i personally own two male american pitbulls and they are the best dogs ive ever owned they have shown nothing but love, loyalty and affection to me my dogs would die for me if someone layed a hand on me...other breed of dogs? im not so sure they would do the same they love people and are just like any other breed of dog who wants to love and be loved its a shame some people have to ruin the rep of the apbt i get a lot of crap from people about owning one but its pure ignorance and i think they are the ones missing out i have found it very hard to find a apartment to accept my dogs and me but i would have a dozen pitbulls if i could this breed has won my heart a million times over please dont ban this breed!!!!! thank you!
once again, a dumb idea that will not work, kind of like how bush is invading iraq, and not hunting osama bin laden, who is the real threat. If you want to stop bad animal behavior, or make someone suffer the consequences, it should be the people responsible for raising the animals, and you should take steps to eliminate irresponsible owners. If your method of banning one breed were taken to banning one type of gun, it would not help the homicide rate in the u.s.the problem is people, not animals.
Pitbulls are very loveable dogs. I have three children and two pitbulls, and they are great around my children. It is all how they are raised, the breed should not be punished due to cruel people in the world, that train them to do bad things.
wow. Have you ever met a house pitt? Not a dog raised outside, with uncaring owners, I mean with a loving family? It is not fair. I love my dog. He has never done anything wrong to anyone, and I would never allow him to. It is just not fair for anyone to call my dog a vicious animal. He isnt. And all Black People are not blind at night.
Any breed of dog can be vicious if raised badly; pit bulls are no exception but they are not the only breed. Why not concentrate on the owners, whose responsibility it is to raise them? Enforce existing laws instead of trying to enact new ones that single out specific breeds. If this law is enacted, which breed is next?
we the citizens of the United States have to own any breed of dogs we choose. it is our freedom and NO ONE has the right to prohibit that right. Punish the deed NOT the breed!!!
Obviously Sen. Sue Wilson Beffort has found her soap-box to be heard from, regardless of the outcome. Her ignorant stand on this issue only reflects the deeper flaws in her character. Such a closed-minded view was just what Hitler needed to do his terrible deeds.
I own two pitbulls right now and they are two of the best and kindest dogs ive ever had, my mom didnt like the idea of me getting them at first because she thought that they would hurt my little brother, now that i have them brother plays with them all the time, and my mom loves pit. Its not the dog thats bad its the owners!
In my life I've owned three pitbulls, and they have been the three most caring and loyal dogs I've ever owned. In fact as I type this, my buddy Rex is sleeping at my feet where he stays all day long, right at my side. I was born and raised in New Mexico. on September 3 of 2001 I enlisted in the United States Army. Where I have served proudly, and faught in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom 1. When I joined the Army it was to fight for the Freedom that I enjoy everyday! Now I find out that that freedom only applies to me if I don't have my best-friend/dog! I am sickened by the fact that when I finish my service to my country. I wont be welcome in my home state, because if my best-friend/dog is not welcome, nither am I!
This is ludicrous..What's with you Sen. have nothing to do one Suday Morning? Many breeds can be trained to be mean, why condemn a certain one? Here's any idea, how about focusing on schools, instead of wasting time and paper picking out a breed of dog to beat up on, to make yourself look good to some? And still another, how about taking a closer look at SOME of the owners of this breed and how they may be treating them!
My family owns 2 pitts and they are the most loving loyal doge I have ever owned. I have two children who love their pets very much. Its not the breed of the dog that is dangerous its the person who is raising it. Animals are like children if you raise them with love and care they will show love care and loyaty.
I am a pitbull owner and breeder. And I would like to say that I have personally never had any issues with any of my pits. I own 2 pits myself, a male and female, and they are nothing but loving and playful with everyone they have come in contact with. I totally agree with Diane, they are only as mean and careless as thier owners are. Any dog that is mistreated, neglected or trained to attack and will do so. I would never trade my pit bull for any other breed of dog.
it is not very smart to think that a certain breed of dog can be so terrible! i will admit i was scared of pitts because of all the attacks but then i got my baby and she is the best dog i could have ever asked for and i will never get anything but pitts!!! they are only as bad as thier careless owners you should get one and find out how loving they really are before you pass any judgement!!!
