Lestat, a musical written by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin and based on novels by Anne Rice played at the Palace Theatre on Broadway from March 25, 2006 to May 28, 2006. The cast recorded the album for Mercury Records at Sony's studios in New York on May 22, 2006. The cast was told to expect a July 11 release date. But, in early August, over two weeks after the supposed release date and following a number of inquiries to everyone from the musical's producer to Mercury Records, a statement was finally released at eltonjohn.com:

"We have received many messages asking when the Lestat cast album will be released. According to Elton's management, there are no plans to release the album at present."

Whether a show has a long run, or a short run, as long as it has a run, it is a part of Broadway history. Theatre is alive and it is remembered in the pieces that remain when the curtain falls for the last time - the photos, the playbills, the cast recordings, and the memories. Cast members worked long and hard on the stage, and in the recording studio, and if you too believe that this hard work should not be thrown by the wayside and forgotten, please join our campaign to have this cast recording be released.

About The Campaign

Lestat, a musical written by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin and based on novels by Anne Rice played at the Palace Theatre on Broadway from March 25, 2006 (first preview) to May 28, 2006 (closing performance).

The cast featured Hugh Panaro (Lestat), Carolee Carmello (Gabrielle), Roderick Hill (Nicholas), Drew Sarich (Armand), Jim Stanek (Louis), Michael Genet (Marius), Allison Fischer (Claudia), and a wonderful ensemble consisting of Will Swenson, Chris Peluso, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Rachel Coloff, Dominique Plaisant, Tommar Wilson, Nikki Renee Daniels, Joe Dellger, Patrick Mellen, Megan Reinking, Sarah Solie, Steve Wilson, and Sean MacLaughlin.

One of the most frequent questions I've received as the web-mistress of a site for Lestat lead Hugh Panaro is "When will the show's official Broadway cast album be released?"

Beginning during the previews, pre-orders for the cast recording were available at the merchandie kiosks in the Palace lobby. Later, it was also listed at soundofmusic.de where pre-orders were strong enough to make it their #2 best-seller, even without an actual release date.

The cast recorded the album for Mercury Records at Sony's studios in New York on May 22, 2006.

The cast was told to expect a July 11 release date. For almost two months, there was no more official news, not even for those of us who have pre-ordered the cd through the merchandise kiosk at the theatre or through the sole on-line retailer offering it.

Despite the show's too-short run, there is a healthy interest in this album... from people who saw and enjoyed the show, for people who had planned to see the show this summer, from fans of the cast or composer.

At Hugh-Panaro.net alone, search terms such as lestat cast recording release date account for at least 45% of the total search phrase used to reach HPN. The question of the release comes up often at Broadway message boards. Even the above official statement mentioned "many messages."

We believe that after all the hard work done on the part of the wonderful cast of this show, their efforts should not be forgotten and thrown by the wayside. They were deprived of a decent run of the show, and it seems unfair and even disrespectful to keep the cast recording, the remaining symbol of their passionate efforts in this show, from being released.

So, what can be done to get the Lestat cast recording released?

For starters, write to the people in charge. A letter carries more weight with a company than a phone call or an e-mail. Because a letter means you took the time to sit down and write, to find an envelope and stamp, to go and mail it. If you don't get a response in two to three weeks, do it again. Don't harass, but generate paperwork for them to deal with. Keep it polite and to the point. We're rightfully angry over this, not insane. Otherwise, they'll just dismiss us.

The first stage of this campaign is to write individual letters to the addresses listed here. If we don't get a response, the next step will be a mass mailing campaign.

If you would like to help the campaign or if you have additional ideas for voicing support for the Lestat cast recording, please let us now!

I support this petition. I am a huge fan of the novel, and have become a fan of the music, I think if this was re- directed in some way this could certainly be a hit!
