The APBT is an excellent breed that anyone would be proud to own. Unfortunatley, there are a lot of not so excellent people who give these animals a bad name. I can't believe that Sen. Beffort wants to pass such a narrow-minded, short-sighted bill that would probably cause more problems than it would intend to solve. Ms. Beffort obviously has no knowledge of this wonderful breed and apparently has no idea that dogs are just like human beings and will behave just as their parents teach them. I think there should be harsher punishments for irresponsible dog owners and animal abusers. Why should everyone suffer just because of the stupid people?
Having a ban on a breed of dog is the equivilant of segregation in humans. The personality of a dog is affected by the way they are treated by their owners in the same way a child will react when maltreated by their caretakers. Violence produces violence, maybe the senator should concentrate her efforts on the maltreatment of all animals instead of spreading prejudice against a single breed.
BSL is wrong and ignorant. This is the most lovable breed with the biggest heart imaginable. I will never understand these total idiots that want to ban them.
My APBT is nine months old with one diploma from Animal Friends Dog Obedience Course. Her father is a Certified Pet Therapy Dog that frequently visits Retirement Homes and Hospitals and her mother is a faithful companion to everyone she meets. This ban is a fine example of the ignorance of society and people like Sen. Beffort. The target of this ban should not be the breed, but rather the irresponsible owners that manipulate these poor animals and stigmatize the entire breed.
I have owned a pitbull for two years. She has recieved four obedience diplomas and we are going to work on the canine good citizen title. My fellow pitbull owner friends and I are outraged at this closed minded law that is trying to be passed by someone who is obviously ignorant to the breed.
Any dog can be made to be vicious only the uneducated (Sen. Sue Wilson Beffort) and ignorant are not aware of this. Sure hope Sue is more informed on issues such as aids, healthcare, and social security.
I am a owner of a seven week old pit puppy and have found nothing but joy in doing so . this is my second pit and wound not like to see this ban but in place. Its not a bad breed just the people that cant not understand hwta this breed is about.
Listen up peolpe i really think that you need to think twice about what you are about to do! Pitbulls are not the problem it is the oweners who do the harm to the these animals!!They always say that your animal will take after their owner well if the owners are cruel then what makes you think that they won't make their animals mean? yah so there the pitbulls are no the problem here it is the owners!! Now not all owners are like that!! If this dog has a good owner well then the dog will be just as good, they will obey, protect you, love you, and most of all will always be there no matter what!! Pitbulls count on humans what would they do if you took us away from them??!! This whole thing is really just a distraction off of what really needs to be taken! There is so much more important and more harmful things that could be and maybe result in better things!! You know i have a 7 week old pitbull, he is the sweetest thing that i have ever had!! His name is FATE!! His name means alot of things!! He was brought to me by FATE! it was like A miracle he almost died when i first got him, he was so wek and so small! but know he strong and so cute and playful!!! He is one of a kind. i have been waiting a long time to him and he is finally with me!! And i am sure not ready to give him up right now and wont for a long time!! punish the deed not the BREED!!
I have had a lot of different kinds of dogs, but none of them have been as lovable as my pitbull Dozer who was taken by the dog pound about three weeks ago here in Dexter, New Mexico. It should be up to people who are from (15-30) because if we want the dogs and ya'll older mother****ers take take our dogs away from us ya'll are all going to pay because we are the future and we should control what happens tommorow!!!!!!!!
There are a number of different ways to address this problem. This ban is not one of them.
By banning the breeding of these dogs you will be forcing underground breeding of these dogs. In doing this you compromise the production of sound mind and tempered dogs. Pedigrees will be ruined and production of more aggressive game bred dogs will flurish only adding to the dog aggressive population.
Try making owners of the APBT carry insurance on there dogs. This will seperate the true lovers of the breed from the underground breeder.
Maybe Sue Wilson should purchase a quality bred pit from me and find out what the breed is all about.

I am a pitbull owner and it saddens and angers me to know that you are wanting to ban such a wonderful breed. At one time, my husband and I were leary about the breed, until we did our own research and read so many wonderful stories about these dogs. We could have done,as your doing, turn our head and believe all the misleading information about these dogs. Our pit is our family member and I would'nt change that for the world! He is the most SWEETEST,LOVING,INTELLIGE NT,dog we have ever owned!! My two children LOVE and ADORE him as he does them!! All I ask,EDUCATE YOURSELF before passing a bill that would destroy such a wonderful breed!! Everyone wants to take life the easy way and believe what they hear, take the time to research this breed with an open mind and you too will have a change of heart!! The breed is NOT the problem,IGNORANT PEOPLE ARE!
