I support this petition. Only because i am angry that i got caught speeding and wish i didnt have to pay the fine. i think police need to slow down and neglect the public when they respond to calls.
stop complaining. look at the stats, how many wrecks involve police? how many involve civilians? if its true that the police are the true speeders, shouldnt they be involved in more accidents? the fact of the matter is they are skilled drivers and "public SAFTEY officials" give them a break.
don't call the cops if you dant want them to come. or better yet,,,, when you call them , hope they take their sweet a$$ time to get to you so you can maintain your point about the speed
local police department policy usually restricts running code (lights/siren) unless responding to a call involving danger to the person. 911 hang-ups, domestic violence, fights, most wrecks, DUI calls, and most situations where the caller NEEDS the police, they cannot use lights/siren. wouldnt you still want them to respond as quickly as possible?
I support this petition. i had a friend recently hit by a speeding cop. the witnesses at the seen say one second you see a clear road the next you see a cop smacking her. the cop was going fast enough to hit her and through her 50 ft from impact.she is in critacal condition and it has been 6 days since the incodent.
I support this petition. On Saturday, September 20 2008, my husband was pulled over by a police officer clearly abusing his power. The offense descriptions claim he was following my husband, but in fact the opposite was true until we broke off into the HOV lane. This is a market shortcut compared to the regular on ramp. We could see the officer speeding around the ramp to intercept us. He claims he paced us doing 87 miles per hour. If that were true, he would have had to been going at least 120 to be able to intercept us where he did. Even at the speed limit of 55, he would have had to go at least 82 to intercept us. This is a cowboy cop.
I support this petition. I have witnessed this too many times in my small municipality where the Police think themselves exempt from the same laws they are sworn to uphold. This should also include exhibition of acceleration as well.
Most jurisdictions have a speeding exemption for officers on duty. It may seem as though they are goofing around, but most often they are going to a call. the reason for no lights & siren ? The way the public react to the lights & siren is sometimes worse than not using them. Whatever gets the officer to the accident, the break in, the baby not breathing..what exactly were you doing while he was doing that? stop complaining and support your local police. If you feel an officer is acting unprofessionally call the police and ask for internal affairs.
I have complaint to State Patrol in GA that was investigated, officer admitted doing over 55 mph in 35 mph SCHOOL ZONE, and he got 'verbal counseling' by supervisor. OUTRAGEOUS!!
I had a Sheriff's Deputy pull up in my driveway a few seconds after I had. When I was getting my groceries and briefcase out (under my carport) I saw him but figured he was here to ask about the neighbor they had been watching. He said
I am extremely angry that they get to make our roads American Autobahn for them but not for us and that is not fair. Police are always speeding, yet never fined, meanwhile Us civilians and military personal are fined. Rule of Law states no man is above the law no matter what their status is.
followed a speeding speed camera van 2 years ago, complained and then we were intimidated by police officers (including a senior one) turning up on our doorstep into dropping the complaint. Throughout, we were given conflicting information (the van isn't one of ours/ it is but the driver can't be located/the matter will be dealt with internally and your continued involvement will cause you more hassle)I now have utter comtempt for this bunch of law-breaking bully boys
I signing this but it will have little effect because other police aren't going to ticket other police. It a brotherhood and they feel they are above the law. It just makes me so sick.
Why not choose a city and obtain video evidence? Just strap a camcorder inside your car and record your limit along with the police speeding past you. There must also be a wealth of video evidence from city cameras of reckless driving by police.

76535473 drivers caught speeding!!! Zero robbers caught. The filth are too lazy to catch real criminals...They need Crimewatch, Crimestoppers, etc to catch anyone.

Best thing to do is get car-cams and record these speeding pigs. Pigs like to lie when it suits them so you can use this evidence against them!!! Do not bother with the IPCC as they will simply pass it on to the DPS who are filth and are only interested in looking after their own. The DPS will fob you off with some crap. Best thing to do is post those speeding pigs on the internet and if you can, Name and shame those pigs. Find out their home addresses and post them too.
It use to be that cops always drove the speed limit. That was part of what earned our respect. Now, they are always speeding but what's worse it when they are off duty they drive even worse. Everyone's heard the threat that if we don't let them speed when they want to they won't speed when you call them in an emergence. Fact is, they should be held to high standards which is not only how it should be but would also regain a little of the respect they have lost.

