This petition is in reference to the bill called H.R. 7089 Federal Prison Work Incentive Act of 2008. We are urging our congressman to support this bill that has been introduced by Representative Danny Davis of Illinois, it will be presented as bill H.R. 1475.

As you know, there are numerous problems with the prison system in the United States including overcrowding and the failure to rehabilitate our prisoners. An additional issue of primary concern in today’s climate is the economic drain that federal prisons are on the financial health of the country.

We support the need for a criminal justice system and for consequences for criminal behavior. However, we think it is time that we evaluate how this system is working and whether we have developed a system that is fair, restorative and rehabilitative or one that is wasteful of tax dollars, primarily punitive, and leads to a “revolving door” syndrome. After studying what is happening in our prison system, we believe it is time for reform.

We support Bill H.R. 7089 for several reasons:
1) It provides incentive and reward for prisoners for appropriate behavior and
hard work while incarcerated.
2) It allows for the early release of prisoners, many of whom are nonviolent first
offenders, who are ready to contribute positively to society and for whom additional time in prison would serve no useful purpose.
3) It would save tax payers an estimated $2 billion per year.

To our Congressman and Senators, we urge you to consider whether we as a country want to continue to pour money into an overcrowded, dysfunctional federal system or if we want to give deserving people a second chance to be contributing members of our communities.

H.R. 1475 is one bill that will help people get a chance to face their prison time with hope, a hope that they will have the opportunity to show through their good behavior and hard work in prison that they are ready to reenter society.

I strongly support this petition. Instead of wasting that much money on housing inmates. why dont you put together drug abbuse programs and programs and jobs that can help inmates when they are released. Being in jail does not teach them anything. 70% of inmates will return to jail sometime. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS BILL. it something that we NEED right now in this economy.

I support this petition.Because they could be using that money for something more important that paying for a federal inmate housing. And most that are in there,is in there for non-violent crimes.tax-invasion,fraud ,etc.we need to spend it on something more useful.build more after school programs for kids,so they can have somewhere safe to go.thank u,and god bless!