The wonderful senator says that pits are responsible for 50% of reported dog bites but she forgets that most bites are not reported. i have 2 pitbulls and a shihtzu and my pits have never bitten my kids but my shihtzu has twice. i did not report the bite because it did not warrant reporting!! she need to reconsider the Chihuahua!!!
ok. they start with this... should we ban people from "BREEDING"??? It is upon the person(s) who raise the animal that determines what kind of animal they will have!! No different than a child! My pitbull is my baby and will always remain that way. He is my protector,my friend, my child. I will NEVER stand for this ban!! It is an OUTRAGE!!!!Educate oneself before coming forth and deciding to create a law!!! Ignorance can cause more harm than good. Being in a high position one should know this. Anything or Anyone can be "bad" given the wrong enviorment.I WILL ALWAYS HOLD THE PITBULL CLOSE TO MY HEART!! THIS BREED IS AN EXCEPTIONAL BREED THAT CANNOT BE BANNED!KEEP UP THE FIGHT PITBULL LOVERS!!!!WE KNOW HOW THEY ARE. THEY NEED US!!!
contact Sen. Sue Wilson Beffort. I have. I feel that it is outrageous that under this new bill we will have to carry $100,000 dollar insurance policies on our dogs and spend $250 per dog a year to "register" them. The law needs to be directed at the irresponsible dog owners, regardless of the breed. Supposedly we live in a free country, but yet now they are telling us what kind of pets we have a right to share our lives with. The APBT is a loyal and trustworthy companion that has just as much right to live as the next dog. Those of us that LOVE our dogs and make them members of our families are the only ones that will be punished with this law. The irresponsible owners won't care, they will just move on to another breed. Punish the deed NOT the breed.
you guys cant be blaming the breed for some irresposible owner that doesnt know how to raise a dog. any breed of dog can grow up to be tha same or more agressive than a pitbull.
you guys cant be blaming the breed for some irresposible owner that doesnt know how to raise a dog. any breed of dog can grow up to be tha same or more agressive than a pitbull.
If u ban the pitbulls all the dog fighters are going to do is find a different breed to fight....after a while all the dogs are going to be banned.......punish the deed not the breed
Ms Beffort has not taken a balanced position on this issue. I support laws to protect the public from proven vicious animals, but not breed specific legislation resulting in felony convictions of pit bull owners whose animal has bitten once. These folks would be permanently damaged by possibly legitimate use of a dog to protect their own life or property. This legislation has compassion only for the very few people ever bitten in this state by a dog that is certifiably a Pit Bull. Most dogs in Valencia county that look like they have Pit Bull heritage are actually mixed breed. How can this breed specific legislation be applied in the more common case that an animal looks like it might be a Pit Bull cross, but there are no papers on the dog. The law is just not an effective approach to the problem of vicious biters. If it is passed, it will be next to impossible to enforce after the first court cases are lost by local authorities. The state should focus on more important issues like controlling drunk drivers.
My dogs our very much a part of my family. My family's freedom to live in any state I choose should not be limited by a ban. I will not be forced to reduce my family by any member.
We are the owners of two red nosed pits, they are loyal, loving, playful and fun. It is not the breed it is how they are raised by the owner. We recently moved from New Mexico, I did see a lot of Pit Bulls that are mistreated by their owners. The owners chain them in the back yard sometimes no water or food, but most of all no affection or attention from the owner, only beatings with sticks for barking by trying to get attention for food and water. In some cases in New Mexico I was told that if they do not show signs of aggression at an early age they are killed. Pit Bull owners need to be very selective about who they sale their dogs to.
I have been around the Ameican Pitbull Terrior my entire life. I think that any ban is a racist act to this breed. If a white guy with blue eyes attacked someone(even though his retard owner/parents raised him that way) would you ban blue eyed white guys? Sounds like Hitler is making a comeback...
