Regardless of how Puerto Rico became part of the United States, thousands of Puerto Ricans have shown dedicated patriotism by serving in the United States military. In fact, Puerto Rico has been the 6th largest contributor per capita compared to all states.

Over 62,000 Puerto Ricans served in WWII, over 43,000 in Korea, 48,000 in Vietnam, and over 1,800 are currently in Iraq. Their loss of life has been excessive (nearly 50 in Iraq to date) and in some wars has been twice that per capita of any state in the country.

However, even as American Citizens, Puerto Rican soldiers based in Puerto Rico are denied the basic democratic freedom of voting for their commander in chief. How can we ask them to die for us but turn them away at the polls?

As an American Citizen, I want all soldiers who risk their lives for my freedom to have the basic right of choosing their leader. Puerto Rican soldiers must be given the right to vote in federal elections under the authority of a designated state via absentee ballots. Their sacrifices should not be in vain.
