We are the richest nation in the world, yet we don't properly take care of our poor and elderly!! We should be ashamed that there are those in our country who hold jobs yet cannot support their families and elderly people who cannot feed and house themselves.
Government is supposed to be of, by and for the people, not the corporations and the wealthy. We need to regain control of the system from the greedy and the powerful who would exploit us at every turn.
It is important for all Americans to read John Perkins' "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" to see how our country has interfered in other countries and is now doing to the everyday US citizen what was done to impoverish others around the world.
It is time to stop supporting other countries with foreign aid such as Saudi Arabia, etc., funding corporate welfare, tax relief for the wealthy and start investing those moneys into the working citizens of the United States!
The way this administration has torn up the FSLA, and walked over the rights of other members of labor, makes the Reagan Administration look like a picnic. I am a union member, active, though retired, but I fear for my brothers still in the field.
George W. Bush must also accept personal responsibility for the felony of disclosing the identity of an intelligence agent (Valerie Plame) on active duty. His continuing refusal to do so makes this America's worst -- and only -- act of TREASON COMMITTED BY THE PRESIDENT. Bush must be removed from office and put on trial for this crime.
There is a less than 2% defecit in the Social Security system which can easily be taken care of in many ways. The program is NOT in any imminent danger of collapse. All this social security reform chatter on the right is just an attempt at stratifying the social structure even more. A stab at deepening the divide between rich and poor so the elitist pigs can have more control over everybody and everything.
Henry Ford knew that the people who built the cars needed to earn enough to buy them. What happened to that insight? $13 an hour is poverty for a family of four so ten is a no brainer.
We need to remind those in Congress that are for privatization of Social Security that they work for us. Let's not forget this when we go to the polls.
This is a thinly veiled attempt by Republicans to do away with Social Security. If they really want to fix something, let's have a good, hard look at Medicare!!
For cryin' out loud, people CAN'T get by! Raise the minimum wage already! And LEAVE SOCIAL SECURITY ALONE!!! Simply enact a law to negate the salary cap and all will be fine for a long time! It ain't rocket science, ya' know?
What ever happened to "a government BY the people, and FOR the people?" The way our government is today , it is certainly NOT "FOR" the people. At least not the everyday people. And BY the people? When was the last time you actually felt like your vote made a difference?
Stop social security privatization now! If you don't want more homeless people than you can imagine and a large increase of crime rate, stop it now. If you don't want all those people and many more at the White House, stop it now.
And just how will this help seniors if the bottom falls out of the market? And how 'bout the 25% that have been so poor all their lives that the only thing they have to retire on is Social Security?
And just how can a family making less than 25,000 a year save a penny, especially since most of them have no medical care? Dumb plan, dumb selfish reasons and stupid to even consider doing away with Social Security. If the bonds in Social Security are no good, why not, and who spent the money?
Stocks are a rich man's game. Uneducated/ill informed and poor stand to loose the most, and a good stock market crash will leave to many people holding the bag.
Of course, we could never as a country support raising the salary cap. I mean why should the guy that rakes in millions have to pay his fair share so the guy that has next to nothing can survive old age.
Screw each other! All for me! That is what America is all about! Good luck.
im only 15, but i still feel like this concerns me because its our country's future.
all this talk about ss privatization is bull, and im willing to pay a higher tax in order to support the ss fund with more money.
why is this not being screamed about?
I have heard that this social security scheme is another Republican effort to win votes. It pits the younger against the older generations. We need young people to come out against this dangerous plan.
I am utterly opposed to privitization of social security. The president'scheme theatens to impoverish us all.
We also need a higher minimum wage. If members of Congress would not tolerate the present minimum wage for themselves why should we?
We are being lied to about the benefits of privitization as well as the brokenness of the Social Security system. i am appalled at the greed of big business and the lack of integrity of our government. God help us a nation!
We must keep our country strong. Everyone regardless of income must be able to have a substainable life with options to grow. Keep the government out of mine and others pockets.
When financial instability on a nation wide scale is a potential threat, effective SMART action must be taken. Fear and mistrust helf by the United State's population must be taken into consideration. Government must work for all the people, NOT the fat cats.
If the government would stop spending Social Security money on other programs, we would have no problems. The media never mentions that there is not enough money in the program because the government takes it out. It is our money and they should leave it where it belongs so it will be there when we need it.
let's face it - the REPUBLICANS are intentionally AIMING programs cuts towards group that traditionally VOTE DEMOCRAT, along with the most frail, "voiceless" populations.
THIS ALREADY IS A ONE PARTY COUNTRY.
Investing Social Security into the stockmarket is just a way for politicians to blame Wall St. & the individual when the money disappears. An old magician's trick.
The outcome of this campaign to change Social Security will determine whether Americans are really stupid enough to fall for it.
If the Iraq War was an indicator, they are.
If they don't, the war was hyped(by those who knew better) for the trusting masses.
Some citizens just can't learn.
NO REPUBLICAN LEFT BEHIND! EDUCATE EVERY ONE.
If I could sue the gov't for years of "borrowing" from SS and obviously not paying it back with interest it would have earned then I would!!! I'm sure Mr. Bush wants to do the only thing he can do, which is the "moral" thing. Pay the money back to SS that is owed it and all will be fine and the govt. can get back to business. Like catching the terrorists, securing our borders, rising unemployment, rising homelessness because more people are out of a job and losing their homes, the children in school no one wants to talk about that has been left behind. Hopefully we can settle this once and for all and do the "moral" thing.
Social security is as solvent as the USA. The federal governent is running in the red now!!! By 2045 or whatever date is used, who knows if it will be bad for social security to run just like the federal governent??
Quit stealing money from our grandparents and great-granchildren. Balance the budget and fight your war of choice on the backs of the corporate and wealthy that benefit from your hatred.