I have years of experience owning and breading the American Pit Bull Terrier. I believe that this bill to band the future of the AMERICAN Pit Bull Terrier in New Mexico comes from only the negative hype and publicity of the breed and shows that the New Mexico State Sen. Sue Wilson Beffort has no knowledge of the history of the “Pit Bull” and what the American Pit Bull is today in the hands of responsible owners. This bread is naturally loyal, loving, affectionate, caring, intelligent, trustworthy and even sometimes clownish. The APBT is not born with aggression but is instead taught this characteristic by ignorant, oblivious, irresponsible owners. Sue Wilson has no right to give a particular bread of dog a bad name and try to hang it. This bill is aimed in the wrong direction and should be focused on the owners, of any K-9 breed, who instill negative characteristics into their dogs that may pose a threat to humans or other animals. I am a detention officer and working with criminals on a daily basis I have learned that anything could be used in a negative manner when in the hands of a immoral sinful minded person. My firm believe is that the American Pit Bull should not be stereotyped into something negative and be banned altogether in our wonderful land of enchantment.
I am 25 years old and have been around dogs all of my life, mostly pitbulls. None that have ever been vicious or shown aggresion. My boyfriend and i have three daughters and also 4 family pitbulls. My yongest daughter is a three years old and her best friend is our family pit bull Buzz. I think the people that are responisble for this bill should not be wasting there time on issues like family pets but instead on things that really cause injuries and deaths. Why don't they get together to try and stop something that is vicousous and life threatining like guns. I for one have never heard of a friendly gun, have you?
Dear State Sen Beffort: As a NMHU Alum, and former resident of your state, I'm against your proposed bill because I think its "Breed-Specific," AND unconstitutional.
Respectfully,

The people that are doing this are not very smart they dont now that the pitbull has been and always will be part us history let it live on to our young ones so that they can also enjoy this wonderful breed
Never heard of anything so ridiculous. Is it true that politians in New Mexico have time to dream up issues in order to be heard? Pit Bulls have always been the victim in human efforts to control them and own them. Many people are at fault regarding the disposition of the Pit Bull...a mere dog? Improve your approach in helping people not eliminating man's best friend.
it is all to easy to blame the breed and not the human error and ignorance of this special breed of dog. good luck and i hope ypu win your petiton. a cain, norfolk virginia
Nowadays, we blame the parents for not raising their kids right. Why don't we blame irresponsible pitbull owners for not raising their dog right? It's a dog, and dogs like children, only know what we teach them. Punish The Deed, Not The Breed!
Senator Beffort, what I have to say you have already heard. I would just like for you to reconcider and allow this this breed in our state. All of the people I know have had a bad experience with a certain type of dog, including myself, and they have been with many breeds other than pitbulls. Even the vet's will tell you that they get bit more by chihuahua's than any other breed. Maybe an alternative would be harsher laws on individuals that do not have respect for human life aswell as the canine breeds.
the only dog i've ever been bit by was an ausralian cattle dog. i will admit that there are a lot of ignorant pit bull owners out there. for some reason or another these owners feel that this dog is a status symbol in today's society. they figure "i'm a tough guy so my dog has to be tough like me." this is when the cycle of improper socialization begins. if you were to round up a group of these ignorant owners and ask them why they like this breed you would probably get the ever popular, and ignorant," i don't know, they're just cool." there is no denying that pit bull is cool looking dog but that should not be the only reason for owning one of these dogs. their undying devotion to their family is an aset that overlooked all too often. the pit bull, if socialized properly, will not go looking for trouble but if the situation arises the pit bull will defend it's family, no question asked. Senator Beffort, have you ever been in the presence of a well socialized pit bull? i bet the answer is a resounding NO. the individuals that need prosecution in this matter are the ignorant owners, not the dogs.
We need to be signing a petition to get Sen. Sue Wilson out of office. She is just trying to start something to get her name out there for her political career.
hi i am from norway where yhis breed is already is baned, but som people stil want a pit bull but for fighting... and i know that this breed has alot false infomation here in norway.. banning onely makes it worse for the pit bull, dont ban the dog ban the people
I have 2 young children and their best friends are my 5 pits, they would give there lifes for them and I would give mine for them if they are ban I hope your ready to turn every pitbull owner in to a criminal because thats what ill become cause I WILL NEVER GIVE MY FAMILY UP OF LET THEM DOWN I hope you understand my passion for this beautful breed, may GOD help up us and help those to understand. www.landofentrapmentkenne ls.com
this is a beautiful, intelligent breed. An APBT is the definition of mans best FRIEND it angers me that people can be so ignorrent about the breed as people who LOVE the APBT would say punish the deed not the breed. PLEASE SUE WILSON DO NOT TAKE THE APBT AWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO LOVE IT A CHIHUAHA IS MORE LIKELY TO ATTACK A HUMAN PLEASE LEARN ABOUT THE BREED
THE KEY WORD HERE IS IGNORANCE, PEOPLE THAT DONT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT OUR BREED ARE THE ONES THAT WANT THEM GONE. THEY DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT A PITBULL IS OR LOOKS LIKE IF ASKED. EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT. BANS ARE NOT GOING TO CONTROLL THIS PROBLEM, RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP AND RESPONSIBLE BREEDING ARE WHAT IS GOING TO KEEP OUR DOGS ALIVE BECAUSE THEYRE WORTH MORE THAN $50 AT YOUR LOCAL FLEA MARKET OR LOCAL GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT.
