Leave the Pledge the way it is! And if you dont like it ... leave. Because we say "god bless you" when you sneeze "in God we trust" is on our money. Our founding fathers believed in God and that is why we should keep it that way!

How can any of you expect others to take your opinions seriously if you can't express them without using profanity and insulting each other? I acknowledge your right to speak whatever opinions you have and to use whatever words you would like, but I also have the right to think you are less intelligent than me because you can't express your opinions respectfully. That being said, I do not believe that the Pledge of Allegiance should be obligatory. If we live in a "free" country, that means we have the freedom not to pledge ourselves to a flag or a God or anything else if we don't want to. Doesn't requiring people to pledge loyalty to a political entity just reek of fascism? Heil America, Heil the Flag. I pledge allegiance to my family and friends, and to the education of the hundreds of students I have taught and will teach in my lifetime. I will show them that one can express strong opinions WITHOUT calling their opponents cunts and telling them to fuck off. I am not offended by profanity, but I am offended by stupidity.

Sarah -- and everybody else...THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is CHRISTIAN!! This statement is corroborated by numbers, by tradition, and by culture. Ask yourself...does the FEDERAL/STATE/CITY governments of this country shut down for Passover? For Hannakah? For Yom Kippur? What about significant Muslim or Kwanzaa holidays? NO! Do most Americans even know when a Jewish holiday or Mulim holiday is being celebrated? NO! But they do shut down for CHRISTMAS... Israel, howver, is indeed a Jewish country. Iran is indeed a Muslim country. Due to the historical structure of the modern history of America, the country is rooted in Christianity (hint: what religion was most of our founders?). Also, ask yourself what would become of the American economy if Christian culture were not celebrated. Boy, the fourth quarter economic statistics sure would look somnolent.

Mallory's still a cock-smoking cunt said 12/05/05, 3:34 am (verified)
Wah. Mallory is all mad because people are speaking out against her and her Bible-beating, swastika-wearing Jesus freaks. I don't mind if you're Christian. You can believe what the fuck you want. However, when you say that this nation should follow the majority rules when it comes to religion, then you can go straight to Hell and suck Satan's fat cock. This pledge is a disgrace to our nation. It's meaningless enough alone, but to add the words "under God" to it just makes it even worse because now the official version is a recognition of God. Fuck that. It should be areligious with no mention of God or religion at all. If you pussies can't handle that, then go live in Saudia Arabia where you HAVE to follow the main religion and if you don't you are condemned, even if not by incarcaration. This is the "Land of the Free" and it should not make any mention of religion except that people have the right to practice it as they see fit. So fuck you, Mallory and go burn in Hell, bitch.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Massachusetts educator who headed a committee of civic leaders that was in charge of planning Columbus Day celebration to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. The Pledge was a statement of national principle emphasizing the post-Civil War themes of the permanence of the American union. On Columbus Day 1892, several million schoolchildren across the nation recited Bellamy’s pledge: “I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” It was a secular oath, with no mention of God or religion, nor as it gained popularity did anyone, as far as is known, complain that the pledge was excessively secular. It soon became customary for children across the nation to recite the pledge at the beginning of the school day. There was some concern, however, that the words “my flag” might cause confusion among the large numbers of immigrants who were coming to America in the early years of the century. Such words, it was feared, might unwittingly encourage loyalty to the various immigrant homelands. In 1924, therefore, the National Flag Conference approved a slight change of wording in the pledge to clarify that reference. Now the pledge read: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” The Pledge of Allegiance continued to grow in popularity after this alteration. Many sates enacted legislation to require the recitation of the pledge in public schools. It received official recognition in 1942 when Congress included the pledge in the U.S. Flag Code. In 1943, the Jehovah’s Witnesses challenged the mandatory recitation of the pledge in public schools. IN a landmark case, the Supreme Court ruled that governments could not force students to participate in the flag salute against their will or con

I totally agree with B. king, but that isn't quite the original pledge, under god was added in 1954, but from 1892 up until 1924 "the united states of america" was simply "my flag"

The United States of America, these words are synonymous with one thing, freedom. Freedom is what defines America and Americans as a whole. That was the point back in 1783 when our fore-fathers ratified the document that would set our nation apart from any country before it. That document, along with the amendments that followed it, defines the United States as a nation, and as a people. Freedom comes in many shapes and forms; whether it be freedom of speech, freedom from persecution, or more specific freedoms like the freedom of religion, guaranteed by the first amendment of the constitution. While it may be true that the first Americans were Christian pilgrims, and many use this fact to argue that America is a Christian nation as it was founded by Christian puritans; one must not forget that the pilgrims came in search of religious freedom and freedom from persecution for their protestant faith. The “Establishment Clause” of the First Amendment clearly dismisses the view of the United States as a Christian nation by preventing the establishment of a national church or official religion. This same phrase limits governmental interference with or assistance to any religious organization and secures the freedom of religion for all American citizens. Despite these provisions by our fore-fathers to ensure that our nation shows no preference towards any particular religion, every morning schoolchildren throughout the United States pledge allegiance to a nation that is “Under God”.

I fully support this petition. The pledge should be left the way it was originally written, and we should resist all calls by special interest groups to alter the pledge to better suit their ideals. And for those of you who have short attention spans, here's the original pledge, before the special interests got ahold of it. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The appearance of the words “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance directly conflicts with the beliefs that this nation was founded on and with the constitution of the United States.

Im not going to classify myself as a christian or any other religion. I just feel that this is a free country and that even though we were found under god. No one lives under god. there is nothing that says we have to live under god. It affends people if its there..and its fine if it aint there.
