once again, a dumb idea that will not work, kind of like how bush is invading iraq, and not hunting osama bin laden, who is the real threat. If you want to stop bad animal behavior, or make someone suffer the consequences, it should be the people responsible for raising the animals, and you should take steps to eliminate irresponsible owners. If your method of banning one breed were taken to banning one type of gun, it would not help the homicide rate in the u.s.the problem is people, not animals.

Any breed of dog can be vicious if raised badly; pit bulls are no exception but they are not the only breed. Why not concentrate on the owners, whose responsibility it is to raise them? Enforce existing laws instead of trying to enact new ones that single out specific breeds. If this law is enacted, which breed is next?

In my life I've owned three pitbulls, and they have been the three most caring and loyal dogs I've ever owned. In fact as I type this, my buddy Rex is sleeping at my feet where he stays all day long, right at my side. I was born and raised in New Mexico. on September 3 of 2001 I enlisted in the United States Army. Where I have served proudly, and faught in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom 1. When I joined the Army it was to fight for the Freedom that I enjoy everyday! Now I find out that that freedom only applies to me if I don't have my best-friend/dog! I am sickened by the fact that when I finish my service to my country. I wont be welcome in my home state, because if my best-friend/dog is not welcome, nither am I!

Here's any idea, how about focusing on schools, instead of wasting time and paper picking out a breed of dog to beat up on, to make yourself look good to some? And still another, how about taking a closer look at SOME of the owners of this breed and how they may be treating them!

I am a pitbull owner and breeder. And I would like to say that I have personally never had any issues with any of my pits. I own 2 pits myself, a male and female, and they are nothing but loving and playful with everyone they have come in contact with. I totally agree with Diane, they are only as mean and careless as thier owners are. Any dog that is mistreated, neglected or trained to attack and will do so. I would never trade my pit bull for any other breed of dog.

When will it all end? I would encourage the Honorable Senator for New Mexico to attend a show ring for the American Pitbull Terrier. It must so easy to sit in and Mahogany laiden office and draft bills that cause harm to entire breed. I bet Senator Strom Thurmond would have loved to have the segregation laws continued as a means to promote and destroy a civilized world. The answer here is not to eliminate an entire breed of animal because of the heresy of a few terrible people. Does the Senator think the real answer is to outlaw the dogs. Or does she not realize that as it now only the OUTLAWS are raising thier dogs to be aggressive. Does the Senator not also realize all dogs are pack hunters and when allowed will do so, no matter the breed. I ask you Senator Beffort would the more logical route be the banning of the human being who trains his or her dogs to be so aggressive it cannot go to a vet for care. Humans are the ruin of the world, yet here we blame an animal that is a proud part of the American Heritage. Maybe we should treat all animals like God did, even the Ark carried two of every animal. You know man has always quipped to be smarter than God. I urge you to be the Senator for your state that realizes the harm that will come from such a ban and to also see how badly State and Federal Laws need attention. A person who owns any dog that attacks without prevocation has trained the dog to do so and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. A dog will no more attack a human unprovoked without training to do so, than a gun will shoot a perons locked in a drawer with no ammunition. This must end, we all AMERICANS must unite to save an entire breed before all dogs are next.

We didnt vote for you to waste our tax payers time, money , and resources on a silly issue like banning a specific breed of dog. Do your research and you will see who is the vicious one in this case. The ignorant dog owners who need to take responsibilty of their animals. Punish the deed not the breed.

I received a Pitbull as a gift. I was sceptacle about keeping him at first because of things I had heard on TV or read in the newspaper and so forth. But of course all you hear in the news is the bad stuff. Now that I have taken the time to educate myself about the breed along with raising my own, I have grown very attatched to my Pitbull. I am raising him as an indoor dog and he is the most gentle, lovable dog and even likes to act like a clown sometimes. I also have a Chihuahua. My chihuahua gets aggressive with my pitbull and still he remains gentle as can be! . . . Ooops I should not have said my chihuahua is agressive . . . you might think about banning them too. Obviously you have too much time on your hands to be going after innocent animals instead of the irresponsible owners. GET A GRIP!! Punish the deed NOT the breed.

ANY breed of dog can be dangerous when not properly raised. You're trying to single out breeds of dogs that are harmful rather than the irresponsible owners. The idea of muzzling a dog or locking him up in a run is the exact kind of inhumane treatment that makes for a harmful dog. We need to come up with a more effective solution rather than a quick fix. I am an owner of a pitbull one that was raised properly. He is kind, obedient and loyal. In fact, the only incident I've experienced with a dog attack was a bite from a Yorkshire Terrier. A small breed of dog that is not considered a "danger."