all i got to say is what happened to democracy? apbt's don't kill, people do! i have been breeding for over six years and i had never had a problem! as a dogman you have to be responsible for your dogs, punish the un-responsible not the dogs!!!!! my 10 year old duaghter has a ball with all my dogs, never had a problem but come near her while she's out there and see what happends? damb, now thats security! society and the government are the real enemy's! what happened to democracy? don't band this beutiful specimen AND DON'T DARE COME TO MY STATE!!!!! jorge "HARDGAME" kennels of WEST TEXAS el paso
Dogs are like people, if a person influeces a dog to be a menace, that individual needs to pay. Not the entire breed. this is america. banning the breed is just another form of social cleansing. what's next, after this breed, American bulldog, rottweiler, great danes, dalmations, WHAT??????
APBT's can be terrific pets. In fact, the vast majority of them are harmless. Any dog, when provoked or mistreated can become dangerous. Punishing irresponsible owners is a far better solution than banning a breed.
TRIBUTE TO THE AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER
YOU MADE ME WHAT I AM TODAY, COURAGE AT IT'S BEST
YOU WANTED ME TO KNOW NO FEAR, A CUT ABOVE THE REST.
NOT ONLY DID I MASTER THAT, I'VE THROWN IN LOYALTY TOO.
LOOK PAST MY EYES, INTO MY SOUL, AND KNOW I'D DIE FOR YOU.
I'LL WATCH YOUR KIDS, PROTECT YOUR HOME, YOUR PRAISE WILL BE MY CROWN.
ASK WHAT YOU WILL, I'LL DO MY BEST, TO NEVER LET YOU DOWN.
BUT SOME OF YOU DON'T LIKE ME, ALTHOUGH I DON'T KNOW WHY.
THE ONLY THING I AM GUILTY OF IS COURAGE, LOVE AND TRY.
BUT STILL THEY WANT TO SEE ME GO; THEY WANT MY BREED TO END.
WILL I SEE YOU SITTING IDLY BY; YOU, WHOM I CALL MY FRIEND?
YOU MADE ME WHAT I AM TODAY; YOU NEVER SAW ME WAIVER.
I'VE DONE MY BEST TO KEEP YOU SAFE; WILL YOU RETURN THE FAVOR?

Don't ban the APBT. The APBT is a great dog. Punish the deed NOT the breed.
We should be able to own and bred any dog we choose to in America. Harsher laws shoud be enforced on irrespnsible dog owners and animal abusers. There are NO bad breeds only bad owners. The pitbull dogs are always getting a bad rap about biting someone. When a lot of the times it was a peson who was taunting the dog. bit for taunting or invading the animals area i say they deserved it.
Irresponsible ownership of any breed should be the focus of the State. Projecting onto one certain breed the actions of people who arent responsible pet owners is a travesty. The sensible solution to any problems with loose dogs is to enforce leash laws. If dogs arent lose, there isnt really an issue, is there? This includes ALL dogs. To allow media-hype and over-zealous uninformed people create laws restricted and banning one breed is nonsensical, and is not a workable solution.
I do not own a pitbull. I have only limited expericence in interacting with them. But I do not believe any breed should be persecuted for the actions (or lack thereof) of their irresponsible owners. It is just a shame to blame the breed.
I own two apbts my oldest is a 14month old 87lb lap dog. These dogs are no more dangerous then a poodle. Although I live in Georgia I dont want to see this breed banned anywhere. What your state needs is harsher laws on dogfighting punish the people who abuse these poor dogs and make them fight. Don't punish the dog or the people who love them.
PUNISH THE DEED - NOT THE BREED!!
THERE ARE NO BAD DOGS - JUST IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS!
THE APBT IS A WONDERFUL BREED. IT IS A SHAME THAT PEOPLE DO NOT TAKE TIME TO EDUCATE THEIRSELVES!!
