As a responsible APBT owner and advocate, I must protest Breed specific legislation in any form. There are no bad dogs; there are bad owners, bad breeding and bad press, all of which are responsible for the villification of this breed. Irresponsible, abusive owners must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. It is only then that the current issue with "dangerous dogs" will move toward resolution. Ban Pit Bulls and another breed will soon take their place. BSL is not the answer.

Sen.Beffort.I have been raising APBT for twenty years,and have raised my daughter around APBT,with no problems.I know two men that raised their kid's,grandkids and soon their greatgrandkids,with know problems,one is a normal joe,and one has a high standing in the comunity.I know a lady that had the love of APBT'S passed to her by her dad,and she passed the love to her daughter and her daughter passed the love to her daughter,the mother is collage educated,the daughter is also,and the granddaughter I'm sure will be going to collage also,that is one of the major misconseptions about the APBT is that only bad people own them,not true.For myself I am the average joe,I'm plumber,I have a modest house,I'm a martial art's insructor and of course my daughter is one of my top students,she is also a straight A student.I think PETA type group's make-up and spread the worste possible stereo types of APBT'S and their owners,because this is the way they git and keep their funding.The news media is the worste about promoting the false stereo types about APBT'S and their owners.Throgh out my adult life I heard of terrible attacks and and even death caused by non-pitbull breeds,but the media only covers the pitbull stories because they think that is what people want to hear.The media wants to spread fear in what ever form,pitbulls will eat your children,PETA,HSUS AND MEDIA PROPAGANDA TO KEEP PEOPLE STURED UP.....B.COCHENNIC
for the legislature of nm to ban the american pit bull terrier just blows my mind. That you all think that is what the people of NM voted you in office for, instead of worring about the quality of education, health,and well being of the residents.you should be making and enforcing laws against the people that are raising and fighting this breed. not those of us that breed and raise these animals for the love of the breed. i have 3 Pitbulls and they live in the house with me and my 3 kids at night. and not once have i had an incident where one attacked me or my kids
Punishing a dog in this manner is like criticizing and banning all children from going out into public with muzzles on because some children bite and can't play well with others . Pit Bulls are part of my family so I read this as they are as equal because an animal nor a child should be treated in this manner. This just makes me irate to think of it. People stereotype everything including the Pit Bull examples are cheerleaders: Most people think they are stupid and cannot do hard manual labor because they are fragile, many of them sustain a high GPA and do hard core workouts to stay in tip top shape. I wish I could be more like a cheerleader. I wouldn't want to admit it in public due to fear of criticism. Pit Bulls are stereotyped in the same way. Not all Pits are vicious creatures and if they are it's there owners fault. If a Parent is teaching a child terrible things as to bite other children then the Parent is to blame. If an owner is teaching a dog to fight and be mean then the owner is responsible and should be the one to take the punishment not the dog. Come on people these animals listen to us, never have anything to say just listen with a smile on their face. You could call this poor dog every bad word in the book and they will still show you love. It is sad to see that some of these poor creatures never get the chance to be loved at all, thus is a bigger reason the owner should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Not all Pit Bulls are created equal, just as humans are not created equal. So does this mean that a "Ban" on humans will be in effect once all breeds of dogs are banned? While there are a handful of Pets in any Breed that may cause trouble, the same applies to humans. If 10% out of 100 humans were bad, does that mean the other 90% of humans pay the price for that 10%? C'mon! Doesn't the Senate have anything else better to do other than to "Ban" breeds of dogs. Isn't there a War going on? Why doesn't the Senate put a "Ban" on War? Why? Because War is important. Well, the same applies to the Breed of the APBT. They are important because aside from providing protection as to the likes of War, they also provide comfort, companionship and loyalty. I am a 28yr old native of New Mexico and I would just like to say that banning/prohibiting the existance/breeding of the American Pit Bull Terrier would be a damn shame. Many New Mexicans own these dogs that some label as "Killers", and only a select few may own dogs of the nature that some are labeling as "Bad dogs". Pit Bulls in New Mexico are as much of a tradition as green chile. Please stop the discrimination of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Pitbulls are wonderful, caring, loyal and loving dogs. Banning them would be a complete travesty. Punishment should be for the irresponsible owners, not these dogs and the people who love them.
yes banning anything is just a way of saying we dont think your responsable enough to own these so were are gonna be your parents and take them away.like watching my 2 year old niece and my 5 year old nephew ,she will come along and take his toy and they will fight and mom and dad will send them to bed and...you cant punish the 5 yo for the things the 2yo does.thank you
Please don't do this. "Ban the deed, not the breed." I own a Pit & she is friendly to other dogs & love childeren. It's the wrong type of people who train them to be aggressive or breed them towards aggression who need to be banned. Any dog can be made to be aggressive in the wrong hands. Pitbulls are just the current breed that people are against at this time. In the past it was German Shepherds, Dobermans & Rottweilers & they have not been banned or have had laws passed against them. Punish the irresponsibel dog owners not the dog.
Dear Senator, I am never amazed at how ignorant the general population can be about American Pit Bull Terriers. The media and miseducation has done horrible things for this breed. I too, was once uneducated. Now I own a VERY loving APBT. How many of these dogs have you met? Have you spent time with the families that are responsible, law abiding owners? Or have you, yourself also fallen into the category of being misinformed and uneducated? It would be a shame if you did not see the hundreds of loving APBT's that there are. I personally could contact about 250 people that would be proud to invite you to visit their home and share time with their dog. I am confused on how anyone could truly believe that banning the breeding of a breed would solve the current problems. It isn't responsible owners that are creating the problem. So, why should the responsible owners be punished??? This is another band-aid on a problem...so you are truly living up to the American way. I own two Pit Bulls. I have never had such loyal dogs. I am also a registered voter. We need to start looking at the source of the problems we are having with this breed which is the owners.

BSL does not nor ever has worked to reduce the number of dog bites in this country. The APBT is a noble breed with a proud history, and attacking its existence will do nothing to improve the safety of people from vicious animals.

I once read something when my first child was born. It was a poem that said Children learn what they live! I feel the same way about Pit's. If a Pit lives in hate it will learn hate. If a Pit is abused it will learn to abuse! If it is trained to fight...It will learn to fight!
So if we teach them love...They will learn love!
Try using some common sense dog bite prevention tactics and not knee-jerk, archaic massacring tactics. Address the problem of dangerous DOGS, not particular breeds, by addressing the very real issue of poor human ownership skills.

My husband has been breeding pitbulls for almost twenty years, and all of our pits are raised in our house with our whole family. They have always been raised with our kids and we have never ever had one bite anybody , its the irresponsable owners that nned to be punished for there animals. Not the dogs! we as parents are responsible for our kids actions , then why aren't we doing the same for our beloved pets??????? punish the owner not the breed!!!!!!!