Police officers should obey the very laws they enforce. I have on several occasions followed police officers in excess of 100mph going to lunch. Police officers abuse their authority more often than not. They are supposed to set an example. I personally despise police officers. They believe they are somehow superior and above the law. Police officers get 2 hours worth of driving training...I myself have an SCCA license...does this mean I can speed? Absolutely not....and I have been more thoroughly trained than police to drive a vehicle at high speeds.
Police are enforcers of the law; they should not be above it. If exceptions are made for police, then it sends drivers the message that the laws are merely there to control drivers and are not there for safety.. because obviouly police have other drivers' safety in mind.. yeah right..
And to police being specially trained.. even if I were to take a driving course in driving at high speeds safely, I would still get pulled over for a ticket, despite showing them my certificate proving I am a safe driver in all conditions...
I support this petition as well as law enforcement officers. but the fact still stands, as a gwinnett police officers nearly striking me by going around my vehicle as I was merging into the left turning lane. No lights , No siren. Officer then proceeded to accelerate over 90 mph in a residential 45mph zone without any lights or siren. If he is responding to back an officer up or a call, he may kill those he has sworn to protect. You can respond in stealth by using emergency lights without sirens. I think they need to reveiw their department SOP regarding to responding to calls. Another roswell police officer shot past at the speed of 80-90mph early in the morning, 4 miles down the road his cruiser was at Quicktrip and he was at the counter drinking coffee. I assume he was responding to a coffee theft, yeah? But, you cannot lump every police officer with the ones that takes advantage of their authority. I was please to over hear a forsyth county sgt instructing a deputy to slow down on Hwy 400 after the deputy informed the SGT he was not responding to a call.

My Police story:
I was traveling down a road doing the exact speed limit, 25 MPH, at night and nobody else on the road. Suddenly about 200 feet behind me a car turned onto the same road I was on and accellerated probably as fast as their car was able to accellerate until they were traveling about double the speed-limit or higher, I was traveling 25 MPH and they traveled the same distance I did in about half the time or less. During this time the car is just headlights, looking like any other car. No siren No flashers.
I assumed it was an obvious drunk and was about to pull off the road to not be in the way when finally I see (watching very intently duh it was about to crash into me #!%$) that the car finally brakes -- when it is already upon my bumper. The car then trails me within a car-length no siren no flashers looking like any ordinary car and I figured it is a drunk with a few braincells still operating without being inebriated that he managed to stop just in time from smashing my rear end.
I come upon the end of the road and turn hoping the drunk will not follow me, it turns out the drunk does indeed turn and follow after me and then about 30 seconds down the next road, and that drunk pulls me over. It turns out that drunk was a police officer who wanted to stop me because I dropped a book off at the local library. He said there has been incidents recently at the library, I quickly blurt in "Like what?" as I have not heard of any problems at the library and certianly would like to know about it, and he blatantly ignores my question and continues on saying that he just wanted to make sure I was not doing anything I should not be.
Naturally I remembered everything down to the book title and author of the book I just returned and he lets me go and I am on my way about 5 minutes later, I did nothing wrong and cooperated.
I don't mind police doing their necessary duties and maintaining the peace. I DO mind an officer nearly
I am on the road alot and almost every day I see Police not on emergency runs, speeding by the rest of traffic (which is already moving above the "speed limit").
Mike: It doesn't matter how good they are at driving. They can still make a mistake, or cause someone else to get in an accident.
They should only speed when they are responding to a call.
It is a fact the some, not all, disobey the speed limit to quite an extent. There is an easy and fair way to curtail this abuse.

This petition refers to when they are not responding to a call and they are speeding -- it happens all the time, but of course you will never believe it.
Your point that some departments don't allow use of emergency lights is exactly what I want to change.
Aren't police trained to drive fast and control their vehicle in all kinds of conditions. The average drivers are not and they are the ones that cause the accidents, right?
People must consider why police exceed the speed limit. In many cases, when responding to a crime in progress, emergency equipment would alert the criminal to the approaching police. Also, many police department policies and even state traffic laws exclude police vehicles from simple traffic laws such as speed limits when responding for calls for service, emergency or not. Also, some police department policies do not allow the use of emergency equipment unless they are specifically instructed to under certain circumstances. An officer may need to back up another officer on a traffic stop but the use of emergency equipment may not be justified. The first priority is officer safety, therefore the backup officer will respond as quickly as possible. It is not always what is seems on the surface. Don't be so quick to think that police just drive fast because they can get a way with it. Police are generally very busy and have little time to think about what they want to do. They are performing a service to the community, and sometimes that may require driving faster than everyone else.
Personally, I think cops could find a much better use for their time in this day and age than setting speed-traps for people who are trying to get back and forth to work. For the most part, it's nothng more than legalized HIGHWAY ROBBERY.