When will it all end? I would encourage the Honorable Senator for New Mexico to attend a show ring for the American Pitbull Terrier. It must so easy to sit in and Mahogany laiden office and draft bills that cause harm to entire breed. I bet Senator Strom Thurmond would have loved to have the segregation laws continued as a means to promote and destroy a civilized world. The answer here is not to eliminate an entire breed of animal because of the heresy of a few terrible people. Does the Senator think the real answer is to outlaw the dogs. Or does she not realize that as it now only the OUTLAWS are raising thier dogs to be aggressive. Does the Senator not also realize all dogs are pack hunters and when allowed will do so, no matter the breed. I ask you Senator Beffort would the more logical route be the banning of the human being who trains his or her dogs to be so aggressive it cannot go to a vet for care. Humans are the ruin of the world, yet here we blame an animal that is a proud part of the American Heritage. Maybe we should treat all animals like God did, even the Ark carried two of every animal. You know man has always quipped to be smarter than God. I urge you to be the Senator for your state that realizes the harm that will come from such a ban and to also see how badly State and Federal Laws need attention. A person who owns any dog that attacks without prevocation has trained the dog to do so and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. A dog will no more attack a human unprovoked without training to do so, than a gun will shoot a perons locked in a drawer with no ammunition. This must end, we all AMERICANS must unite to save an entire breed before all dogs are next.
You Should spend more time worrying about issues that really matter to New Mexicans such as Education, and why we have one of the lowest literacy rates in the United States, and also why we have one of the highest Rape rates per capita in the USA. We didnt vote for you to waste our tax payers time, money , and resources on a silly issue like banning a specific breed of dog. Do your research and you will see who is the vicious one in this case. The ignorant dog owners who need to take responsibilty of their animals. Punish the deed not the breed.
This petition is not so much directed at the continuance of breeding these dogs, as it is at the question of what will be done with the dogs arriving after June 2005.
I received a Pitbull as a gift. I was sceptacle about keeping him at first because of things I had heard on TV or read in the newspaper and so forth. But of course all you hear in the news is the bad stuff. Now that I have taken the time to educate myself about the breed along with raising my own, I have grown very attatched to my Pitbull. I am raising him as an indoor dog and he is the most gentle, lovable dog and even likes to act like a clown sometimes. I also have a Chihuahua. My chihuahua gets aggressive with my pitbull and still he remains gentle as can be! . . . Ooops I should not have said my chihuahua is agressive . . . you might think about banning them too. Obviously you have too much time on your hands to be going after innocent animals instead of the irresponsible owners. GET A GRIP!! Punish the deed NOT the breed.
This is perhaps the most ridiculous law I have read. Pass laws on something worth your time like harsher penalties for animal abusers.
Senator, your ability of logic is obviously lacking. Put your time into laws that would have positive benefits and outcomes for New Mexico.
My mother raised champion Rottweilers. She would have extensive tests given to the people that were interested in buying a puppy. Instead of trying to make money of of irresponsible people. ($1000 registration fee) They should test people for responsibility and care of pets. Please reconsider this. It will make alot more people unhappy than people scared of these dogs.
ANY breed of dog can be dangerous when not properly raised. You're trying to single out breeds of dogs that are harmful rather than the irresponsible owners. The idea of muzzling a dog or locking him up in a run is the exact kind of inhumane treatment that makes for a harmful dog. We need to come up with a more effective solution rather than a quick fix. I am an owner of a pitbull one that was raised properly. He is kind, obedient and loyal. In fact, the only incident I've experienced with a dog attack was a bite from a Yorkshire Terrier. A small breed of dog that is not considered a "danger."
Sen. have you ever been around a pit bull, or our you basing your info. on what others say. Find out for yourself. Meet my daughters pit. I guarentee you will love her.
my friends and family travel to New Mexico all the time. We'd be happy to go to another state to conduct our business, go shopping etc. This is an outrage!!
Like I am sure you have heard it's not the Ptbull itself that is violent is the owner that raised them that way. And as for them attacking....they attach when they are provoked, just like any other animal. I know many people woth Pitbulls and I am convinced they are very loving animals. They are playful and very loyal to their owners. Taking these aminals from their owners is simply NOT RIGHT!!!!!
I own a pit and the only danger my dog presents is possible licking you to death because he loves people so much!! Irresponsible people raise irresponsible dogs--no matter what the breed. In this country irresponsibility sometimes constitues corporal punishment...maybe this should be the case with irresponsible pet owners. What kind of senator threaten to take away the rights of all citizens over the actions of a few???
