I am going into complete detail so every aspect is covered. This petition is to be used to help seek prosecution of the individual, and/or individuals involved in the Hatchet Mauling of the American Pit Bull Terrier, Ugly, in Muskegon Michigan on April 2, 2007.

On April 2, 2007 at approximately 2:45 p.m. my American Pit Bull Terrier (Sir Ugly) got out of our yard by breaking a piece of our privacy fence. As soon as this was noticed, my Husband (Jon) got in our van to search for him. Jon got one block over, on Superior St. in Muskegon, Michigan, only to see 2 African American males (One older/One younger) with hatchets. As Ugly was walking by the older male, this man struck Ugly in the Muzzle with the hatchet. Jon jumped out of the van and yelled "UGLY" and Ug ran to the van at jumped in. Then the other male started toward Jon with the hatchet because Jon was screaming at the older male, and Jon said, You're going to Jail and came home.

At this point, I called 911, and they sent an Officer. Jon headed back over to make sure the males were not going to flee the scene, but they already had. When the police got here, we were basically told that nothing was going to come about because our dog was at large, and they have a "Dangerous Dog Law." All Pit Bulls and Pit mixes must be muzzled when being walked, they must be in an FULLY enclosed kennel on the INSIDE of our fence, and you must hold a $50,000.00 insurance policy on them if you own them. I DID NOT KNOW that if they were inside our fence that they needed to be ENCLOSED in a kennel also. I thought that was law for outside dogs.

I admit, Ugly got out, but he has NEVER tried to bite anyone, or even growled, EVER. He is nothing but a lover, and everyone that has ever come into contact with him LOVES HIM! With new people, he is their BEST FRIEND. The Officer said, the man who did this is going to say that the dog tried to attack him, and he defended himself. But, there are 3 HUGE FACTORS that can prove that to be false, and that Ugly was NOT trying to attack. 1.) The gash in Ugly's face is SIDEWAYS. If Ugly was trying to attack this man, they would have been face to face, which means, this gash, considering the downward swinging motion that took place, should be horizontal on Ugly's muzzle. 2.) How would these people just so happen to have a hatchets? If Ugly was headed to attack, he would have done it so quickly they would have NOT had time to grab ANY object. This is just common sense knowing the quickness of an American Pit Bull Terrier. 3.) JON SAW THIS HAPPEN!

Because of Ugly being loose, even though Jon was right on his tail after him, this man is looking at NO PUNISHMENT. Muskegon County is very harsh on "Pit Bull Breeds," but knowing Ugly is NOT an aggressive dog in ANY way, and also knowing the way the gash is placed on his face... THERE IS NO WAY THAT UGLY WAS TRYING TO BITE THE MAN THAT DID THIS. AFTER being hit in the face with a hatchet by a total stranger and having his muzzle bones broke, he walked into a vet's office that he had never been in, and never ONCE nipped, or tried to hurt any staff member. IN TOTAL PAIN without any med's, Ug was given a shot, his temp was taken, his head was held tightly, he was thoroughly handled by complete strangers, and he never even gave a growl. HIS TAIL WAS WAGGING!

Can anyone possibly say that Ugly deserved this? Can anyone say knowing the above, that Ugly was trying to attack this man? Can anyone say that this man struck him in the face with a hatchet because his life was in danger?

This man should face charges. UGLY is gentle, loving, people dog. Muskegon County is NOT going to do anything unless I push this... and I am prepared to do whatever it takes to make sure that NO ONE gets away with HURTING A DOG LIKE THIS, SIMPLY OUT OF FEAR! FEAR BASED ON PRESS, FEAR BASED ON "STORIES," AND FEAR BASED ON BREED PROFILE! Ugly did NOTHING to this man, and THIS MAN ATTACKED UGLY IN THE MOST DISTURBING WAY POSSIBLE! THAT IS TRYING TO KILL THE ANIMAL! Is this okay just because he is a Pit Bull?

Please support Ugly and his right to justice. UGLY IS THE VICTIM! PLEASE EXPRESS YOUR CONCERN. UGLY cannot speak. PLEASE, HELP ME, BE HIS VOICE!
