every day. It is not the breed- but the few who shouldn't own any dog stronger than a poodle wo pose a threat to the general public. Have laws that make them pay for the consequences of the dogs they created into monsters

The APBT is not a dangerous dog, this breed is not born dangerous and vicious, owners are responsible for this type of behavior. Please take the time to become educated about the breed before making an inaccurate assumption. Punishment should be put in place for irresponsible ownership, possibly licensing requirements for all domestic animals put in place for each county. The dogs that are involved in attacks are no different than children who are taught to hate other races of individuals, these dogs are taught by people to bite, you don't hear about the ones who don't bite, and are not aggressive, or maybe it's that the media doesn't care to report on those dogs.

My pit bull is my best friend as well as my baby! All my neices and nephews agree that he is a great dog. Don't punish responsible owners for things that bad people do! It's not the dogs fault if it it abused! Most people that want this ban don't even know what a pit bull looks like! People fear and ridicule what they don't understand. If people would just take the time to get to know this wonderful breed, I am 100% positive they would change their minds. Targeting a specific breed of dog will not do anything to protect people from problem dogs. If we want to prevent dog bites we must target the irresponsible owners that allow their pets to become a public danger. It would be much more effective to revise dangerous dog laws without targeting a specific breed. Any dog can bite. Any breed can have a vicious temperment. Laws that ban breeding or requiring spay/neuter would directly target people who show their dogs. These people are typically the most responsible and often have highly trained animals who compete in everything from conformation to agility. But most registries require these show dogs to remain un altered. These responsible owners would be forced to choose between giving up their homes or their dedication to the betterment of this breed. No doubt that the criminals and puppy mills would care less about the laws and will continue to crank out litter after litter of poor quality dogs...the ones that are usually seen in the news. As an American I take pride in freedom. When the law tells me I can get a carry permit for a large caliber hand gun, but I cannot choose the breed of dog to train and show, or even drive through the state with, something has gone terribly wrong. BSL is a huge mistake and it is definatly not derived from American values.

I think that APBT's are the most abused breed out there now and something needs to be done to stop the ABUSE...not stop the ownership of these dogs!
On the off chance that I repeat what is already being stated by others on this petition, I'm not sorry! There is no bad breed of domestic dog.However, there are bad owners! Please do the responsible thing and implement a plan of action to punish those who abuse and misuse all breeds. Don't punish everyone just because of a few irresponsible beings. It is quite unfortunate that the majority in this country view the American Pit Bull Terrier as a menousing villan, out to destroy civilization as we know it. This couldn't be farther from the truth! Pit bulls are by far the most abused breed out there today. Horrible atrosities are committed to these dogs for the amusement and personal gain of HUMAN BEINGS! Pit bulls don't ask for that life, they are unfortunately dropped into despair. Lets work on the real problems and instate enforcable and reasonable laws to help remedy the problems.
Senator, honestly. Have you even looked at the statistics of dog bites? Let alone talked to any animal experts or responsible owners of these fine animals? If you had I can't understand how you can propose such ignorant legislation. Look at the real problem at hand,and it isn't these dogs. I am a proud owner of this great breed of animal, and won't let that be taken. If proposing any other laws why not more restrictions on the owners the real issue here. Just a thought.
its not the dogs fault idiots want to own them. i always thought new mexico was a stse that believed in freedom since thats wear i lived befor i joined the marine corps now i probobly wont even move back because of this ban on pit bulls me and my wife love our dogs and we wont give them up. it seems to me they need to quit taking the easy lazy way out of things and focus on the bad owners
