Take more time to develop a better solution! You are unfortunately choosing a simple but ineffective answer to a problem that begs for deeper insight and understanding in order to be effectively addressed. In the future, will you look at N.M. crime stats and determine that since more serious crimes are committed by minorities that they should no longer be allowed to breed? Please realize the severity of your decision and don't do this. Please don't.

I own two pit bulls and have two small children. My dogs are great and I know my kids are safe with them. One of my pits is a service dog, without her I would be lost. Banning this breed will not stop the irresponsible people from owning them it will take this great breed away from law abiding citizens. Not the thugs that will own them regardless of your law. Spend some time with a pit rescue, educate yourself before making such a terrible proposal.

I have lived in Grants NM all of my life. I have also owned and raised pitbulls the majority of my life. This bill that is trying to be proposed really upsets me. I have 2 small children that have been raised around our pitties since they were born. I have never had to worry about them being hurt by them because I have taken it upon myself to be a responsible pitbull owner. I would suggest that a Breed Specific Legislation would cause more grief that it would solve and problems. All we ask of you Senator is to overlook your options and make the right choice. BSL doesn't always solve it. I would suggest to you that harsher penalties on the individuals who abuse and neglect these animals. We still live in America, The land of the free and the home of the brave!!!! PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS PITBULLS PRAYER You made me what I am today Courage at it's best. You wanted me to have no fear, A cut above the rest. Not only did I master that, I've thrown in loyalty too. Look past my eyes, into my soul, You know I would die for you. I'll watch your kids, I'll watch your house. Your praise will be my crown. Ask what you will, I'll do my best. I'll even be your clown. But some of you don't like me. I'm sure I don't know why. The only thing I'm guilty of is courage, love and try. But still they want to see me go, they want my breed to end. Will I see you sitting idly by? You whom I call "Friend"? You made me what I am today; you never saw me waiver. I've done my best to keep you safe. Won't you please return the favor?

Why put an end to a dog that was a national icon in two world wars? A dog that gained relative fame in its role on the Little Rascal tv show where it was interacting with children on a regular basis. BSL is like saying that one race of people is responsible for a certain percentage of crime so we will just ban that race from our town, and in our day and age of "animal rights" how can this be justifiable. Harsher punishment for irresponsible dog owners is the answer, not outlawing all dogs of a certain breed due to the irresponsible actions of a few owners of that breed.
#176

Darvell Harrison said 12/30/04, 2:24 pm (verified)
There has never been a single test by science that proves that any breed of dog is "vicious" by birth. BSL Is unenforceable and will only serve to punish the law abidding citizens and they are typically not the ones with badly trained/raised dogs.

The dog, no matter what breed, is never the cause of an attack. The owner is. If people require BSL, don't ban the breed, another will just take its place, try requiring basic training in ALL dogs. My pits are better at social groups of people or dogs than my neighbors yellow lab who DID attack a friend of mine's female.

Pit bulls are great dogs! I bet most of you legislators haven't ever been around a pit bull before. If you had, this wouldn't be happening. Dogs of any breed have the potential to be dangerous. Why punish responsible owners and good dogs, just because of a few isolate occurances. To something proactive with your position and create solid legislation that will protect the general community from menacing dogs of all breeds!

A ban for what reason? Any dog can be fought. Any dog can be people aggressive. ANY DOG CAN BITE! The problem is the OWNER. Ban him from the dogs. Creatures are put on the endangered species list constantly. Extinction of a breed isn't the right answer for the problem. Thats where this is all going in the end. Ban them from the areas, ban them from breeding, kill of pitbulls. Not on my clock pal.

What would happen if we banned a certian race of people from the US? People would be incredibly mad, and it probably wouldn't even have the chance to happen. Why is breed specific ban any different? People turn a blind eye to it because they're dogs. Yes, but it's the same damn thing. If a lab mauls someone, people ignore it. But if a dog with a broad skull does it, it makes front pages as a pit bull. If one white man murdered 15 people, should be ban all white people from the US because they're all potential murders? No! If a pit bull mauled a child, look into the details. Was there an irresponsible parent? A misbehaving child teasing the dog? Then punish the parent and the child.

They have been around my children ,thier friends and other children and even strangers. All these animals ask is for you to love them. I believe that the owners should be held accountable for thier actions not the banning of an entire breed of animal. I have been in law enforcement for 20 plus years, it has been my experience that there are many different breeds of dogs involved in bite cases, animals at large cases, and vicious dogs. In these cases, we hold the dog owners liable for their dogs actions, and not the breed type. I think that a bill to address the dog owners liability in your State would be more helpful to your citizens.

I do have the ability to comprehend with the way in which some people have come to poor opinions and outlandish ideas about these dogs. When the majority of the public "eductation" on this breed consists of media propeganda, reports of fighting circles, attack dogs and cases of abuse and neglect it is easy to say that it's a "bad breed". It is easy to say yet another entire breed of animal should be put to extinction by our hand, ignoring any possible negative outcomes. It is easy to come up with easy solutions to problems that could be better handled with greater attention to detail and to the true facts. It is much harder to come up with a solution that puts the responsibility into the hands of humans, force them to become educated and to care well for an animal they have taken possession of. I understand that it is difficult to make the proper, unprejudiced decision, taking all details into factor, ignore ignorance which encourages fear and the want to contol, set your bias' aside and set regulations for the true neccessary guidelines, but that is the job you have been assigned to do. You picked it. And when you do, please consider this; it is not the animal that should be put to an end, rather, the INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE that are responsible for the true horrible acts: abuse, neglect, greed and ignorance.
