Augustus Saint-Gaudens playground at 2nd Avenue and 20th Street is frequently used by adults who are unaccompanied by children. These adults, some of whom appear mentally ill, use the playground, its bathrooms and its sprinklers for all-day loitering, bathing and clothes washing. There have been instances of INDECENT EXPOSURE, CURSING AT CHILDREN and adults including Parks workers, and other inappropriate or threatening behavior. The law states that, unlike public PARKS, public PLAYGROUNDS are for children and their caregivers ONLY.

Please sign this petition to be given to police at the 13th Precinct and our local representatives at an upcoming Community Board 6 meeting.

We request that the Police and the Parks Department enforce the law by:
(1) Regularly patrolling the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Playground, asking adults unaccompanied by children to LEAVE THE PLAYGROUND immediately;
(2) explaining to these adults that they are NOT ALLOWED TO RETURN and
(3) offering them AN ALTERNATIVE such as a Public Park (not playground), and Peter’s Place on 23rd St. for bathing.

I have lived in this neighborhood for 8 years and this has always been a problem. I do not feel safe letting my children run around in the playground and my older child is scared of the people who come in since she was yelled at and chased on one occasion. The bathrooms are always occupied and it is just not a safe situation.
