I am a great lover of all kinds of music but I've never been able to see what the big deal about punk is. It is a popular genre that many critics and fans claimed changed the face of music for the better.

I have nothing against lesser known garage bands creating simple, structured music. You don't have to be Jimi Hendrix to create good music. However, as far as my ears can tell, many punk bands don't even try composing music. They just play random notes. There are exceptions of course. More pop based punk such as the Ramones and the Clash created some catchy tunes. However, I fail to see how the Ramones are hold in such high regard when there are so many other bands more deserving of their status.

Many punk fans tell me that the music does indeed sucks and no one listens to punk for the music but for the lyrics. I've never found the lyrics to be that interesting either. Everyone has an opinion and instead of putting forth a creative arguement agianst it, many of the bands I've heard simply complain about the problem poorly. Crass, Dirt, New York Dolls, The Stooges, MC5. I've tried listening to them all.

I'm hoping that if someone can help me understand. I don't mean to come off as arrogant, but it probably hasn't helped that most punk fans I've met online are pretty arrogant towards other genres themselves.

Also, are the Velvent Underground, Rancid and Patti Smith punk? Thanks for clearing this up.

Punk is just another genre that focuses on the non conformist demographic. i don't see the big fukcing deal about 'real music' and all that crap. i like kelly clarkson just as much as i like my chemical romance. just remember that they all are in the business to make money. no one does anything for free. for the record, avril rules :p

All of you mother fuckers can go fuck yourselves! Yes it's true, the majority of punk music is simple and lacks what we would call a more "traditional" stucture but who gives a fuck! I think you're all forgetting that to write great music takes so much experience and knowledge and many young punks out there lack this. So laugh at their attempts to expressive themselves, we don't care anyway, that's what makes us punk in the first place. Just don't expect us to support you when your comformist world spirals into darkness forever!

Angry Fucker, I hear that arguement a lot but from what I've heard the stuff. If punk was good for killing Abba and Fleetwood Mac, why do punk fans always say how great it was that it killed bands such as Yes, Rush and Genesis? Punk is kind of an anti-elitist elitism for lack of a better term. Punk fans think that any music that seeks to be creative or complex is shit. Why does punk get so much credit yet prog is so hated?

Exactly, compare ANY punk band on MTV to something like Dream Theater (prog rock). Compare the complexity, the effort put into making it, the length and difficulty of the song, then state honestly, which is better.

punk sucks hairy donky balls. prog is a much more intellegent and entertaining form of music. For one thing people actually can play their instruments and have the mental capacity to make a song longer then 2 minutes. laurin you are a dumb fuck. dont even tell me the lyrics are better in punk. dont get me started.

Punk is popular because, at the time, rock and roll was dead, and disco fuckasses like Abba and Fleetwood Mac were clogging up the scene. Then punk exploded, and rock and roll revived. If you like New York punk, listen to Richard Hell and The Voidoids. Today's punk, however, sucks the dick.

Blink 182 are trying to market a dead image to conformity seeking teens. Punk has had it's time but now it is time for something new. The punk you see on MTV isn't real punk, it's pop influenced rock. Some call it pop-punk but it's not. The Ramones is pop-punk. Blink 182 is pop-rock. Come back here Stalin when a true punk fan has added a comment and we may both learn something. The Dead Kennedys (who I'm listening to now) suck at creating music and their lyrics aren't imaginitive, but they appear to be fighting for a cause. Jello Biafra is one of the few punks to have bite to his bark and has done what he can outside of his music to make a political difference instead of just complaining and not doing anything about it like most punk bands.
